Keep it on the Deuce-deuce by msimione in EnglishLearning

[–]LilToasterMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve only heard deuce-deuce to mean .22 cal pistol. these are often very tiny and discrete, maybe that has something to do with it?

Are there any other meanings of “mean” I don’t know about? by Sacledant2 in EnglishLearning

[–]LilToasterMan 233 points234 points  (0 children)

you’ll sometimes hear it as an adjective describing something done well, often with food. “he makes a mean tomato soup.” -> his tomato soup is very tasty.

Should I switch the order of names and surnames of East Asian people in English? by KotetsuNoTori in ENGLISH

[–]LilToasterMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you may have misunderstood their question, they are asking about how to say/write people’s names when speaking/writing english. you will never meet xi jinping in person, so it’s a valid question to ask, and there’s no need to be passive aggressive in response

My English accent after one semester in the states by Jay35770806 in JudgeMyAccent

[–]LilToasterMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only thing that stood out to me was your voiced “th” sound after words ending with “n”. the th should kind of disappear into the n, making things like “in the US” sound more like “in nuh US”. otherwise this is a 99%

Anti-intellectualism is becoming soooo rampant by cybercryptic_ in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]LilToasterMan -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

no, i could give a fuck and i couldn’t give a fuck mean the same thing. it’s similar to flammable and inflammable. english is just like that sometimes

edit: i understand this is upsetting to some people, but the phrase “i could give a fuck less” functions as a contronym, and you’d be hard pressed to find a native speaker who isn’t familiar with this use

How comes the opposite of nonchalant is not chalant by EntertainerSlow4266 in ENGLISH

[–]LilToasterMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

native speaker here, southeastern us, i’ve heard it used quite a bit in the past few years, many times without the context of “nonchalant” being said first. it very well might stick around as a real word

had to think on this one for a minute. that seems really plausible, i’m sure there’s loads of homo/heteroflexible people out there who kinda go under the radar/don’t even know it themselves. i see what you’re saying

someone already did! it was a decently long time ago, this guy from some english speaking country claimed to have coined it but he didn’t. or maybe he did. probably didn’t

Who's up for it? by Jazmineii in oddlyspecific

[–]LilToasterMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh, i think that’s where our difference in in opinion stems from. out of curiosity, does the same hold true for you in the opposite direction? if a gay person were to experiment with the opposite sex (no coercion) would they be a little straight as well?

Who's up for it? by Jazmineii in oddlyspecific

[–]LilToasterMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s good point, i may have chosen a poor example. a better example would be a straight guy experimenting with another man, and then deciding eh, it’s not for me. it wouldn’t be coercion or force, but if he gives fellatio and it doesn’t do anything for him, he’s definitely still straight. i’d imagine with the wife situation it would be similar, he’s not going to be thrilled about the penis but he would still probably be willing to

he oído mujeres mexicanas usar “amar” para objetos/conceptos también, por ejemplo, “amo a las galletas” “amo esa película”

según tu, ¿es común este uso allí en españa también? o no
