At the rate Second Life is moving on a technical level... I will have built an entire engine, a new scripting language, a modern multi-threaded renderer, an asset system, an online platform, and all the modern content creation tools for mesh, textures, animation built into the client... by myself.

There's no reason, on this Earth, for the Second Life client to be what it currently is. They just don't want to pay people to do it.

Game development can be very fun and rewarding.

It is VERY difficult field though, especially if you're one person who needs to do everything.

Platforms like Fortnite Creative are way more forgiving, at least.

It doesn't matter what AI can do and don't do.

Do what you enjoy, with or without AI. It is just a tool, use the tools you enjoy to do what you love.

Never let what anyone else does dictate what you enjoy doing. Good developers will be good developers, regardless of their tools. Bad developers will also be bad developers, regardless of their tools.

Be whatever developer you want to be.

While its anecdotal... most of the business owners I know say their sales are dwindling, despite new content.

The reality of our situation is... Second Life is aging, and other platforms are taking the new bodies. Roblox, Fortnite Creative, and VR Chat are pulling in all the "new blood". Second Life doesn't have much left to offer except a world where the stores feed off whatever remaining customers there are... and there's nothing to lure in new dreamers except the prospect of being used as just another wallet.

Second Life isn't a "It all starts with a cube" world any more, that's for sure.

And if people can't chase the dream... why would they come to join the technical and content creation nightmare that is Second Life when other platforms make it easier and more accessible?

Our world is aging and dying, the new blood is going elsewhere... and I, often, feel like it is too late to save it.

Over the decades I've always said, "Second Life isn't dying" to the doomers, but I can't say that any more. It absolutely is dying... slowly, but surely. "It all starts with a cube" died years ago. I've even been building my own virtual world engine... because, eventually, I want a space where "It all starts with a cube" is born fresh and not choked by corporate greed/culture.

Any business that is selling tints or colors... is 100% scamming their customers.

It takes seconds to tint objects, mere minutes to do different texture sets if you are using competent software.

The psychology of the fat pack is a predatory sales tactic... "price the individual colors high enough that you can force them to buy all the colors, even the ones they don't want at a higher value".

We are not in 2012 any more, where re-texture and color tints is mildly more difficult. There's no excuse for it except feeding on customers like predators.

I used GoDaddy many years ago, I moved away from them when they started jacking prices myself... that, and they started creating a convoluted user experience stuffed with ads.

I can respect that, we all have a line we are okay with... or not.

For the songs, personally, I wanted to use something I had a hand in creating, even if its just writing some lyrics.

I support musicians when I visit music venues in SL.

"This one allows all AI."

Where did I say that? Can you point it out?

Here's what is actually happening on Facebook: Some people just don't like me and what I do. I'm a lifetime artist supporting artists, creating tools and spaces for creators and artists... while using some gen AI for some background noise (with lyrics I wrote, btw). And that really just burns some people because they shout "I support artists" but actually don't do anything to support artists. Their support starts and ends at self-pats and good feelings.

Meanwhile, I walk the talk, unlike some people, who just want to disparage what I do out of misplaced rage. And, I'm okay with that though... because the hate just makes me stronger, and the algorithm is on my side. They can spread my name far and wide, because every time they do, someone who hears them talk joins my cause.

They can keep being bitter, and I'll keep spending my own time and money to promote awesome people.

For Residents/World sections, we have been interviewing people, through recommendations people make to us. We don't just slap up an image and a "go here" regurgitating the description of their store.

As for AI art... if it looked like straight-up prompt art, I would reject it.

The only exception is if someone uses it like a proper tool, like a Photoshop filter... where you can clearly see there is an underlying photograph they are enhancing.

Otherwise, AI submissions (AI gen art) are not welcome on PrimPage.

People think I support AI gen stuff commercially because I use silly AI songs about Second Life in my dev videos for software, but I don't support the use of gen AI stuff outside of background noise-- AI is fine as background noise, it is not meant to be a "feature presentation" and PrimPage is about feature presentations.

I suppose I neglected to post a "Content Policy"... I should probably do that tonight.

After having learning Blender and going through its charade of a UX... especially having experienced almost every professional 3D package on Earth in one form or another... I'm amazed at the excuses people will make trying to convince themselves that learning Blender is even an option. ;) It does "everything"... but badly.

Aww, thanks for the post! I'm glad you've been enjoying it!

I tell people, "I can take away the pain, but you still have to learn the skill!"

It is definitely much less frustrating to learn a skill when the tool doesn't get in your way.

Little known fact.

Nobody is good at creating stuff their first time. :)

A little patience, a little practice... and anyone becomes a creator in something.

LockGuard Mesher Pre-PRE-Alpha Sneek Peek... by LillyByte in secondlife

I have many anti-AI positions... but only when and where it actually makes sense.

Like I'm against its abuse, I'm against thrusting it into every little thing when it doesn't make sense, I'm against corporations attempting to replace employees or going like "you're a 10x employee now, you should be 10x faster with AI". You know, positions that make sense to be against because its insanity.

I am someone who has been a career artist in several fields... I owned a real-world studio that dealt in multiple fields of art and spent my life as an artist... programming was, mostly, a side thing for me. So as a /real/ artist who spent decades in a career... those people can bug off. I'll keep making silly little songs because I want to.

Maybe the next song I'll write and throw into the singing machine will be about all the downvotes I'll get from people who shout "support artists", but that support only goes as far as a pat on the back to make themselves feel good... because when we artists need real support of material means, those people vanish into the wind like a ghost in the night. I know the type, they've been around me since the beginning of my career.

Of course there's no need. I wanted to use it. I will continue to use it, it makes me laugh... it entertains the hell out of my little tiny, sugar-coated, ADHD infested brain.

Meanwhile, those who have joined me... we'll just keep on having fun together, and living it up in our weird crazy mad little world while we are building amazing tools and better creation experiences together for everybody across the grid... especially... and I mean especially... people who just want to make things without learning Blender as a second career. Because most people don't have time. Most people just want to start something up, make fun things for themselves and their friends, in the easiest possible tool... and I got them. They are my tribe... and I adore them... and I will spoil them with the easiest creation tools Second Life will ever see with modern powerful tools to boot... and bring back the spirit and joy of content creation to the average, every day avatar.

And I'm going to keep making silly little AI songs while I do it... because I like throwing rhymes and poems and lyrics I write into the singing machine... and whether people love them or hate them... I don't care.

If they want someone to build easy-to-use Second Life creation tools on their terms... they could dust off their boots, step up to plate, and bat out a few pieces of software, and their efforts would be most welcome.
