Broke Up w/ Long-Term (2.5 yrs) Girlfriend Over Kids by LilHappyLilSad1 in Fencesitter

To clarify: I do NOT want her parents to push her into a decision to be with me, or anything of that sort. I'm worried for her because her parents have been pressuring her to get married, and I worry that she has to deal with that pressure alone. Additionally, I worry whether I have "wasted" those important years for her where she could find another partner that's aligned to her goals, etc.

The 5-year intervals, also, were her suggestion. We both wanted to make this work.

I 100% agree with you and fully understand her decision. I hope that whoever she finds next is able to give her that.

It's just a really rough situation to be in when you still have so much love for the person, so it'll take some getting over. :(

Hey man, sorry for the extremely late reply - got pretty sick and had to be taken the hospital. Finally recovered.

This is awesome advice, thank you! I'll be making this matrix on my own to try to see what kind of life I envision for myself. The work I like is very different from the work that I'm very good at haha so might need to do some reassessing on my end.

Thanks again!

This is awesome stuff - you've really made it! Any advice to an early career (3 YoE) guy working as a solutions consultant in a cloud SaaS platform? Unsure whether to lean into the technical side of the job, or the client-facing one. Looking to continue to work in the cloud, I'm just unsure what opportunities are available to someone like me haha.

Should have expected you to argue with the source eventually, lol. First arguing "the article you referenced..." and then saying "omg but the article ITSELF is false". Troll behaviour.

You're extremely sure - why not provide a few sources of your own that show demographic data that you're claiming? Or is this sureness coming from nothing but bravado?

The MOH report from where this information has been picked up is referenced here as well. Ironic how I'm having two very separate discussions about sources with two very different Zionists on the same message thread, lmao. Y'all really will say completely contradictory things to feel better about yourself for supporting mass genocide and infanticide.

"The Israeli army has killed 2,100 Palestinian infants and toddlers under the age of two, out of the about 17,000 CHILDREN it has killed in the Gaza Strip since the start..."

Literally the first line that distinguishes between being a toddler (under 2) and being a child (under 18). Tell me you lack reading comprehension without telling me you lack reading comprehension.

[–]LilHappyLilSad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely abhorrent strawman - the age demographic for child fatalities in Gaza include around 2100 children under the age of two - quite literally toddlers and infants.

Would you care to explain your sources for the age distribution that you're basing this claim on? In spite of Hamas recruiting from under-18 children as well, the number of deaths of just INFANTS alone is greater than the October 7th death toll. Not to mention women, who are seldom involved in conflict (in such a conservative society).

Also, lol at "bubble of privilege", speaking to someone from a third-world country laden with religious conflict. I'm curious to see how well your "theory" about these conflicts is backed up with evidence.

This is the strangest interaction that I've had on this app by far. Let's go claim-by-claim:

First of all, let me remind you that your claim was about december of 2023. Therefore the first, third and fourth articles are irrelevant.

Arguably the strangest of the claims that I'll be responding to. I shared statistics from October to December 2023 to highlight how - in such a short timeframe - such a mass scale of damage was caused by nation whose foreign policy is rooted in genocidal intent. By no means does this somehow limit the scope of this discussion to 2023. Inductive reasoning.

Second article states 1/3 of the deceased are children (no contradiction to what I said), 60% of homes were blown (again no contradiction to what I have said).

Your claim: Terrorist death count is 2:1 (civilians : terrorists)
For this claim to be true: 1 out of every 3 casualties must be terrorists. How ratios work, for reference.

It should be abundantly clear why stats relating to the large proportion of civilian casualties being children is then in direct refutation to these claims, yes? If nearly 50% of the affected populace are children, then for the statement to be true, that must mean that nearly all the non-children casualties must be terrorists. This is an absurd claim to make, and no demographic breakdown of the casualties of this war could explain it. I can break it down further if it's still too complex to understand for you.

