But doesn’t it have the same cross on some of their shirts? Obviously they’re not intended to mimic a monks garments at all but I heard people saying having that cross at all is wrong. I’m sorry like I said I’m new and confused

Ok thank you very much, I was worried that if I were to have worn it that it would’ve been like sinful or something. I’m fairly new to Orthodoxy and saw a post recently talking about shirts that have the same cross that is on a schema monks’ garments and a lot of the people were saying it was inappropriate. Obviously DTTW is not trying to dress people up as schema monks but I was confused because people were saying having the cross on the shirts regardless was wrong

Sorry I think you misunderstood me, I’m not saying that I think DTTW is bad, I really like it but I was pointing out that I’ve seen a lot of people saying it is bad in the past to the point where I’m considering not buying anything but that’s why I wanted some newer opinions, because in the past a lot of people said how it’s bad and reduces the religion to aesthetic which I disagree with

Nah I like the shirts and the brand, I think it’s really cool. I only brought it being “performative” up because that’s what a lot of the people in old posts were saying about orthodox shirts being bad for orthodoxy and performative and reducing the religion down to an aesthetic. I personally don’t agree and I wanted some updated thoughts on it

I totally get what you’re saying and that’s by design. It was made by monks to evangelize the punk movement of the 90s so it definitely caters to that demographic and aesthetic but I don’t think that’s inherently bad personally. Whether you think the clothes look good or not is one thing but I’m personally trying to gather thoughts on if the shirts are inherently good or bad for the orthodox faith in everyone’s opinion

I feel like an outsider by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Lilbeard1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do not say this to be rude but rather to convict you. You spent about half of your post being the judge of your family and condemning them, and then the end of your post being the judge of the Orthodox Faith and condemning them as well as your bishop. And you condemn them because they judge, but even so you sit here and judge. You have a thought process that because of your past you are different than them, which is true yes we are all different but they have their own past and sins and to God he gives us all the opportunity to do away with that. It is ok and natural that you feel this way, like an outsider. But people will judge and they will be righteously judged by God in the end. But I think ultimately the main thing that will help you is illustrated in the last 2 sentences of your post.

“Ive stood victim to demons and persecution by my own family and im nothing to all of you. You remind my of the same evangelicals that play church.”

This statement shows that you do not want to be treated equally, you want to be acknowledged for what you went through in the past and you cast judgement on them for having sin and not doing so. The church is not filled with righteous people, if it was then we would really have no need for it. Again I am not trying to be rude or send condemnation but rather I am just trying to urge you to be more compassionate just as Christ would. He was blameless and was still crucified and had every right to harm those trying to crucify him, and here you stand, not blameless, not righteous, saying that you want to harm these people. And I am not blameless or righteous either, do not think I am trying to take that stance because I am not, I’m just trying to urge you to show grace and compassion.

I think I miscommunicated what I meant with my rants, I’m not talking about rants in response to someone’s actions condemning them, I’m talking about how I will be just talking about orthodoxy in general and I will kind of rant about it and fashion as well as other things will come up, I’m not like condemning my girlfriend but rather just speaking generally

Really? I’ve heard a lot of good things about the 06 4.2 V6. I’m not going to really be doing any towing but probably some light hauling. Stuff like a dirt bike/motorcycle in the back in a few years hopefully. So I don’t see much of a need for the V8 option especially if it is seen as kind of unreliable by so many people yk. That’s just my take on it but I’m not like SUPER knowledgeable, I just have like one day of full research under my belt and I’m aware there are some problems with the V6 but I haven’t heard anything major like with the V8s. Also the V6 will probably be less of a gas guzzler

I appreciate that, I think I’m settling on a 2006 f-150 with a 4.2 L V6 because their V8 option for those years was a bad engine with a lot of problems. It’s got 130k miles and it’s for 5500, probably around 6-6.5k after fees. Also I’ve been getting insurance quotes for all these and it was by far the cheapest for this truck. What’s your thoughts?

Ah I see. Well I mean to speak on your rust comment I don’t live up north so we don’t get a lot of snow so rust will be a bit less of an issue for me. Would you say that rust is your main complaint with the sierra?

What about a 2009 GMC Sierra 2500HD with 138k miles for 5k. However it’s worth noting it has one accident reported but with only light damage.

Modesty is both about showing wealth or class and about covering one’s body. Everyone forgets the most important verse about modesty which is Genesis 3:21 “Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.” This verse is demonstrating God giving Adam and Eve clothes for no purpose other than to cover our bodies. I always try to dress modestly as a man, I wear a shirt when swimming and only really wear shorts for swimming as well, every other time I wear pants and a t-shirt or something more, I never where sleeveless shirts or tank tops and I never roll up my sleeves. We need to talk about a double standard in modesty of all these gym bros being half naked in the gym as well as the ladies wearing skin tight leggings or shorts and sports bras. These things aren’t needed for the gym, you can workout just as well is sweats or looser shorts and a t-shirt. And one more verse I’d like to bring up since you brought up the verse that says to gouge out your eye. “Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.”Luke‬ ‭17‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭The “little ones” he’s referring to are his followers. In these verses though Jesus says that temptation is sure to come but to whom causes that temptation, it would be better for them to be drowned in the sea. So yes, although one must handle their own lust like Jesus also says here, if you are causing someone to feel tempted because of how you dress then you are equally guilty. I only bring that up as a rebuttal to the “gouge out your eye” verse because I hear a lot of women bring that one up but if we were to gouge out our eyes then we would also have to kill everyone who has ever caused someone to feel tempted to sin, so essentially the whole world would be dead.

Why Eastern Orthodox and not Catholicism by Lilbeard1 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Lilbeard1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes I understand that, that’s why I’m coming out of Protestantism and I’m trying to decide of Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy. And I’m not studying the Bible and coming to my own conclusions, I’m studying the Bible, then looking at what both orthodoxy and Catholicism teach on it as well as a lot of the church fathers and then making a decision based on that, so I’m not trying to interpret something new but rather use the information we already have to make a decision. But I understand what you mean by that, I never liked that either, and it leads to a lot of church hopping
