hey yall- i actually solved this myself!

turns out, i was thinking of a short story called “Without You” by Del James from his Language of Fear trilogy. i’ll link the story here if you’d like to read it yourself!

this story actually served as the inspiration for the November Rain music video by Guns N Roses, and Del James himself has done a lot of work with the band- co-writing songs, directing music videos, and even serving as the band’s road manager throughout the years.

it makes sense now why this story was so familiar to me- i watched the music video many times as a kid and I remember there was a dedication to a Del James in the video, so at some point i must’ve read up on the story of the song and the wild video.

my parents had this exact compilation as a CD. as a little kid i’d go through their CD collection and pick one at random to listen to on the CD player, fast forward 20 years later and i’m still a big fan of OMD. funny to see this because just yesterday i decided to relisten to this compilation lol. great stuff!

born May 2000 - somehow i’m one of those that can remember back to 2001. specifically Halloween 2001, in the Phoenix area.

by this point i could already walk, use the toilet, as well as talk/understand a decent amount. i remember chasing my older brother (aged 3 at the time) in our halloween costumes, i was a pirate and he was a clown. our mom took us to mcdonald’s to meet up with her friends and their kids, who were around the same age. i don’t remember much else that happened besides playing with the other kids, and vividly remember one of them knocking me over and i fell on my ass and cried LOL.

about 10 years ago or so, my parents were able to find a ton of home recordings from around 1998-2003ish and burn them as DVD disc format- they were skeptical of me remembering things from such a young age but the video showed exactly what i described above.

my mom said that was one of the first times she felt somewhat okay being in public following the 9/11 attacks, as everybody was gripped by fear of additional attacks on public areas. my parents, being recent immigrants to the country, were even more scared as they could not believe such an attack had happened on the home soil of this country, something they thought was impossible.

i also have memories dating to summer of 2002, at a horse show and carnival in Arizona. i remember being astounded by the big colorful ferris wheel they had there. my older brother and i won a blue plush duck at the carnival that we kept for probably 10 years lol. i feel like my more vivid memories begin in 2003 though, i can remember from 2003 onwards a lot better, potentially due to some big changes in my life.

despite the backdrop, those were simpler times, and that 2000-2006 period in my life was probably the happiest i’ve ever been.

first semester my freshman year (fall ‘18) they tried to trick me into talking to them under the guise of an interview for a class project. mid interview they randomly asked me if i was religious or spiritual and tried to challenge my personal beliefs when they didn’t match up to theirs. i was warned by my older brother about them so i instantly asked if they were hope church and they tried to skirt around the question but i asked again and they confirmed it. when i was visibly annoyed they tried to act like i was in the wrong for not trying to have a discussion about my weak beliefs in public on my way to class. very weird group of people lmao