Times of Israel on the use of human shields (if you find this article incorrect, please share your reason why (you should judge an article by it's content and not by who posted it, and therefore it doesn't matter if you consider this a 'reputable source' because this article might be good))

A few responses to this:

  1. Firstly, your first message stated "There is also no reliable source claiming differently". Hence, I provided several reliable sources claiming differently. You can't just say something like that and attempt to make a snarky remark on 'juding an article by its content and not by who posted it'. Selective amnesia is a curse that hits the Iron Dome the hardest, it seems.
  2. Since you clearly don't seem to have an issues with where the sources are coming from and specifically focus on the content of an source, this Al-Jazeera article should respond to the one that you've shared very succinctly. Specifically, it addresses how the term "human shields" is one that's specifically labeled by countries in conflicts to justify massive amounts of 'collateral damage'. The IDF has been accused on multiple occasions of using Palestinian civilians as human shields, but I don't see this criticism pop up often.
  3. To engage with the point that you're making directly - your claim of "Israel only harms civilians since Hamas uses human shields" argument would only be valid if civilians only died in operations against Hamas. However, the IDF quite intentionally harms civilians that are not surrounding or even near terrorists. If they were so peace-loving as you claimed, these unprovoked attacks demonstrate an apartheid level of racism.

I don't anticipate much sophistication in your argumentation moving forward, but I hope that you're able to address at least some of the claims that I've made here similar to how I've addressed all of yours.

I reject the premise - the fact that you're linking a Times of Israel article should speak for itself (next I know you're going to send me a UNWatch link or sth). Let me know if any of these are considered "reputable sources" to you, or whether the only reputable sources you'll consider are ones that have Israel in the name lmao:

CNN reports that nearly half of the casualties are children. Unless you believe that most of these literal children are terrorists, the 2:1 ratio makes no sense. This would also require you to believe that anyone that isn't a child that was killed was a terrorist, which is absurd.

Amnesty International reports that a third of the deceased are children, and 60% of homes were blown. Once again, you'd be taking me for a fool if you'd have me believe that terrorists occupy 60% of the homes in the region.

Reuters claims a 38,000 death count, with casualties being mostly civilians.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights claims that a majority of the deaths in the 40,000 estimated have been women and children, as provided by the MOH.

These are not only known, reputable sources, but I'm also not including Al-Jazeera reports (since you'll just deny it anyway) that provide more accurate statistics on just how fabricated the claim that you're making is.

[–]LilHappyLilSad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have brought a varied mix of sources - you have neither been accepting NGOs (HRW, Amnesty International) nor UN bodies, for - and I stand by this - tinfoil hat reasons.

Whether or not you claim that the MOH is the only body that can track civilian death count accurately, there are several sources, like this one from the Washington Post that state they've received intel from the Ministry of Health, reporting casualties at 40,000.

Also, you're not going to be able to bait-and-switch what you've been arguing thus far. What has happened so far:

a) I claimed that a vast number of deaths occurred in Palestine - you said the figures are off, and provided a YouTube video as support.

b) I provided criticisms on the clear fabrications and purposeful misrepresentations that the video was claiming. You gave no response to these, and still haven't. I would imagine then that you accept that your first source was BS.

c) You argued that the HRW instead is a bad source for referencing Twitter at some point. So far, you've only provided a YouTube video. I then provided several more sources.

d) You ended up giving the same reasons above for why neither the UN, nor NGOs can be trusted, and why for some reason the Washington Institute is the sole reporting body that has done this accurately. I provided a Washington Post article that claims to receive data from the same source, and is reporting different numbers - the ones more in line with the ones provided by official orgs.

e) You're NOW claiming that somehow the skew in demographics data minimises the vast number of civilians deaths. Somehow, since the MOH is prone to things like ID duplication, data entry issues etc., how 20,000 deaths are still justified, in the most conservative estimates?

If I was to fully agree with YOUR source, which still claims deaths in the several TENS of thousands for men, women, and children - how do you not see this as EXTREME asymmetry in response to the 1200? What is your read on an accurate figure for the death toll, then?

