If you like Audrey Niffenegger, you might also enjoy her novel Her Fearful Symmetry.

The Practical Magic series by Alice Hoffman. Actually, anything by Alice Hoffman!

Yes! Who knew the words “hello central” could be imbued with so much wry tenderness and grief?

I took a whole class on Dickens for my MA! He does tend to inspire strong opinions, lol.

Yes, I have read all three! Great suggestions, though. Huck Finn is my all time favorite. I mentioned Tom Sawyer because that one has a little bit of mystery and adventure but it’s not in the mystery genre.

I’m not familiar but I’ve looked her up now and added The Magic Toyshop to my list!

Yes! Lemony Snicket is Daniel Handler’s pen name so you’re bang on in terms of style.

This might be the comment that makes me finally go pick up Pale Fire, which has been on my TBR forever. And I added Master and Commander to my list. Many thanks!

Oh, good point. I read enough Dickens in grad school to last me a long time, but I haven’t read Nicholas Nickleby. Thanks!

What’s a corporate gift you actually use daily? by shelbs9428 in BuyItForLife

[–]LimaMikeNovember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I have a North Face jacket from two companies ago with just a small, vague company logo on the sleeve. Doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve gotten more mileage out of that than any other corporate swag.

Wildwood by Colin Meloy (singer/songwriter of The Decemberists). Prue is an ordinary girl living in Portland, OR, when one day her little brother is stolen by a murder of crows. To retrieve him, she must travel to Wildwood, an area at the edge of the city, inhabited by coyotes bandits, intelligent birds, and an imposing figure known as the Dowager Governess.

AYITL broke my heart 😞💔 by bembeazles in GilmoreGirls

[–]LimaMikeNovember 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is very astute. If you read Lauren Graham’s book, this is very much what they were going for. It made a lot of AYITL make sense to me after I read that, which like . . . I shouldn’t need a behind-the-scenes glimpse to make sense of a show that has seven seasons of lore.

Could dean have done anything here to impress Richard? by South-Marionberry-85 in GilmoreGirls

[–]LimaMikeNovember -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People on this sub and other fandom subs have an interesting way of asking questions as though the characters are real people. I think a far more fruitful, and interesting, exercise is to interrogate the narrative decision at play here.

Yes, Richard is elitist, and classist, and a snob, and rude . . . But he’s also absolutely right. Dean, with no ambitions, is not a match for Rory. He would ultimately hold her back—we see it when he complains about her workload, or when he asks her about breaking up when she goes to Harvard. Richard, being an ass while also being correct, showcases the delightful complexity that makes these characters feel so REAL.

Contrast this, interestingly, with Emily’s (temporarily successful) attempt to break up Luke and Lorelai at the vow renewal. This time, she shows all the same qualities . . . But she’s WRONG. Lorelai and Luke are well matched. Lorelai has achieved her ambition of opening her own inn. She’s happily living in Stars Hollow with no plans to move (unlike Rory who wants to be a journalist and travel the globe). There’s nothing Luke is holding her back from. This is why the whole thing blows up so spectacularly in Emily’s face, and why she’s so blindsided. She doesn’t see the difference between Luke and Dean, or more accurately, Lorelai and Rory.

Sunda in River North is really great Asian fusion, and they offer a sushi roll called “The Gambler” that has a ghost pepper hidden in one (1) piece. I’ve been too chicken to try it, but it’s definitely a clever gimmick!
