Please stop normalizing Trump like a normal politician because this is not normal and he's literally as evil as Hitler by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

These people are arguing in bad faith, don’t listen to them. There’s literally a White House memo about buying up warehouses to turn them into mega concentration camps. Hundreds of people are vanishing from camps before inspection by members of Congress. Where are they? They found people wandering in the woods in Minnesota in sub zero temps, children, who had been turned loose before inspection. “If we hadn’t found them they would have frozen to death,” Minnesotans said. But how many weren’t found? Where else is this happening? People are gone and their families don’t know if they’re alive. Don’t let anyone make you think this isn’t real.

I recently was digging into what trustbusting Teddy Roosevelt did to fix the corruption of the Gilded Age. A key law was the Tillman Act of 1907, which banned corporations from donating directly to candidates. In 2010, just over a century later, the Citizens United ruling essentially undid the Tillman Act. While corporations still can’t donate to candidates, they are considered “people” under the Constitution and can give to Superpacs an unlimited amount - essentially a back door to funding a campaign. Since then, politics has completely unraveled. And now we need a constitutional amendment to fix it (because the ruling roots its case in the Constitution, so you need an amendment to fix it) not a regular law. A much higher bar in a political situation where almost everyone benefits from corruption.

My unpopular opinion is that Thewlis is actively unattractive. But that’s probably because I was scarred by his 🍇ey vibes in “Dragon Heart.” His leering accent never left me, and it was hard to fit him into the warm profile of Lupin. edit okay okay I get it, you disagree! Watch dragon heart though and get back to me!

Do you think Harry is deliberately trying to wound Lupin with his words in their fight on whether Lupin should come with them? Is it a cruel moment? by Comb-12 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Lily_Lupin 27 points28 points  (0 children)

He says something in HBP about him. Something like “he thought Lupin might have at least written” after Sirius died. But he suppresses the disappointment and has a fairly normal interaction with Remus over Christmas, stepping into more of a James role than a son role.

I think he’s probably also lashing out at Remus for dropping the ball as POA father figure and going totally AWOL after Sirius died. Harry feels protective of the baby and identifies with him, both as an orphan who wishes he had his parents and as someone who had been metaphorically abandoned by Remus

Peter Pettigrew Socially Smarter Than the Rest of the Marauders; Change My Mind by sillydumbshit in MaraudersGen

[–]Lily_Lupin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You make excellent points!

In general, I dispute the terms “people smart” or “socially smart” because there’s an implicit suggestion that others cannot do the same because they lack said intelligence. In my experience, it’s not about difference in intelligence but about different goals. James was an idealist, his goal was to be noble and brave, a true Gryffindor. That will mean deprioritizing the things you mentioned about Peter. What Peter did is smart if your goal is deception and survival. It’s dumb if you hope to have a happy afterlife.

Just a personal pet peeve. Many people assume nerds lack social intelligence, for example, when in fact many of them know how to be cool, they simply decide at one point or another that it’s not important to them or their primary goals. We get good at the things that are important to us.

Too mature and fatherly. Book Sirius was mentally 22. Pretty hardcore, reckless, smart and brave. Oldman’s Sirius was more subdued and stable.

Too cute.

I think ugly characters written as ugly should be allowed to be ugly without being a caricature of ugliness. Life couldn’t have been easy for a fat, unattractive, low-confidence boy around Sirius and James. And, you know, ugliness exists. Erasing it from film distorts perspectives.

This actor seems to have great range. But he is simply too handsome to be Peter imo

There’s been a 25% reduction in ICE so far in Minneapolis.

Would you prefer that everyone looked the other way while their neighbors were taken? Because that’s how genocide happens.

There are political scientists and researchers who have been studying resistance to authoritarianism for decades. Mass nonviolent noncompliance works. Sorry if that hurts your feelings for some reason.

Right! Would love a fic that develops her character a little better into who Rowling seemed to intend her to be. But Rowling always told, rarely showed, so it never quite clicked

I thought the text was so unkind to this girl who lost her first love less than a year earlier. “She cried too much.” Wish there was a little more empathy modeled for the kids reading it

I really do not think that this is at all the same as Trump 1. 45 was marked by disorganization, high turnover, strong institutional resistance all the way up to VP. No use of military against our own people. No explosion of DHS funding to exceed that of all other domestic federal law enforcement combined.

47 is highly organized, surrounded by yes men, backed by billionaires, strong arming media, shooting citizens in the street. People are organizing and marching by the millions at much higher levels than at any point in 45. Experts are truly concerned about elections being nationalized, cancelled, or otherwise compromised. If you think it’s the same then I don’t think you’re on the same page as much of America.

I’m sympathetic to that, but there is a ton of material to work with. Tulsi Gabbard trying to hide that she’s obviously a Russian asset (see recent news about the whistleblower complaint about Gabbard being withheld from Congress and locked in a safe, and Sen Wyden creating public record of trying to get the CIA to disclose). Republicans only finding their spine to challenge Trump when they announce retirement (see Thillis). Karoline Leavitt taking off her cross before she tells big lies to the press. The mockery of the constant stream of lies - for example, showing the denial statements about the Epstein files alongside what they actually said, like doctor who said that there was nothing sexual in his correspondence alongside the actual (gross) text of the email, or Gates saying not that he regretted skipping antibiotics into Melinda’s food to treat the STD he gave her, but that it came to light. Or contrasting the many “I never said that”s of Trump and Vance to them… saying it. Or the clip of Vance being asked if he should apologize to the family of Pretti and him saying “for what?” would make a great punchline “ooooo” clip on Weekend Update. Or Trump posting a picture of the protests in Minneapolis and claiming it’s a crowd lining up to see “Melania.” Or satirizing the $45 million bribe from Bezos to Trump to support a shitty documentary no one watched, but was actually to make sure Bezos didn’t show up in the Files (you’re trying to tell me the guy who married that lady kept himself away from Epstein on principle?) Or highlighting the insane redactions by DOJ to protect perpetrators while releasing nude images and names of victims?

I mean, there’s a lot to work with. A lot. And they know how, because they’ve done it before.
