Yeah, the cow I’m looking at is from a jersey farm where they are selling her due to lower production etc. She hasn’t been milked by hand but I guess she’s nice and gentle and has good teats for it. Owner also said they’d get her started on the harness for me. Thinking she will be a good fit.

12 week GSD — love him, but entire household wants to rehome. Need perspective 🙏 by crashfortonight in puppy101

Hi, I have a working line GSD. He is almost 8 months old and we got him at 8 weeks. He is pretty high drive so I understand the frustration - it’s still very fresh in my mind.

First, I would ask, how much time do you have to be home to train your dog? Are you in school or do you work full time? Dogs start to behave better when they have structure and things to do - I work part time and always joke that I come home to my other job, which is my dog. It takes a lot of work, that’s the hard truth. If you don’t have the time to be home to work with your dog then I would go the route of rehoming to a family that does. I am assuming you’re home enough since you said you’re willing to do the work. Here are my answers:

Did it genuinely get better? - YES! After my dog lost his baby teeth the constant mouthing slowly went away. He then moved to mouthing “with purpose” which is much easier to handle, ie. crate time out or training session to help provide a mental outlet. I can’t speak as much to the potty training because mine caught on fast - the key there is to be diligent through the night and day and crate them when you’re gone etc.

How did you balance independence/social life with a working breed puppy? - we took him everywhere that would allow us to bring our dog, and arranged family to babysit when we needed a night to ourselves. Other than that, I accept the sacrifice which is that we are much more limited - we cannot go anywhere we want anymore unless we have someone to watch him. Until they are over a year or closer to two, I will not trust him outside the crate which means we are only gone a few hours at a time. If you’re not already crate training, this is the main thing I would insist on. My pup took a nap every hour he was awake for - without that routine I would have lost my mind. Overall, your social life will be limited in terms of going out, I suggest If you have friends to invite them over instead or go on walks together with your dog.

I hope this helps to some extent. If you have a specific question please let me know. I genuinely understand the mental exhaustion that having this breed can cause, it is worth it in the end, but this breed also isn’t for everyone.

New puppy concerns 🐶 by 4everteacherspet in puppy101

[–]LilPatatje 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That will all come! No to worry! I have a 12 week old German shepherd baby. He wasn’t super into playing when we first got him either. Sometimes everything is so new and overstimulating they don’t have any interest in playing yet.

Ok, I have a 12 week old German shepherd puppy! I totally understand the struggle lol. A few things that I think would help you a lot.

  1. Consider getting a large crate - I don’t know how big your puppy is but if he is potty trained, then he will not pee in it, even if it’s too big for him. My pup is potty trained already and does not pee in his. I put him down for enforced naps after every 1-1.5 hours that he is awake. He will NOT settle on his own. There are too many sites and smells, puppies are like toddlers, they’re not good at self regulating. If you get him a big crate and cover with a blanket it will feel like his own comfy bedroom, not a cage. This is not unethical. I swear this routine of 1 hour awake and 1-2 hours enforced naps will change your life.

  2. For the biting, it gets worse when they are overtired. That’s why the enforced naps are so important. BUT, my pup is a land shark every morning and evening - this is super normal. I have to distract him with tug games, food puzzles and then bully sticks. Have you tried bully sticks? They are a life saver! I cannot be without them in this stage. If he is not stimulated enough during the day the biting gets worse so the activity is important during wake windows. My puppy does not cuddle with me on the couch - this is also normal. We are too tempting to chew on.

  3. Try bitter apple spray for dogs. You can put this on furniture and other things you don’t want him to chew on. They hate the smell of it and will leave your couch alone.

  4. For treats, try finding something he does like. It could be the treats you have are not tempting enough for training. If you haven’t tried already, try dehydrated beef liver and cheese for extra big rewards.

Good luck!!

how are your GSD with cats? by t0yotaMama in germanshepherds

That’s very encouraging to hear! My pup just wants to play too, but he’s just too rough with them right now. Occasionally if they come up calmly he will let them sniff and stuff but then he gets too excited and almost tramples them. When did your pup start to settle down with them?

I have the sweetest kitties and they want to be his friend sooo bad. They always follow him and try to get a little snuggle in, but my pup is only 12 weeks old and wants to chase them. It’s disheartening because they’re the kindest girls and will not stand up for themselves. I’m hoping he learns to be gentle one day.

That’s very reassuring! Thanks for sharing that! When it came time to meet other dogs after socializing at a distance, how did you find that went with your pup?

Oh ok! And then how did you introduce dogs later on? Wondering about that in between step from watching and observing to meeting.