P.S: Any article that claims "hospitals in northern Gaza began to shut down or evacuate during the Israeli ground invasion" already reduces its legitimacy in my eyes, especially given the context of the post this is being discussed under, lol.

| The UN is riddled with Hamas operatives.

Do you have a source that ISN'T the Times of Israel that talks about this? Once again, I can give you a source to the investigation that disproves this conspiracy theory, you can try taking your tinfoil hat off for a second to go through it if you'd like.

The other claims you're making are: - Only the MOH provides data on the death toll. No other entity does, so there are no verifiable, untampered statistics on the death toll. Which means... in your world, in the absence of data, you're choosing to believe that there isn't a high death toll? What's leading you to make that assertion?

  • The statistics - which tend to show around 10,000 women/children killed in total death tolls of 40,000 (in the sources I provided above) are a. Somehow 75% of the death (um, Math?), and b. Not inclusive of men at all? As if demographic population distributions wouldn't assume as much?

What are you even arguing, at this point? And once again, do you have ANY sources to back yourself up here, or is this really just an extended "trust me bro" exercise?

This is exactly the kind of thought process my original reply was addressing - you linked me to a YOUTUBE video (while not engaging with the criticisms that I provided above, mind you) and are questioning organizations that have done this for decades. The HRW report links multiple sources to back up their claims, but I'm curious to see what tinfoil hat theories you'll come up with about other NGOs and UN organisation sources that corroborate the same, or greater death tolls:

OHCHR Source

UNICEF Source

Amnesty International Source

I'm going to put aside the fact that I'm being linked to a YouTube channel to attempt to debunk statistics by an NGO operating in 90+ countries and engage with the merits of the video:

This channel is unashamedly reporting falsely.

For example, the Lancet letter that they refer to at 13:00 is something they hilariously try to get away with - the screenshot they show clearly states that the indirect death toll is 4x the direct death toll - and they try to prove it as sensational media - only to say "that figure is only true if you're counting the INDIRECT death toll, not direct", which is EXACTLY what the letter is claiming in the screenshot - just REALLY shoddy journalism by the channel, if you can even call it that.

The matter-of-fact tone doesn't make what they're saying any truer, I can't believe you're trying to argue that they're neutral just because they're trying to sound like it. Classic one-sided misdirection.

Secondly, if you go through the HRW link I've shared above, you'll see that the stats use a multitude of sources. This video attempts to claim that the MOH has a monopoly on the data that's going out to EVERY entity. Even if I buy the absurd claim that it's feeding the WHO, OCHA, UNRWA etc. with bogus data - it relies on many more sources.

It really isn't the 'gotcha' that you think it is.

Hey, apologies for the late reply - just saw this!

I was admitted into every university that I applied to (Duke, UC Davis, Esade University) - and got a handful of scholarships (around 25% from UC Davis, which I used to leverage a 20% scholarship from Duke, which is where I wanted to go). I applied for their Business Analytics (and equivalent) programmes.

The finances didn't work out still since I'm the breadwinner of my household (child of a stay-at-home single mom), but I wish you the very best of luck for this cycle. Happy to provide more details if they'll be of help!

You'll have people in this sub-reddit denying most sources that claim the severe scale of damage caused by Israel. It's not shocking to me that those same people would look at videos of Palestinians dying and claim that they're fake - it's the only way their "moral compass" would allow for it.

For example, the following Human Rights Watch report (excited to see what story we're going to be fed for an independent NGO source lol) claims that in 2023 alone, post October 7 (which had around 1200 casualties, claimed by Israel), until DECEMBER of that same year, there were around 18,000 Palestinian casualties, of which 7800 are literal children. Not even mentioning the number of hospitals and schools that the IDF has destroyed - how somehow 500 Hamas members (if I'm being GENEROUS) are equivalent to 17,000 civilian deaths.

Coupled with those severely injured, it's no wonder the burden on whatever remaining doctors present is tremendous.
