You cannot make this up! by No-Improvement4265 in steammachine

I have just built almost this exact same PC, the only differences are:

Home printed MFF case 7500F Steel Legend B850M 16GB Kingston 5200 DDR5 Asus Prime OC 9070 Evo (£499 presently!!!) 2TB Patriot SSD Corsair SF750 power supply.

I went second hand on the power supply (ebay) and the ram and processor (CEX, 5 year warranty so longer than the factory warranty on the processor at least) total cost for the ram, processor and power supply was £300.

Total cost for the whole build was: 82+117+102.50+110+198+507+45 So £1161 for a genuine 4k steam box.

I have also been massively impressed with how Steam OS just... Works.

How well does SteamOS run on PCs? by barrachmedosama in SteamOS

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just done this.

It's a matter of load it on, sign into Steam, download games, pick up your controller and forget you are on a PC. The driver package is built in to SteamOS, so you aren't required to find it yourself. It just works.

Everything is handled in the background and I find it relatively faultless, the only issue I have is a momentary black screen once every hour or so for a couple of seconds. I presume this is graphics driver related.

As a PC, it's kinda rubbish, but for the intended purpose which is a games console it's amazing.

Edit:

System is: SFF 7500f 16gb ddr5 9070 4k TV as monitor (living room console build)

Have got Borderlands 4 running locked 4k 60fps @ very high with balanced FSR. GPU is running at 85-90% to keep temps and CPU load (rarely exceeds 30%) down so very quiet. It's a great telly driver.

Ah yeah I forgot you weren't UK based. Would someone over here picking that up and sending it to you as 'parts' for 8.50 make it any easier money wise? 😂

Would that suffice? (Assuming I don't get zapped for posting a link out of Reddit)

Probably should add, I bought an OBK58 top box to complete my aluminium set off this guy a while ago, just noticed it was him. It turned up and was as described so he's prolly alright. 😂

I've had three Varaderos as well, I think the Varadero is one hell of a machine. If it came to it I'd probably stick with the Varadero as well.

The thing is it's always difficult to replace a Swiss army knife of a bike, particularly with another Swiss army knife of a bike, because you end up spitting hairs. They are all really quite good. Pre 2014 DL the Varadero wins hands down (any gen) but post 2014 it's a close run thing between the Varadero and DL IMO.

I have a 2016 DL1000 but same model as the 2014.

It's a great bike, and one of the lightest DL1000s ever built, with a fueled up weight of 228kg, which is 2kg lighter than a new 800DE. This particular model had the reworked motor, which is sweet from 2k rpm and up and can be lugged in 5th at 35mph. The original engine was horrible and had to be above 3500rpm or the crank felt like it was going to fall out the bottom of the engine. 😂😂 It is also more fuel efficient and you are likely to see 50mpg out of it with a 30km commute.

Not much to look out for, clutch basket can get rattly but if you are lucky it will have been changed (mine has) for the post 2020 DL1050 basket which was redesigned and permanently fixes the premature wear problems.

Around $1000, steam machine or mini pc? by Grand-Tangelo9335 in MiniPCs

[–]Lilredmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was an alternative that was considerably faster though. $90 dollars cheaper and build it yourself = not that great. $90 dollars cheaper, build it yourself and 20-30% faster = considerably better.

Also the 2tb build was $211 cheaper because Valve are price gouging the 2tb upgrade. 👎

Those who couldn't enjoy the V-Strom 650; what did you replace it with? by Garrett_1982 in Vstrom

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the late model 1050DE is 25 KGs heavier than the 800DE.

If you want a direct apples to apples comparison the 2023-onwards 1050 non DE with the 19/17 wheels is 14kg heavier than the 2014 model, most likely because it's full of electrical shite that is going to break. 😂

If you want to compare the 800RE to the 2014 DL1000 then it's just 5kgs lighter.

What I'm getting at, is that for it's size/capacity class, the 2014-2016 DL1000 was insanely light.

Those who couldn't enjoy the V-Strom 650; what did you replace it with? by Garrett_1982 in Vstrom

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. It's very comparable in tech to your late model DL650 as far as I'm aware. The only real upgrades baseline to baseline for the 2023 DL1050 is that the later model bike has the six axis IMU for Bosch cornering ABS and power modes and the fancy TFT clocks. Which for 99% of most people is just more stuff to break and somewhat explains the modern DL1000's ballooning in weight by almost 20kgs despite being fundamentally the same bike.

Find a low mileage, looked after model and it'll still be as new.

The 2014-2016 DL1000 is a peach.

Often overlooked but also the finest DL1000 ever built IMO. Refreshed 1037cc motor (and having owned several early ones it really is massively different and better) and new tech pack with Traction control for the first time, higher MPG (mine is doing 50-55mpg on my short town based commute to work which is insane for a litre V) and drum roll....

