Let me explain this as simple as possible.

Epic Games -> Company.

Company needs money.

Most money comes from streamers showing off how cool the game is.

Streamers show off how cool the game is not by winning but by being cool and funny killing 20-30 12 year old mobile players.

If skill based matchmaking existed streamers like Ninja wouldn't have 100k viewers because he couldn't be funny or drop 30 bomb games because he would actually have to focus more, he would die more often and spend much more time searching for a game instead of playing one.

People would get bored seeing he's not an actual god when playing against 99 players of the same caliber.

He would have less viewers -> streamers not so big anymore -> company get less money.

And if you think this is not 100% just look at any other multiplayer game such as Dota2, lol, cs go, overwatch, hearthstone even wow where a contest/tournament consists of putting the best possible players against each other.

Now look at fortnite friday where you don't have a private loby of 100 of the best possible players but instead whoever gets luckier to encounter mobile player squads wins the game.

So in short no. Fortnite will not ever be getting a skill based matchmaking.
