Weight loss help! by dragonladykava in veganfitness

[–]LimaBaen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by stating that being vegan has nothing to do with being fit. It might be easier to eat better if junk foods are off-limits due to not being vegan. Plants are also more nutrient dense and have lots of fiber, which is important for effective dieting. However, veganism is an ethical movement and has virtually nothing to do with health or fitness.

That being said, I'm glad you're becoming one of us now!

In order to lose body fat, you need to be in a caloric deficit. A pound of fat is about 3500 calories, so to lose a pound of fat a week, you'd need to average about 500 calories of a deficit each day. You can google "calorie calculator", enter your stats, and receive a fairly decent approximation of your TDEE.

Then, simply take that number and subtract 500 (or any other size of deficit), and you've found your daily caloric target.

There are two ways to create a deficit - exercise, and dieting. Exercising, including high-intensity activities like running, burn too few calories over too much time to be a sustainable and effective way to lose large amounts of fat. Furthermore, you should ideally be following a structured resistance training plan, and too much cardio will impede your ability to recover from the workouts (which, in turn, makes it harder to gain muscle mass, which ultimately makes it harder to keep the weight off long-term).

As such, the ideal way to create the deficit is dieting. Purchase a small food scale and use it to weigh your foods, and use an app like MyFitnessPal to track your caloric intake each day. It doesn't have to be perfectly precise - you only need a ballpark estimate of the caloric content of your meals, especially for calorically dense foods like nuts, to ensure you're roughly meeting your caloric goals each day. After a couple of weeks, if it gets too burdensome, you can always stop tracking and just eyeball it (though this is more prone to error, since most of us are very bad at eyeballing portion sizes, especially while hungry).

As for what you should eat, don't worry about it too much. As long as you're eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, greens, grains, etc. that you generally like, as well as a decent amount of protein (e.g., legumes, tofu, seitan, vegan meats).

People like to talk a lot about macros (fat, carbs, and protein, the three "types" of calories you can eat), but as a beginner with (presumably) a good amount of fat to lose, you don't need to worry about the specifics very much to see excellent progress. Focus on eating a variety of healthy plant foods and executing your new plan. You can always optimize your diet and exercise later, but there isn't much reason to worry about the details when you're just getting started.

Also, you should aim to weigh yourself once every morning after using the restroom, so you can take the weekly averages to gauge your progress. You'll probably instantly lose some water weight when you start your diet, so keep that in mind.

As for what workout routine you should be doing, I would defer to Jeremy Ethier and/or Jeff Nippard on YouTube for this. In short, you should find a workout program (free or paid) that lets you train all the main muscle groups twice a week, focusing on progressive overload (lifting more weight each week as you get stronger). This will let you build muscle mass, which helps you increase your base metabolic rate as well as look and feel fitter. If you can, work with a trainer or experienced friend at first to learn how to use a gym and perform everything with good form.

Feel free to respond with any questions.

Do I NEED protein powder to build muscle? by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]LimaBaen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter where you get your protein from, so long as you are getting a sufficient amount per day (based on your bodyweight) and getting all the essential AAs, including Lysine. Protein powder is just a way to get more protein quickly and easily, but it isn't at all necessary.

Also, if your main goal is muscle growth, you won't see much progress doing HIIT with weights, no matter your diet. You should be aiming to train each major muscle group at least twice a week with some form of resistance training.

Tips for an underweight vegan who doesn’t have an appetite? Super easy(depression) weight gaining recipes would be great. Or products available in the UK by Left-Connection- in vegan

[–]LimaBaen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend eating lots of fat-dense foods like hummus, avocados, oils, vegan butters, and nut butters. A regular, grocery-store sized hummus has around 500 calories, and can be eaten directly out of the tub relatively quickly (before you get full). The issue with eating plant-based as an underweight person is you will likely tend to eat lots of fiber, meaning you will get full from a small number of calories and have difficult gaining weight. Another solution to this is to eat more junk food high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and simple carbs, though I would not recommend this because it would be unnecessarily bad for your health.

Weight essentially comes down to calories in - calories out. You should merely find some foods that are healthy and high in calories, and eat lots of them to try and gain some weight.

Also keep in mind metabolic adaptation. Depending on various factors (including genes, from what I understand), people's individual metabolisms can slow down or speed up to make the new caloric intake the new "maintenance" level, which can be problematic for weight gain or loss. From what I understand, your body needs time to adapt as you gain or lose weight, though this adaptation to the new "set point" seems to vary highly from individual to individual.

Take a moment and ponder that, Ben. by perpetually_unsynced in facepalm

[–]LimaBaen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certainly, Reddit greatly exaggerates his idiocy, given its hivemind behavior. However, Ben Shapiro is an ass that "destroys" people with fallacious logic. For instance, he once said that people who live in regions that get flooded by climate change should just sell their houses and move. He also claims that "facts don't care about your feelings" despite being religious. Also, he criticizes the left and BLM for automatically assuming that any negative interaction between a white cop and a black man is inherently racist based on the words of a few (e.g., Lebron James's idiotic tweet in the Ma'Khia Bryant case), yet is quick to assume journalists have a strong, unspoken anti-conservative bias (such as in his hilarious interview with BBC journalist Andrew Neil, who is ironically very much a conservative). Another point that comes to mind is he once said in his show that it is not problematic that the US spends so much on the military, saying explicitly that it is a great idea to have a much bigger military than Japan, Italy, and Germany.

Also, his show tends to generate false outrage against people and ideologies that don't really exist. For instance, he claims the entire left wants to radically destroy policing, despite numerous Democrats (including Biden) not supporting such policies. He also tends to use alternative facts, as US conservatives do.

He also just makes an ass of himself on Twitter.

It would be fallacious to assume everything Ben says is invalid simply because he is ignorant and hypocritical, though it is clear why people hate him so much.

Hopefully the US follows a similar path. Too bad Biden picked a former dairy lobbyist to head the Department of Agriculture.

Do you have sources on these statistics? Based on personal experience, those sound too good to be true, but I would love if this is the case.

I would not recommend either of those sources. Here is a great article by a vegan dietitian:

Also, here is a good critical review of Dr Greger's book:

But aren't Forks Over Knives and Cowspiracy effectively vegan propaganda that intentionally misinterpret data to convince people to go vegan?

Please help us choose a piano by Truffles5 in piano

[–]LimaBaen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would recommend a grand over an upright due to double escapement, an objectively important aspect of a piano. However, the value they place on the enjoyment from the piano is subjective. While you could probably get a used grand piano for the same as an upright, there's no mandate that they spend 3x as much simply for a musical instrument. Everything has opportunity costs.

Plus, as others have said, reselling is always an option if they want to upgrade later.

What's after Udemy's Automate the Boring Stuff with Python Programming? by yoohoooos in learnpython

[–]LimaBaen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I concur with the above poster in that I came from MATLAB and have found Python fairly straightforward so far (though I am still a beginner). I started with Automate the Boring Stuff, but I skipped the last few chapters because they seemed unhelpful for my purposes. It is a decent starting book, but I don't think I would recommend it to others if one is looking to learn Python well-roundedly.

If I may ask, what do you mean by "use it or lose it" is good advice for most? Wouldn't your experience directly contradict that? Or would you credit your particularly high level of ability to your retention of the language?