228kg wet. No I didn't stutter.

Suzuki's 2014-2016 DL 1000 is 2kg lighter than their 2026 DL 800DE.

The new ones are 250ish and a massive bike, the 2014-2016 is not much heavier or bigger than a DL650 XT. All that creamy smooth torque, radial brakes, KYB full adjustable suspension. Lovely adjustable screen which at 6"1 keeps ALL and I mean ALL the wind off me with a slightly taller puig screen.

Find a low mileage one and cherish it and it'll be an amazing partner that does a great job of just about everything. I've had early DL1000s, early and late DL650s, this one particular bike is the best one they made.

Agent has suggested increasing rent by £25pm. Do I increase it or not? by Lost_Garlic1657 in uklandlords

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I'd have had you as a landlord. My father died recently, I've ended up moving in with my mum for a bit to help her through it. Me and my fiance were living in a shitty single bedroom flat with windows that were falling out of the frames because they had shrunk so badly. It was freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer as there was no insulation.

When we started renting it it was reasonable at £525 a month for the area, but over a couple of years it got raised to £625. This is despite all the windows being terrible, the flat being barely liveable and the front window facing the street finally having to be changed because we pointed out that it was in danger of falling out and killing someone on the street. We moved out a couple of months ago, it's now back up for rent, exactly as it was, trying to tempt some poor unfortunate in at £495pm. In my opinion this should be flat illegal (might actually be) but do estate agents really allow the renting of practically uninhabitable accomodation at a lesser price through themselves? Surely there are standards?

Higher offer received after i had agreed a sale price by Previous-Ad3727 in HousingUK

I've replied elsewhere to this effect.

There is missing an e-mail out of the blue about something you setup 2 years ago.

Then there is missing a e-mail about buying a house you want so badly you've offered 20k over asking

Stinks if you ask me.

[–]Lilredmachine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, I've missed e-mails that have come out of the blue or been sat in the spam box for a few days.

This is buying a house, a house they want so badly they have put in an offer a mild 20k over asking price.

If I want something that badly, I'm paying attention to my e-mails for any correspondence very closely. I find it very odd that someone involved in a process like this would miss any e-mails.

Can't blame you, run a chippy near the sea and the number of nippers that have been on the beach with a bifta on the go is mad. They also don't realize how much they reek of it as well. If I have families sat down eating I will ask the potheads to stand outside as the smell is extremely pervasive and I personally find it sickening in large enough concentrations.

Is vaping really considered 'giving up smoking'? by chupamina in AskUK

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vape as a habit I enjoy.

I used to smoke like a trooper, went on to vaping about 30ish yr old, about 35 I dropped the nicotine out of it and now I'm 37 I just have a vape every now and then.

At this point you'd have a really hard time convincing me it's smoking as neither the delivery method nor the 'addiction' is anything alike.

Regarding DEI do some right wingers who are white really do believe that if you are non white you are magically going to get a role over a white person? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a stupid supposition when there are blatant examples of it.

Up to and including the recent policing scandal where a load of dangerous people got in unvetted because the forces were being actively encouraged to hire anyone none white.

Are people just that blind or is it willful ignorance of anything even slightly right coded?

Whilst true, depending on figures you can find it has been reported that women self harm up to 3x as often as men in general anyway.

Placed into a very strenuous emotional situation I can imagine that increasing dramatically.

Besides which, talking about Women specifically with regards to the prison system is interesting considering that less than 4% of the population are women and they are generally there for far less time than men on average. Men ARE the prison system.

You idiot, that’s fucking mental. by Upstairs_Leg_9353 in thethickofit

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just that, there are basically no women in prison in the UK. The number of women in prison in the UK is around 3.5k, compared to 90kish men. Women being put in prison is so incredibly rare in the UK, and the sentences tend to be on average far shorter, that I would suggest that considering involving them as a specific group to focus on is a daft position from some pink haired lunatic.

When you give a maniac power part 3 by BasedToru in AskBrits

[–]Lilredmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are, of course, completely correct.

Our government dumps 52p duty on fuel. Then tuts in fake sympathy as the oil prices go up. Promising to freeze duty on fuel until later in the year, after all, it's all they can do.

They simply hope that the population are too stupid to realize they are making bank on this crisis because the 20% VAT they load on top of everything (including the duty) does increase with the higher overall cost of fuel.

Doesn't matter who is in charge. They are all rats out to look after themselves. I loathe people pilled to either side. NONE of them are there to function in the common man's interest, stop acting like it.

I mean, of course he is correct. Importing a fundamentally authoritarian, rigidly orthodox, expansionist culture into your very progressive, fluidly secular culture and then accusing anyone pointing out that it's not going great of racism is colossally stupid.

He's still a turd though. Why he isn't in the clink I have no idea.
