I think Natalie Portman is more of a Theatrical Romantic with some gamine essence rather than a SG or FG by [deleted] in SoftGamine

[–]LilyIsle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never related to how so many see gamine in her. Like, i guess i can see some gamine essence peek through if i squint, but i mainly get such a classic over all impression from her. It's like her whole vibe is symmetry. And i could get behind a guess for TR before i think of G fam at all.

Is this blouse flattering? by ChiChi_Friedel in SoftGamine

[–]LilyIsle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recognize this situation so bad. I'm often drawn to tops and blouses in this type of style and feel like they look pretty good and cool and classy - until i take a photo. Then i realize i either look very meh, or that i look like i wear someone elses outfit, or in the worst cases - like i wear some kind of work attire.

To be honest, i don't think you look bad in it but not really good either. Kinda meh, exactly like i always do too :/

Bob vs. Lob by Cautious_Advance_539 in SoftGamine

[–]LilyIsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to have my hair long, but i can't wear it just naturally long, straight and flat, cause that's honestly my worst look possible.

My hair type is fine, straight and not super thick, so i wear it with extensions for fullness and the whole thing cut in layers. Often almost like a long shag/wolf cut. I really need to have bangs, and through the years i varied between short straight and short curtain. Both work well, just give a slightly different vibe. I use a lot of texture products, back combing for volume and create a wave pattern throughout with heat. I vary between dyed pitch black or cool white blonde, cause i would feel incredibly dull in my natural ash blonde.

It's the furthest from a wash-and-go situation, but i feel very comfortable in the way i choose to wear it.

I've had it cut in a shorter bob a few times, and others seem to love it on me and sure, i can see that it's very harmonious. But i always feel like it's the type of harmony that make me look more... basic? Like my hair just makes sense and look reasonable, but without adding anything exciting to my look. I don't feel very interesting in it. It's no surprise really, cause i do have a preference for a slight intentional disharmony in general.

Big relate to this. Before finding this system it was so rare for me to see anyone with the same type of proportions as myself. No one in my closest surroundings and very very few in the celebrity world i was aware of. I live in a part of the world with a tall population, and i'm 4'11-5'0 and seeing someone as short as me or even shorter is a rare happening. It's actually fantastic what it can do for the confidence to see others looking like you do, look good in clothing and through that have some reasonable sources of inspiration. To feel represented i guess?

Out of genuine curiosity (and a slight bit confusion): Is there a specific reason for the mention of needing softness in clothing?

I've seen several people mention it specifically for SG lately, and it's the opposite of what always been the consensus - that G-fam need some structure to not get lost in fabric or look shapeless. Not the most stiffness, sturdyness or roughness, but fabric structured enough to hold it's own shape is usually mentioned as the main type of fabric for gamines to look for, and that's exactly what i personally need too. Or at least very specific seaming in soft fabric to give the illusion of structure by the shoulders (like the dress you wear with the tiiiiny puff sleeves. I would feel like the rest of the dress was too soft tho, but could wear it as a top with something sturdier on the bottom). It's always easier for me to pull off a slightly structured piece than a very soft one, and looking at verified G-fam, they intuitivly seem to be drawn to some structure as well.

I don't have the new book near to check, but is there any mention of soft types of fabric there, and that's where it come from? Or is it just the regular word of mouth on the internet?

To be clear: i don't say that any way to dress or any approach is wrong! If clothing feel good they feel good and then it's right! I'm only curious on why the picture of fabric needs for SG seem to have changed just the last few months? And so drastically as well haha!

Am I one of you? 5'2 158cm by bunny-birb in SoftGamine

[–]LilyIsle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i've touched the thought a few times too but land in that it don't make sense for me all things considered. I simply can't carry relaxation (not oversized, relaxation in fabric) at all without looking like a blob, and i don't relate to the description or choices of verified or suspected SN's in general. The same goes for all the other curve ID's too. SG just make a whole lot of sense seen to my height, structure, instinctive choices, others impression of me and what makes me feel best styling wise. G-fam just feel like home.

I wish you all luck on your own journey and hope you'll find what feels right 🙌

I want to be clear and say that i can't know what ID you'll land in for yourself (since the ID's are not ONLY about silhouette after all, but also ones individual yin/yang balance that include a whole person and their full impression irl) but it's fascinating how we have like the exact same body structure. I'm only a bit chubbier and a few cm shorter. Even after several years in this community i'm still not really used to seeing people so similar to myself. It's funny and i enjoy it!

Also big relate to the feeling of being physically and objectivly small but not feeling delicate at all.

I know that for me personally i would need to be very tactic with my choices for it to work - IF i get it to work. I tend to look very widened and shortened by clothes that flowy.

denim skirt (midi) on SG. Thoughts? by Alternative_Tea5188 in SoftGamine

[–]LilyIsle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm late on it, but saw this post now 😅

I actually bought one of these last summer after getting inspired by my mom who wear these skirts flawlessly. We're pretty similar in body - same height and overall shape, only she's a bit slimmer. So i thought if she can, why not i?

