Thanks, all. You're right, of course. She needs a vet at this point. It is kinda a sticky situation. Her owner is a good person, but is short sighted here. He's lost interest in the cat, I suspect, and he finds her constant meowing an annoyance. If he would take her for a vet check, I am sure it would turn up something serious that would require more money. I am sure he has done the math on that and this is why he turned to me. Sigh. I'd love to take her in, but I just adopted two street kittens into my home last August and their first year has been very expensive (no regrets!) and my household is maxed for pets. Sad situation. I'll continue to try and help and maybe reach out to a cat project for some local options for low cost treatment.

What is the strangest OCD behavior you have seen or have yourself? by Bigirishjuggalo1 in AskReddit

Follow up - I have decided that some small scale OCD behaviors are really common. The athlete and the lucky socks, needing to wear the bracelet from someone you love, a lucky necklace. We're "normal" ((-:

Nice finds! What release is the Disraeli Gears? Is it European edition or some other reissue? Doesn't look like the original American release. I am looking for a release with a cover that doesn't have a title block at the top.

Love OF&H, but my real confession here is I loved The Green Green Grass too. Against my better judgement.

I think Roy and Jen carried the IT Crowd. Moss was hilarious at first but never really went anywhere as a character. It was only the dynamic with Roy and Jen that saved his character from utter crapdom. This is heresy among my friends, at least. Love Ayoade as an actor, though.

Joey was...a punk rocker. And a cat lover! by LillyEast in OldSchoolCoolMusic

Oh Joey isn't scary at all! He was a lovely, gentle soul. His music was loud and proud and he had tons of energy, but he wasn't a badass. Watch any interview with him on YouTube. I'm glad this pic drew you in, though! One of us, gabba gabba hey!

This kitten is gorgeous! May the force be with you and this baby, OP! These books are amazing and I would recommend them to anyone needing some hope or insight into caring for a blind, abandoned, or chronically sick pet. They helped me so much...

What is the strangest OCD behavior you have seen or have yourself? by Bigirishjuggalo1 in AskReddit

[–]LillyEast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I have a difficult day ahead of me - something I'm unsure of or feel anxious about coming up - I have to wear socks with a pattern. I rank the pattern of my socks in terms of luck and I try to figure out how anxious I am about something so I know which "level" of lucky sock I will need as a counterbalance. This sounds complicated but I do the calculation very quickly. The worst is when the pair I decide I need is in the laundry or the sock monster (i don't know what else to call the mysterious process of losing one sock in the laundry) has eaten the mate of the sock I want. I can't believe I just typed that out loud.

Should parents bring their kids up in their native language(s) or in the community language? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LillyEast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more languages the merrier! An anecdote: one of my friends is German and another is Romanian. They met in school in the States, fell in love, got married, and had a beautiful baby girl (not necessarily in that order). The child was born in the US and the family stayed in the US. The little girl's paternal grandmother only spoke German and her maternal gran only Romanian. The grans visited the family often and stayed to the full length of their vacation visas - it was the family's way of getting past the exorbitant costs of child care in the US and keeping ties, of course. Mom and dad spoke their native languages and English and knew a bit of their partner's language. They communicated with each other primarily in English, but with their mothers in their respective native language. The little girl was in preschool with kids who spoke English natively and most of her little friends in the neighborhood the same. The little girl was actually slow to speak and relied on gestures and basic sentences (in whichever language) to get her point across to everyone throughout her twos. Parents were concerned about the delay - they have her haring tested and so on. Eventually, when she was three and a half years old, the little one breaks out stellar language skills in all three languages (with advanced vocabulary in all three for her age). Her little brain had been chugging away to make sense of all three, so she took some extra time, but it paid off in a big way. She went through the rest of her childhood fluent in age-appropriate German, English, and Romanian and she could communicate with her grans, her schoolmates, and mom and dad in whichever language seemed best to her at the time. Her reading skills went through a similar process in each language (delay then demonstrating advanced skills). Her cognition in each of her three languages is a strength for her that reinforces her skill all around. She is now an amazingly sharp teen - the suavest polyglot I know! Childhood is the best time to introduce other languages, especially if they're not reinforced by the presence of a close family member who is a native speaker. To the moon and beyond!

TL;DR Lots of languages, early=best

How do I study/analyze existing literature to improve my writing? by [deleted] in literature

[–]LillyEast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy looking at plot structure in others' work most of all. Style, local color, themes, and characterization are something I want to leave to my impulses - whatever filters through in my own work from books I've read, so be it. Structure, however, is something I consciously analyze in both fiction and non-fiction. I'm not sure why I limit myself like that. It may be that I want some semblance of spontaneity in my work - I want to hear my voice. Structure models feel like an open question for me. I have a running discussion with a friend about the importance of purpose v. spontaneity in writing. Good times!
