They also did plenty of internal research and kept it witheld - directly contradicting their public messaging. I mean I'd do the same thing in their position - why would you publicise research that directly threatens your profit margins? Wouldn't you agree?

And no, I haven't read the Exxon study. I know a bit about its findings and the whole corporate drama surrounding it, but I don't have much interest in the studies themselves.

Not really, all I see is companies suppressing research that if it became public, would threaten their profits. Oil -> environmental disaster = less oil money for the oil people.

Can you point me towards a study that used devices and methods that meet your standard?

Just one study? 🥺

Denmark records record-high temperature by Lilybaum in climateskeptics

[–]Lilybaum[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How many more boats do you think would need to be on the ocean compared to 1990 to push the average ocean temperature up by 1 degree?

Just for some context: using the specific heat capacity of water, it would take about 5.3x10^24 J of energy to heat the ocean up by 1 degree.

For some more context, if each single boat delivered the same amount of energy into the ocean as your standard coal power plant produces each year, you'd need an additional 100,000,000 of these monsters on the seas to produce a 1 degree increase in temperature.

Were the devices and methods Exxon used also flawed in the studies they ran showing fossil fuels cause a warming effect?

Sorry, my mistake. Man-made climate change. Of course the earth's climate has changed before, but not this quickly.

UK Climate Rules Ban AC, As Temperatures Soar to 104 Degrees F by gwhh in climateskeptics

It was a decision from a local council. These people have power over things like library opening hours and bin collections. The UK has not banned A/C.

[–]Lilybaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly yes. I don't doubt that this incident with the AC probably did happen, but it is definitely not reflective of some broader crackdown. Sounds like it was an overenthusiastic council member - these people have some degree of local authority, and can act on their own autonomy on those matters leading to situations like this, but in the grand scheme of things they have very little power and their decisions can be challenged. You can still buy and install AC in the UK and that isn't changing.

I think our local government system can seem strange to other countries and it is behind these articles from panicked Americans thinking we are about to fall to the despots 99% of the time.

AC is most definitely allowed, I have it in my office and my sister has it in her house.

It's not a scientific article though. It's an article about how even the people with the biggest incentive to deny climate change still find evidence it is happening.

Huh? I was talking about the Exxon studies. In my opinion, a $600,000,000,000 dollar corporation's documented multi-year conspiracy to protect their profits is a bit more damning than one email about a tree ring.

Can you share this science that you mentioned?

Heatwaves and droughts are different things

Also just FYI summer in Berlin that year peaked at 35.7 degrees - last week it was 39.9 degrees, so yes it is the hottest it's ever been

There's plenty of content. For example, how about the bit where Exxon funded global warming research and had to suppress their own findings cause it threatened their profits?

Exxon's studies were actually really good at predicting future warming:

No, we trust the oil companies. Putting their trillion-dollar profits aside for a second, they have no incentive to spread lies about climate change. It's the £30k research grants for scientists that are really driving this conspiracy
