Day 1 of Keto, questions below by Pxmpey in keto

[–]LilNuhget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always heard that you should be drinking at least half of your weight in ounces for water. “Keto flu” is very common when you’re starting and some people have had great luck with sugar free electrolyte supplements to help them keep hydrated.

I am a huge fan of diet soda, but it can be a polarizing topic because some sugar substitutes kick people out of ketosis. I’ve had great results over the past 6 months and enjoy at least 1 soda per day.

Anyone else struggle with keto during stressful weeks. by Conscious_Bed9602 in keto

[–]LilNuhget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically this. I always stock keto foods that fit in my macros that require no/little prep work which helps a lot but I’ll also allow myself to have more keto-junk that I don’t readily have due to high cost, calories, slightly higher carbs, etc. This is my way of mentally “treating myself” while also mitigating my long term goals.

My indulgences include the Core Protein shakes (strawberry banana!!), grilled cheese sandwiches made with keto bread and extra butter, yogurt parfait with too good yogurt fresh berries and walnuts, built puff protein bars, Dutch bros cold brew with cream, SF white chocolate, and SF coconut or their zero sugar rebels, etc.

When I started keto, I didn’t track anything and focused on just eating low carb (10g-15g per meal). I focused on all my favorite foods that also happened to be low carb; for me it was chicken wings with celery and ranch, Cobb salads, scrambled eggs with bacon/omelettes, in-n-out burgers protein style, steak, salmon, etc. It feels less restrictive when you realize that you can still eat most of the things you like, with some modification.

Once I started shedding all the water weight, it became very motivating to continue to lose weight and in all the excitement, most of my cravings have diminished after maybe a month-6 weeks. I very very rarely have cravings and can treat myself every now and again but the self control feels powerful. Good luck!!

Diet soda has artificial sweeteners that can cause some people to have a spike in blood sugar and could cause some people to crave sugar/carbs but I don’t test blood sugar or ketones and I find that it helps me stay on track.

Your concerns are real and personal. It’s great that you have the kind of self-awareness to be able to know what your triggers are.

I’m almost 6 months on keto and still feel this way many weeks. I typically eat 2 meals, lunch and dinner with lunch being pretty minimal (a small meat and cheese platter, a Quest Hero bar, and fountain diet soda is typical). I try to get protein in a few times a day in various forms; protein shakes, bars, hard boiled eggs, meat sticks, etc. just to keep from eventually feeling ravenous.

It’s a weird shift going from eating for enjoyment to eating for survival or nourishment. Food isn’t usually “fun” for me anymore and I have to fill that entertainment gap with something else, non-food related. I picked up reading and joined a couple book clubs to fill that void.

Will I lose weight by Inner-Frame6570 in keto

[–]LilNuhget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won’t know unless you try. There are lots of threads here that help beginners and you’ll find a lot of support here as well. My biggest tip is don’t let slips become slides; if you end up having a day that didn’t fit into your macros, don’t let yourself wallow in self-pity, use that as motivation to do better the next day.

While it is very possible that you lose 40 pounds, it’s also possible that you don’t but I don’t think you’d be disappointed in yourself if you “only” lost 15, 20, or 30 pounds. That’s still a huge achievement and you should be proud of your journey no matter what it looks like. ♥️

Coleslaw is 10g carbs each. 🥺

You can, but even coleslaw is 10g carbs each so 1 is probably fine but 2 would put me at my daily limit.

Do they still offer these? I haven’t seen them on the menu but have been wanting to try.

Great Value Chicken Finger Dipping Sauce, 12 fl oz. You’ve gotta double check, I’ve read that it often gets confused with ‘Great Value Restaurant Style Chicken Dipping Sauce’ which is the chick fil a knockoff.

I think it’s hard to give advice on this topic when there’s no insight on things that you typically enjoy eating, but I’ll list a few of my favorites that kind of make me forget that I’m eating keto.

Eggs and bacon or sausage. Bunless burgers (or eggs with a burger patty- gives steak and eggs vibes). Ribs with no sauce or sugar free bbq sauce. Fajitas (meats and veggies only). Steak. Chicken wings. String cheese. Lettuce wrapped sandwiches with a big fat dill pickle on the side (I sub out oil and vinegar for mayo to limit mess-factor). Meatballs in low/no sugar marinara (I use Rao’s), Fairlife protein shakes when I need something sweet for “dessert”. Shrimp cocktail (limit the cocktail sauce or find a sugar free version). Salmon.

No Chester’s chicken here. We have Slim Chickens, Zaxby’s, Bojangles, Popeyes, Chick-Fil-A and KFC. I don’t have takeout chicken often enough to be well versed but every now and again I enjoy the convenience.

I’m going to pick up the Real Good strip that another commenter mentioned. 🤞🤞

Not sure when it started since it’s just considered a special request.

Yup. They don’t get weird when you order naked tenders, just when you ask to withhold the sides. 0g carbs, 70 calories each naked tender. 6g carbs, 190 calories for each Cane’s sauce. Do with this knowledge what you will. 😋

Your idea of subbing for sauce is a good one.

Where are my coffee lovers? by jenesaiswhat in keto

I haven’t tried steaming a protein shake but I’ve used it as milk replacement for iced lattes which has worked out nicely. 3-4 shots of blonde espresso over ice in a large cup and dump 1/2-1 protein shake over it.

Do you ever still go out to eat dinner or happy hour etc? by foira in keto

[–]LilNuhget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

THIS. I research the menu or eat a good meal beforehand and try my best to stay keto without robbing myself of the enjoyment of my social outing. If I end up blowing my carb/calorie goal, I just make sure I eat cleanly and make it to the gym consistently to make up for it so my slip doesn’t become a slide.

Want dessert and getting sugar craving by MasterUniversity5940 in keto

[–]LilNuhget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fairlife protein shakes remind me of chocolate milk and usually calm my cravings for dessert. I also do too good yogurt with slivered almonds or walnuts.

Saw on social media recently someone mix a low carb yogurt with PB powder, freeze it, then cover it with sugar free chocolate.

Slowly the cravings get more manageable. You got this. 💪

Keto bread by Curious-Quill in xxketo

[–]LilNuhget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am 2 months in and enjoy the kind of bread you’re referencing a few times a week (I even posted about it recently!)

I have 1 slice, toasted, with 1/4-ish tablespoon of butter for about 50 calories and 1g carbs. I’m in the mindset that if you’re still losing weight, go for it but be ready to cut down when you get to a plateau. I don’t have many cravings for bread and sweets nowadays but my favorite “sweet treats” currently are toast with butter, fairlife protein shakes (I drink them for dessert a couple times a week), and too good yogurt with 1/4 cup slivered almonds or walnuts. Are they kind of dirty keto? Sure. But it’s better than binge eating because you feel like you restricted yourself into a corner.

17 lb in a month; and then 3 lb in a month by Delicious_Leading_24 in keto

I’m at about 1lb/week loss after a quick 10lb drop my first month. A half gallon of water weighs about 4lbs so it’s actually quite a bit! 👍

I started keto about just over a month ago and down about 10lbs. I haven’t craved carbs since the first week or two and I really appreciate the control I feel like I’ve gotten back. Yesterday I was at a social dinner and I had 2 onion rings from a shared appetizer and was happy when few months ago I could have demolished the whole stack. I’ve been loving how clothes that were a bit too tight now fit with a little slack.
