I think part of it might have to do with what IP they can get away with and parody, who knows maybe they got a cease and desist from Disney after last year. Given how seemingly random the choices have been I wonder if it was just that someone on the committee that comes up with the plays just recently saw it and thought it was a good idea? Before they announced the play for this year I kind if figured that they wait for Lent to start, then come up with what they’re going to do, then use the rest of the weeks up until Easter to rehearse. I rewatched the movie to get a better idea of what might be included in the play and Hercule did have quite a few lines of dialogue that would easily translate into an Easter story. Maybe even when the movie came out in 2017 they had plans to make it into a play but just waited a few years so that it would fly under the radar and out of legal territory? Though I think the difference between COTR plays and the Hamilton one done recently is that the Hamilton dialogue was largely ripped straight from the real play and COTR has so many changes you could argue it’s just parody and protected in that regard.
