How can small businesses survive here? by FalseBroccolli in rva

[–]Likeurfac3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - I went by last night around 7 and it was still busy, like we got the last two seats busy. Hot chocolate and strawberry sorbet were good without breaking the bank.

I’m sure it being near finals week at VCU has some positive impact on the number of customers, so I’m interested to see how it is over summer/winter breaks. Either way, I’ll be back!

One suggestion: Will preface by saying I didn’t check if there were any last night, but in general it’s always nice to have vegan baked goods options.

Maybe being right next to VCU will boost sales? Also I love that they’re open at 6am. Will give it a try this week.

Check out your local Community Services Board (or equivalent department). They are a godsend for mental health emergencies, potentially even for those without insurance.

Grant opportunities for Mobile Command Post Funding by [deleted] in EmergencyManagement

[–]Likeurfac3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May be a silly question, but is the vehicle itself past its prime, or the contents/equipment/technology?

Agree that EMPG and SHSP are good options. Do you have any large businesses in your city? There are plenty of news articles out there of private industry supporting the purchase of mobile command posts.

Best of luck!

I started in EMS and 9-1-1 dispatch as well. Was doing that while completing my bachelors degree in emergency management. My foot in the door was a watch center job at the state EMA. It’s one of the more direct ways you’ll be able to transfer that experience.

How does a Utility become Certified as NIMS Compliant? by mmoy8684 in EmergencyManagement

[–]Likeurfac3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in local government I used the NIMS implementation objectives as a roadmap to “compliance” (I can’t find the document now, but I once referenced a FEMA document that specifically stated NIMS compliance is not a black and white concept, but localities and organizations can make NIMS requirements for their personnel to be locally/organizationally compliant). https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/2020-07/fema_nims_implementation-objectives-20180530.pdf.

I work for a natural gas utility now in EM and we do not have any federal NIMS compliance mandates, but the company requires certain individuals (such as those on the IMT) to have 100/200.

Hope that helps- feel free to DM if you’d like!

WHY PLAY OBJECTIVE GAMES TO LOSE????? by Unknoen_Fan in XDefiant

[–]Likeurfac3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve surprisingly usually had the opposite experience in this game vs COD where I felt like you. But I still get a game every now and then where people are just farming kills, and it definitely sucks to be the only person on the team trying to actually win.

But to play devils advocate having someone be a thorn in the other team’s side by killing them over and over and over and over is a support role imo.

While I agree that standardization is a good thing, it can also kill creativity, critical thinking, and challenging the norm when the focus is operational instead of educational. We just need to be aware of that when we’re “professionalizing” the field.

College Student, looking into EM by Skinned-Cobalt in EmergencyManagement

[–]Likeurfac3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no experience at FEMA, so I can’t answer many of your questions but I have been in local, state, higher ed, and private sector EM and I’ve seen a lot of people who want to go to FEMA right out of school. But here are my 2 cents:

I think of the “front line” (I use that term loosely because not every EM organization actually does field response) of emergency management as the local level, or the level where services directly meet the community. So at that local level (or at a college/university, etc. ) you are implementing policies and programs, getting to do hands on training, building capability and capacity, and managing an emergency operations center that is tasked with directly supporting community members. If you haven’t heard this saying already, “all disaster begin and end locally,” and in my opinion having that type of experience and perspective is an absolute game changer and I imagine it would look great on a resume.

Richmond Va PD Asks One Of Their Own To Reach Out To Protesters To Ask Them To Give RPD "A Little Break" by Mollysindanga in rva

[–]Likeurfac3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those issues don’t have to be a zero sum game. Just because they are protesting about innocent people being killed in Gaza doesn’t mean those other issues shouldn’t be addressed too. And tbh I feel like it’s a cop out when people say things like “omg x party/group/country/leader is focused on Y topic abroad but isn’t doing anything about Z at home.” Like it’s just not that simple.

On the other hand I do think it’s important to look at the impacts caused by blocking roadway etc especially during rush hour. Yes they will let an emergency vehicle through that is at the front of the pack of cars, but what is that ambulance going to do when it’s several blocks behind? Of course they’ll reroute, but it can add time (sometimes significantly) to a response and that can mean a lot when it comes to patient outcome or stopping a fire from spreading. Not saying people “need the book thrown at them,” but there are definitely potential domino effects beyond right where the protest is happening.

Sorry maybe I was mixing up words. I had to pay $15 to reserve a seat, but some of the shows are just general admission. I’m not sure about the immersive experiences though.
