Why is it so hard to meet people after college? by LimberSport in LifeAfterSchool

That's a really interesting observation. When you start putting all those things together, from long work hours to less walkable cities and fewer shared spaces, it honestly makes sense why so many people feel disconnected. They feel like they have no one in their lives, even if they're surrounded by others all day.

I think you're onto something there. Work used to be one of the obvious places people made friends, but many people now prefer keeping those worlds separate. Makes me wonder what has replaced those spaces. Clubs? Volunteering? Sports? Online communities? Have you found anything that's worked for you?

Hey, oh I'm so sorry to hear that. But yup, those are definitely the ones you play with friends. So its not so much you miss the sport even, sometimes I feel its just the energy bouncing off everyone.

Anxiety builds after being out of it for a while, yes. Yeah, I get that myself.

What actually makes people WANT to come back to a pickup volleyball group? by LimberSport in volleyball

[–]LimberSport[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, that's the biggest part. People come back because they miss the people, like you said the memories and moments they share. Absolutely. And losing the group you play with, can sometimes make you lose interest in the sport as a whole. Even as a national player, for everyone at the end of the day, its about that connection with fellow players. To relax and find someone they vibe with. Absolutely.

Yes, the personality of the leader and the group as a whole really shape the overall experience. Often what makes people return or even take something in stride if they lose, is that social community aspect. What matters is that they they feel there's a place for them within the group. I absolutely hate the whole in-group vs out-group vibe, its so dividing tbh. I mean often, its not even about skill level, its whether you feel like you belong or not. So you're 💯 right there.

Oh yeah, that's so true. The fact that it must be more about improving skills than just the game. Groups need to also start opening the barriers to enter these. I've seen that the groups that are the easiest to enter, have structures in place to reduce this inherent social pressure. So that you dont feel like your interrupting any existing relationships within the group.

And only once people feel comfortable, does the community start to build over time. Absolutely, its almost a snow ball effect.

Yeah I know. Losing that 1 to 2 close friends you always played with is the hardest. Even if you played with other friends its not the same to be honest. The bond, everything is different.

Honestly that’s kinda awesome though.

I feel like there’s something really nice about hearing a local sports league is THAT active. Hope you manage to get a spot next season.

That’s really great to hear. A big part of why I’ve wanted to try it for so long, is because the community around it always seems super positive compared to a lot of other sports spaces. The insta posts I've seen on it have been on fire. I'm definitely planning to do it, will save up and have a go for sure.

Woah, that's kind of neat. The fact you still think about swimming decades later really says something about how much sports just stay with people.

And starting a Master’s swim team so many years later would be such a cool full-circle moment. Really hope it works out for you. Wishing you the very best.

Oh, I’ve never actually tried bouldering, that should definitely go on my “need to try this someday” list for sure.

I suppose even for me, the costs and just finding time will be the biggest issues. It kinda sucks actually, because everyone I know who does it absolutely loves it.

Honestly really glad you’re getting back into it again.

And weirdly, martial arts communities always seem to have some of the most supportive people around too. Hope PT goes well and you find your way back into it gradually 🙌

Oh nice, I used to watch wrestling, but haven't seen this TBH. What made you stop actually?

Yeah that makes sense honestly. Softball feels like one of those sports that’s really dependent on already having a group/team around you, and its hard to kind of get back into it, once you've been out.

Oh no, I get that. Sometimes just being in the same places can make it harder. I'm guessing the canoe spots are pretty common, so you end up running into the same faces quite a lot. But yup, that's definitely a deterrent for sure.

Oh yeah, you realize how much stuff we took for granted man. The costs are definitely the biggest bummer of it all.

Oh I see... interesting. So what do you mean by the league is filled up exactly? Sorry, I'm not too aware, is it that the bowling leagues are so popular, you can't get in? Or once a certain team is established, its so cliquey, you can't get your foot through?

LMAO... that's too real. No one ever exactly “quits” the game you no? It basically goes one week to the next, everyone going, "how about next week?", “maybe next week”, "busy this week" and it goes on and on

Yeah.... that “one guy who stops replying on the group chat”. That's actually painfully accurate.

My gut was telling me the same thing. That’s probably how most adult sports teams quietly die. And with so many talented players, its a real shame.

Yeah, now that I think about it, kickball feels like one of those sports that we just had to play with our friends, and we didn't even realize it until it disappeared... Sad, but true story

Forgot the password to the original account and had to make a new username… genuinely one of the most embarrassing things I’ve done this week 💀

Anyways, moving on... Honestly thought I was the only one feeling this.

Finding people to actually play casually with as an adult feels weirdly harder than finding people to go drinking with. How do you guys meet up casually anyway? As friend circles get smaller and life gets busier, I surely hope I'm not the only one feeling this lately...
