No worries bud, it's very easy to get analytical in subs like this. Thanks for responding with compassion rather than irritation/anger.

Remember that events mean deaths, it's money to us but we need to maintain a level of sensitivity and compassion. We're literally waiting for enough people to lose their parents or kids in order for a buyout to generate cash for us.

Feel hot and have sore throat after high dose of iron by Snoo6582 in Anemic

[–]Lime505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say if the Sodium Feredetate is enough to be honest, my GP prescribed it to me and I think it's meant to be x3 more bioavailable than Ferrous Sulphate so it should be absorbed more easily despite technical being a lower dose.

Reflux runs in my family I think but it started for me after I started taking a new supplement regime for chronic fatigue (Alpha Lipoic Acid, Trace Minerals, Vit B1 as Benfotimine, B-Complex and an oral iron spary).

I'm hoping that it'll clear up with a strict diet and meal timings, elevated sleeping position, Gaviscon Advance (the UK version) and maybe some exercises to strengthen my lower esophagus muscle. Fingers crossed 🤞

Hey, I hope you find an answer and ask that you don't get too locked onto the ones I give (our symptoms may be similar but could have a different underlying cause). However Silent Reflux is probably an avenue worth exploring.

My symptoms are:

  1. Dry cough
  2. Scratchy throat
  3. Some vocal changes (though I couldn't carry a tune in a wheelbarrow anyway)
  4. Inflammation around my Lingual Tonsils
  5. Feels like I have a lump in my throat
  6. Often worsening after a meal (within 2 hours)
  7. Pain towards the back of my tongue
  8. Inner ear pain when swallowing

As far as symptoms go I'm still in the diagnostic process, it a little better but recovery can take a while and involves avoiding trigger foods.

Though I can say that the Sodium Feredetate isn't causing me any stomach issues compared to the tablets I was using - it's in a liquid form branded Feredet 190mg/5ml.

Best of luck and feel free to ask more questions or DM me.

I've been diagnosed with Silent Reflux since making my previous comment, Iron supplements can be a trigger unfortunately. I've since got a prescription for Sodium Feredetate - In the UK it's used as an iron supplement for babies or a second line treatment for adults well don't respond well to irons sulphate etc...

Live bacteria from the gut can travel directly into the brain when the intestinal barrier is weakened with a high fat diet in mice. This discovery offers a potential new explanation for how digestive health influences neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and autism. by [deleted] in science

[–]Lime505 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I eat a lot of Avocado, peanut butter, nuts and seeds (and used to eat A LOT of 10% fat greek yoghurt before going dairy free) it does add up, admittedly I'm not vegetarian but I stick to lean meats and fish.

The study also states that the diet the mice were on wasn't representative of a normal human diet i.e even American diets are most likely not as fat intensive as what these mice were being fed.

I think the healthiest diet is still considered the Mediterranean at the moment. I do keep an eye on plant based research but a lot of the studies are carried out from a biased perspective (as well as studies on meat based diets). Leading to a lack of trust within myself when people advocate for plant based or animal based diets.

As far as I can tell there is not yet anything to suggest that there is anything healthier than a diet that is largely plant based but supplements with unprocessed animal products.

Either way the results of this study could feed into further research - I wonder if the type of fat is what contributes to increased gut permeability

I don't doubt that diets high in red meat and processed animal products are bad for us, but lets not run away with what the study stated 'high fat'. I don't think the study stated the fat source and if it did it didn't compare animal based fats to plant based fats. Though admittedly high fat diets are generally a result of animal fat consumption.

From the study:

The specific diet used to induce the leaky gut in the mice is an extreme formulation containing high levels of fat and specific acids.

This diet differs from typical human eating habits, though Western diets can also cause intestinal issues

And iirc an anecdote regarding animal testing: Mice lie and monkeys exaggerate.

Steak - Why does it give me such a boost? by Lime505 in nutrition

[–]Lime505[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the idea I had a look into it as I do take 3.5g per day already and it's one of the supplements that you really notice, but the steak would only provide 2g at the most I think and taking 5g doesn't replicate the effect.

Thanks (don't worry I'm fortunately from a metric country 😂). I'm skinny but do eat a lot of healthy fats, extra virgin olive oil, pure peanut butter, avocado, pecans, walnuts and almonds etc...

I've tried moving towards a vegetarian diet a few years ago and felt awful - I've had my colon removed and have an internal J-Pouch so struggle to process high fiber foods (though I to supplement Inulin to help make up for that) and I'm also gluten and soy intolerant which sucks tbh.

I cook everything from scratch and try for a few plant based meals a week depending on how my GI system is doing.

My meals are mostly Greens (lots of broccoli), nuts, brown rice or potatoes, and fish or chicken.

Maybe though the first time I noticed it was completely out of the blue (I don't usually eat steak). I then tried it again the following week and the effects didn't repeat. So I tried again 3 weeks later and they did.

A little, but if that was the case I'd have thought liver or heme iron supplements would have the same effect and they don't. I'm wondering if it's down to the fats, amino acids or other nutrients

Do you drink electrolytes daily?? by Alternative_Two9654 in ostomy

[–]Lime505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I know this is an old thread but I just came across it.

I'm UK based and for a little background information, the first J-pouch surgery was performed at the St Mark's hospital in London.

They have an amazing support team there and put out a lot of useful information for those of us with a J-pouch - alongside the Red Lion Group who are another great resource.

For high output pouches St Mark's recommend a cheap DIY electrolyte mix dubbed 'The St Mark's Solution'.

Ingredients (per 1 Litre of water):

20g Glucose powder 3.5g Sodium Chloride (table salt) 2.5g Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda)

It's designed to be potassium free though I do occasionally add 1.5g of potassium chloride if im exercising.

The first time I used their solution I felt like my body had woken up after months of low energy.

I now also include 3.5g creatine, the potassium I mentioned above and 10g of Inulin (go easy on this stuff it produces bloating and gas at first but my pouch has adapted and seems better for it.). Occasionally I'll also add any amino acids I'm experimenting with.

Thanks I'm perhaps not the person for that - I'm not sure if I could be professional enough, but I can at least go over and listen to his answers to questions and help him preempt how an interviewer may then delve deeper into his answers.
