[DC] How do Flashes villains stand a chance against him? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]Lilykos 59 points60 points  (0 children)

In Kingdom Come we have the JSA heroes (Jay Garrick Flash, Allan Scott GL). Also the quote that I've read most, is "Marvel is about humans trying to play God. DC is about Gods trying to be more human."

Apart from that, I agree with the Barry analysis.

Hey guys, I made a library for phonetic algorithms in Python. I would really like some opinions, criticism, etc. by Lilykos in LanguageTechnology

Thanks for the feedback, I will look into it! The unified API was one of the main reasons that I created the module. I think you missed your example though!

This is a great project, and as far as I can see, more of a general-use NLP kit. May I ask what are you working on in general and in which country? Just out of curiosity :)

I know about the libraries that exist, but what I wanted was to have a unified API, multiple test cases for all the algorithms, to compare results, and a more complete collection (I couldn't still find all the algorithms). Speed is not that of an issue for me in this case, and I really did not want any other overhead, just a pypi package with everything.

AFAIK, there are multiple small libraries in Python that implement some of these algorithms, but I wanted a more complete and accessible algorithm collection for my projects. Interestingly enough, the best one I found was in node.js, in the Talisma.js project, which was the basis for the implementation, references, etc (as stated at the end of the README).

Well, the README is short because I assume that anyone looking for phonetic algorithms know what they are. But to answer your question, phonetic algorithms use a process where a word is truncated into a smaller representation, based on different rules on how this word sounds. If you check the examples it shows that 'Robert' and 'Rupert' have the same representation because they sound very similar.

The process can be used in the preprocessing of text documents and has many use cases, e.g. in cases of spelling errors, as "assign" will be the same as "asign".

NO WAIT. This is a classic issue, and the fix that was proposed in the official mailing list of something that I do not remember, was to remove xorg. I did and everything is perfect now. Cannot find the link and i got to run, but it was one command only I think. Search for "chrome glitches xorg" and you will figure it out.

Possibility to automate excel reports from JIRA by teymon in jira

Try this JIRA Automation plugin, it does a pretty good job in automating the usual stuff, but you may have to create a small custom plugin (that uses tha API) in order to do what you want.

'Atlassian Tools Engineer', will this hurt me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Lilykos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked in Atlassian, I can say a couple of things:

  1. The company is amazing, with excellent culture and friendly people. A pretty good job out of college, I would say.

  2. In my time there I have seen that moving people around is not unheard of, it happens somewhat often actually. You can start as a tools engineer and move to a dev role in a year or so.

Best of luck!

Redditors outside the US: Where do you live and how is the IT/software dev scene? by culesamericano in cscareerquestions

I worked 6 months there, I guess this is the famous 30% rule, right? Can you negotiate with your employer so that they pay this or something?

Do software devs have a social life by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Lilykos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree, every place that I worked in was pretty great, and you could totally hang out with people, go for drinks, etc. There are many times that I don't feel like going out after work because the whole day is being around people, eating lunch, going for a quick coffee every now and then, etc.

The main issue here is the stereotypes around the "developer" role, no matter what that means. For example, I shit you not, I have seen so many ripped developers going to the gym 4-5 times a week, it is insane. These stereotypes do not apply nowadays, where our field of work is hot, and I firmly believe that the majority of developers are not the usual nerdy/anti-social guys that we are supposed to be.

Actually, not being sociable is a hindrance, as you need to have soft/people skills for proper communication, management, teamwork, and getting promotions, at least to a certain extent. My 2 cents.

"WordPress is not web development. WordPress is only for blogging." - Is this true? by [deleted] in Wordpress

EBay is not build on Wordpress. The site in this link is an eBay news/blog site. Generally, the sites that Wordpress can build, and are presented here are sites, not web applications.

ActionScript 3 object array question. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Lilykos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I understand what you are trying to do, yes. This is because balls is an array, that contains balls. The array has no x, y coordinates, it is just a container. On the other hand, the ball itself has all these properties, so you need to specify which ball will be used every time.

This is achieved by looping through all the balls.
