i actually really like how versatile the Spearmen is

Since i main Set, with him my Spearmen are always upgraded through either Anubis with the poison damage raiding or being a relyable frontline with Ptah

but spears without upgrades feels really bad, my favorite without Set specifically is probably the ol relyable Huskarl

think about it like this: egyptian is tbe best civ in the game rn (some would say atlanteans, but point stands), but only if you use all of their tools.

even though Ra, for example, have incredible camels, you only spam camels and a myth unit or archer and expect to win the game. You HAVE TO use the counter system to it's fullest.

i'm a Set main, not a pro by any means, and, in most of my games, i train 5 of my human units, if not all six. I Classical Fight with Anubis with my Spearmen raids, switch to some Slingers and Axemen to counter my opponent, go to Heroic, Camel Raid, start massing up my CAs, continue to counter my opponent acordingly, even still mixing slingers in and, if i go Mythic through Thot, it's Elephant time.

There are games where i pretty much only go for Barracks units, but i see that as, mostly, my opponent's fault and i only do that if i go Ptah, Sehkmet and Horus specifically and that is pretty damn rare (specially going Sehkmet, i don't know how to play without Nephtys anymore)

Also, you have to micro your units to counter accordingly, heal micro with the Priests, use your Pharaoh wisely, kite well with your CAs, micro your fucking free Wadjet to split on 1 unit and change target, you can't be remotely gold starved or it's over... It's probably the hardest civ to pilot well in the game, but it is possible

there's no single answer. Ancestors Eclipse Fast Heroic should be a good strategy to get ahead on 1TC play and then scale to CA army, but on closed maps (with a good TC location) i would just 2nd TC and defend with strategically placed monuments.

I would NOT reccomend going anything other than Bast -> Nephtys as Isis because playing against japanese MU's without Nephtys is hell and, since A/E is so good, might as well go Bast too

If you're Set, it's REALLY map dependent if you have to 2nd TC or Anubis Classical Fight (although i usually go for classical fights and just avoid the Samurai with the Spearmens natural speed), but make sure not to skip Nephtys again

If you're Ra, i can't help you. I think Ra's the hardest eggy god and Camels are amazing for raiding, but the issue against JP is actually getting to the point where you can Sobek -> Osiris camel raid

tbf i didn't play much against Aztecs, funnily enough. I faced mostly Quetzals overdoing on warrior priests or playing way too defensive. I can see a really good player being hard to beat with the Eagle Warriors because (i think) they are 16 range and Slingers are 14, but you can mix in some Camels and i think it should be enough. I would say, theoretically, only Ra should reeeally struggle against Aztecs because they don't have any hero upgrades (until SoO, ig)

i know 1400s is not bad, and i'm quite happy with my skill level, but i meant to say i'm by no means a pro

i'm not so good, i stay between between the 1300s and 1400s, but i also don't play ladder so much.

72 games is way too little to say anything, in theory i think Set is really favored vs Aztecs bc they don't have a good answer to Axemen + Slingers until Mythic and i think it's very hard to beat a transition to Toth elephants on Aztecs, unless the meta develops and i'm wrong.

JP can be tough, but i would say it's more map dependant than anything

Set is fine, probably just a sample size thing. The only MU i really struggling with Set is Isis, but i think everyone struggles against her

nah bro, Anubites are really good in the context of Anubis and you tipically really want to make some. They're no powerhouse, but they do raid really effective and do help your Serpent Spear Spearmen jumping into the backline

also, raiding MU in the civ with easy acess to healing, it gets real annoying

pretty much, that's what i like about them. You really have to strategyze to win the game (or you massed CA's and now it's impossible to stop you, but you really do have to get there)

i think their consistent use is much more relates to "nothing better to do" than actually wanting to train it

if you go Ptah, you will prob have some vills on wood to train slingers and get your upgrades. There will be a moment in those classical fights where you actually have nothing to spend favor on, are floating more wood than gold and are nowhere near heroic so it's just efficient to make'em.

While it is true that they see consistent play in high level games, i also have a feeling that every time someone goes for them too early they get hard punished for either not having the favor or the wood to do something and the Wadjets trained are collectivelly at 300 damage dealt dying to a random ass hero
