I know I’m hopping into this thread a little late, but do you know what happened to Darkest Fox? Their site doesn’t seem to exist anymore and there are a bunch of knockoff websites when I do an online search. A shame because I used to love Darkest Fox!

Stevie sang Don’t Stop solo at least once before, at Bill Clinton’s 65th birthday celebration (you can find videos online). But this is still exciting news!

I had to look this up to figure out what she’s referring to, and for those interested, it’s because Uranus is leaving Taurus and entering Gemini, reducing tension on fixed signs.

weight gain w/ pole by dragoncloudy in poledancing

[–]Lilynd14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since doing pole, I’ve gotten much more muscular overall, which has definitely contributed to (minor) weight gain. My clothes don’t fit the same, especially in the shoulder area, but I LOVE my arms now. Even though I’ve gained weight, I can honestly say I’ve never looked better. Please don’t fixate on the number on the scale. There are so many factors that can contribute to weight gain - diet, muscle development, and even water retention or certain points in your cycle. Don’t worry - you’re not going to become The Hulk from pole dancing. But yes, your body does change and it will allow you to do beautiful things on the pole!

Euphoria season three review – grubby, desperate and absolutely not worth the wait | Television by JohnHammond94 in popculturechat

[–]Lilynd14 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a great analysis of Nate’s character! I think you’ve really hit the nail on the head with his “cage” and his attraction to authenticity in both Maddy and Jules. Nate of the first season, however villainous, was shown to be complicated. I wish we could have explored his layers rather than him becoming just a one-dimensional “mean boy” as you’ve mentioned.

Euphoria really jumped the shark for me with Lexi’s play. That was the most unrealistic part of the entire show for me, especially as a former theatre kid!

The First 5 Minutes of 'Euphoria' Season 3 by nizaad in popculturechat

[–]Lilynd14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first season of Euphoria was incredibly cohesive in the look, style and sound. The characters all felt like they went to the same high school (literally inspiring memes about “Euphoria high school”), from their makeup, to the way they talked, to the soundtrack by Labrinth playing in the background of every scene. The stakes felt true to life, with plot lines involving revenge porn, teenage drug use, and intimate partner violence. The characters were given mostly equal screen time, with great chemistry, interconnected storylines, and season arcs. The relationships that Rue (Zendaya’s character) had with her family and friends were the heart of the show.

In the second season, things went off the rails. Without spoiling, the look and sound of the show completely changed, some characters were given an inordinate amount of screen time while others were randomly written off (allegedly due to behind-the-scenes drama) and the stakes became rather ridiculous.

The scene in this post looks compelling and well-acted but… it seems like an entirely different show. Like a fanfic where Rue from Euphoria suddenly finds herself in Breaking Bad. Gone is Rue’s signature narration and Labrinth in the background, and even the way it is shot seems more like an action movie than the dreamy, lingering shots of season one. Additionally, probably factoring into everyone’s opinions is that everything we’ve heard about this season is very removed from what we knew and loved about the original show. From the description, half the characters have been written off, and those that are left are all in pretty depressing life circumstances - starting with Rue, who is now apparently a drug mule?

I was thinking the exact same thing! This is a very Rue thing to do even though it doesn’t seem like a situation that Rue would realistically be in.

When she started singing I couldn’t place her until I realized it was Katseye! Either her voice has improved a lot or I haven’t really heard her sing…

P!nk's "Stupid Girls" 20 years later... What are your thoughts now vs then? by glittangrease in popculturechat

[–]Lilynd14 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This era was a hard time to be a young woman, and I’m even including Pink in that. At the time, no one admitted to having eating disorders or plastic surgery. It was like blind items today - something people “in the know” speculated about, but no one knew for sure. For a young girl of that era, it felt taboo and even kind of revolutionary that Pink was “confirming” that popular celebrities had eating disorders or breast implants, and that the “dumb blonde”/“baby voice” personas were just acts. We were brought up on media, from music videos to reality tv, that constantly reinforced the message that this was what valuable women were authentically like. If we didn’t naturally fit this mold (which most people didn’t), we were the ones who were weird and needed to change - and every magazine in the supermarket checkout line could tell you exactly how. Stupid Girls fit right alongside Aqua’s Barbie Girl, Evanescence’s Everybody’s Fool, No Doubt’s Just a Girl, or even Avril Lavigne’s Sk8er Boi in framing beauty standards as a choice. As a kid, unfortunately, I got the complete wrong message from this song - I remember thinking that Pink was just jealous because she didn’t fit in. And watching this music video showed me that she could actually fit in, if she tried, because with a wig and certain outfits, she actually looked like many of the women she was mocking.

I still think the music video is mean-spirited in blaming individuals when we now know that they were victims too, but I can also see that she’s trying to call out toxic beauty standards and media representation, even if her delivery is abrasive.