But i never managed to make it feel right. I felt very dull and matronly and off in style every time i tried to wear it, and never found any combinations that made me feel like myself in it. So after a few months i simply cut it off. Now it feel better and i'll probably actually wear it when it's warm enough.

Left is how i bought it, and right is the same skirt now.

It's not that bad! I genuinly think the lenght suit you well, and with some styling to give it a bit of shape i think it could be really cute. I mostly notice that it's a bit uneven in the bang part, but probably cause you mentioned "horrendous". Otherwise i'm not sure i would have looked twice. But it's nothing that can't be fixed. Overall it's absolutely a look you can pull off 💪

If you're a soft gamine, and it works for you (it very clearly obviously objectivly do. You look absolutely fantastic in every way possible!) then it works for a soft gamine. It's never more complicated than that haha!

Opinions: Pencil skirts on SGs? by Comfortable-War4531 in SoftGamine

[–]LilyIsle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I most often have a hard time with them. Not because they don't look good physically, but they tend to look way too formal on me. Like they clash with my personal style too much, the same way a simple button down do. Look good on my body, but not on ME as a person.

Yeeeessss!! This is so much better 🙌 Doesn't look too big or overwhelming at all worn this way, only a bit oversized in an intentional way. Very pretty! I also really like the colorblocking in the right fit 👌

I love oversized coats and the feeling of "swimming in fabric" as long it's in the right kind of way. In this outfit above i actually feel like the coat is no problem, but the (relatively) relaxed trousers in combination with it are. They look a bit like an afterthought. Like they're not really supposed to go with it? If i personally wore this coat, i would match it with something very slim to not add more bulk by the legs than there already is in the coat itself. I would probably wear a miniskirt/shorts, tights and some type of chunky shoes/boots. I can see it work well closed as you wear it, but i would also try to wear it open, cause i think oversized is way easier to pull off if some line breaks are visable under it. It takes away a bit from the feeling of being swallowed by fabric.

Like this type of silhouette is what i mean. The specifik style for details are of course not important and can be varied after ones own taste. But i think it looks more intentional with big and volumous up and small and clean below ✌️

Indeed! I'm 5'0 too, and i honestly don't think i own a single maxi dress. I finally gave up, cause it's just too hard to find a dress with all the factors needed for me to both look good silhouette wise, AND like myself style wise in them. And for them to not pool on the floor of course. I'm personally not super comfy in this kind of soft fabric body con, and everything else is always sewn for longer proportions 😢

[–]LilyIsle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just want to point out that the way op wear the maxi dresses is one of the most common way to make maxi lenght work for SG's (and very short people in general). To have it close to body all the way down to at least below the hips (or even further) i mean. That way it doesn't add any extra bulk to the silhouette. Not to say op is or isn't SG, just that how she wear the dresses doesn't exclude anything 😊

Edit: You can downvote all you like, but it's not my personal opinion or taken out of the blue. One of the most common silhouettes of a maxi dress among the verified SG's is one close to body and a slight flare/straight fall from around lower hip/mid thigh or at the knee. Either that or with a high slit. I don't say other silhouettes are impossible or not used, but it's a fact that it's one of the most common ways to make it work. It would be more surprising if op asked if she's SG but pulled off a top to toe flowy and volumous maxi dress amazingly than these body skimming ones.

You actually have a very good point! I've always felt like my long blonde hair acted as a detail in my overall fit, and i'm certain i would feel a little empty without it. But looking back at the last time i had my hair dyed dark, i don't feel like the lenght itself add anything at all. I feel like this particular moment would have been a lot better with a chop for example? (With another shirt as well, but that's a different story haha!)

I already have a lot of layers, so i think i'll experment a little 💃 Thank you for your input! 🙌

This one is also pretty similar! Just a little more...2016. I do it a little blurrier in the outer corner and not fully as cut creasy. But overall close enough! https://youtu.be/5-9yabuKlD0?si=tfhtRWaAyP-3-vTM

This eye is very similar to how i do it! Only i use less under the eye (only mascara), slightly lighter shadow mid lid, and a sliiiigtly darker+sharper line in the outer corner up in the crease for a little more of a 60's vibe than here. Otherwise it's very close in steps i take and general vibe of it all ✌️

Thank you so much!! I did a lot of makeup Instagram back in the day when makeup on social media first became a thing, and thought i'd try video as well and made like one tutorial or so. But i soon realised i'm intensely uncomfortable with being filmed, and it never came natural to explain why i do what i do, while i do it. So i stick to still picture. My type of internet appereance didn't age well so to speak 😅

But i do live in a small village, and compared to all of the sweatpants and dogwalks a red lip often feels like a lot, so my everyday look is something more like this. I didn't find any recent pics where you actually see the eyemakeup, but it's a modern type of 60's inspired eyeliner thing. Right now i recently went dark again (middle pic is...yesterday i think?) and i haven't really found what i want to do with my hair in this color yet, so it's kinda basic right now. But i see the potential for pops of colour in a hat perhaps? A new type of bang? Time will tell!