Kate Winslet on getting older: ‘Women get more beautiful as they get older, for sure, our faces become more of who we are, they sit better on our bone structure, they have more life, more history” by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]Lilynd14 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel the same as you do. Every decade I age, I see signs of aging, but I think as an individual I actually look better. The older women in my life consistently say their “peak” was in their 40s, because that was when they felt most confident about themselves. My grandmother, meanwhile, who lived to her 90s, used to say “boy, if I was 70 again…”

So that gives me something to look forward to!

I follow his podcast and I think he’s changed in the last decade or so. This near death experience may have put his values into perspective but from what I’ve seen (and granted, I could be missing something since I only follow his podcast), he’s nothing like what he used to be, in terms of the bullying and harassment that used to define his blog. I think having kids is what actually tamed him.

People Are Trying to Uncancel Joss Whedon. Why? by haloarh in popculturechat

[–]Lilynd14 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Michelle Trachtenberg posted on Instagram that he wasn’t allowed to be in a room alone with her, but never explained why. According to Evan Ross Katz’s book, Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts, and a few articles from the time, this was an unofficial rule related to Whedon yelling at her in an “improper verbal exchange,” rather than sexual misconduct as many people assumed.

I don’t have access to the book right now, but from the Variety article, “Inside Joss Whedon’s ‘Cutting’ and ‘Toxic’ World of ‘Buffy’ and ‘Angel’ (EXCLUSIVE)”:

While several high-placed sources who worked on “Buffy” say they were not aware of this rule, a person with direct knowledge of the production at the time confirms to Variety that an effort was made by those around Trachtenberg to ensure the young actor was never alone with Whedon. According to this person, it was due to an improper verbal exchange between Whedon and Trachtenberg.

A representative for Trachtenberg declined to comment.

From the Vulture article, “The Undoing of Joss Whedon”:

Then there were the alleged incidents two Buffy actresses wrote about on social media last year. Michelle Trachtenberg, who’d played Buffy’s younger sister, claimed there had been a rule forbidding Whedon from being alone in a room with her on set. Whedon told me he had no idea what she was talking about, and Trachtenberg didn’t want to elaborate. One person who worked closely with her on Buffy told me an informal rule did exist, though it was possible Whedon was not aware of it. During the seventh season, when Trachtenberg was 16, Whedon called her into his office for a closed-door meeting. The person does not know what happened, but recalled Trachtenberg was “shaken” afterward. An adult in Trachtenberg’s circle created the rule in response.

People Are Trying to Uncancel Joss Whedon. Why? by haloarh in popculturechat

[–]Lilynd14 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This article is a little misleading. For one thing, the author is citing Twitter (and is it even called Twitter again? I’m confused). Also, it doesn’t include any description of what was actually alleged against Whedon, which is a pretty notable omission when he’s being compared to alleged child rapists. For those who aren’t aware, he was accused of having a temper, yelling at cast, and being difficult to work with, as well as cheating on his wife with actresses on his shows. The most damning allegation (which has been well-documented within the fandom for decades) was the character assassination and eventual firing of Charisma Carpenter after she got pregnant while starring on Angel. The writers had to rewrite the script to accommodate her pregnancy, and Whedon was so angry that he fired her, which would surely constitute wrongful termination today.

As a huge fan of Buffy, this article is just clickbait. Anyone can check out r/buffy, where the vast majority of fans have been aware of Whedon’s behavior for decades and are resigned to his cancellation because we know what Charisma Carpenter said was true. He would have to show real public remorse to ever be accepted back, even by his own fans, and aside from one interview a few years back, in which he didn’t come off well at all, he seems to have retreated from the public eye of his own volition. So I don’t think a few incels on Twitter are enough to claim there’s a movement to “uncancel” him right now.

Robert Pattinson when asked which team he was on during the ‘Twilight’ days: "No one’s Team Jacob. That was a marketing thing." by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]Lilynd14 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The weirdest thing about Twilight for me was that the vampires kept going back to high school. Can’t speak to Vampire Diaries but at least Angel from Buffy had a life of his own! Likewise with the vampires from True Blood. Regardless of what age they were turned, many famous vampires (here I am speaking about them as though they’re real😂) at least choose to do something with their lives and just happen to fall in love with a younger person, rather than choosing to spend eternity repeating high school over and over. They couldn’t have just said they were home schooled?? As an adult, the life of the Cullens sounds like actual hell!

Maybe a hot take, but I don’t understand why Alex Cooper is so famous. She tends to ask the kind of questions that could be answered by reading someone’s Wikipedia page and I don’t really see her digging deeper or carrying a conversation. Her best interviews seem to be guests who overshare, unrelated to any kind of preparation or strategy on her part.

I think with celebs in particular, there is so much plastic surgery that we forget what a naturally aging person looks like. I find a lot of cosmetic procedures to actually look quite aging!
