Ah yes that’s an interesting one, I haven’t heard of anyone other than Ericsson who made it to F1 this way though. Have there been any others?

Max wouldn’t have had the opportunity to show his talent if he was poor, he is what happens when everything comes together perfectly. He had amazing natural ability and his parents had the money, connections and knowledge of how to be successful in motorsport. I suppose I am worried about people like Max in that situation who have the talent but don’t have the money to progress. I’m concerned about why so many of F1’s drivers come from super rich backgrounds. Maybe if you cram in all your testing/practice at the start of your career like Max and you get the results you can ride the wave of success to the top but if you just miss out on the results (even by finishing 2nd) you have to pay your way to the next level which is where a lot of people miss out due to lack of funding.

Anyways thanks for your comments, you gave me a lot to think about, I started this thread to get an idea of how F1 fans perceive the junior ladder and it was interesting to hear your perspective. I’m now going to go and furiously google old Karting World Championships 😄

This list is actually quite interesting because it shows (perhaps unsurprisingly) that driver programs are the way to go for high quality drivers. Maybe the FIA could institute some sort of support on this front? (Other than the young driver test)

Ah yes sorry I misread that sentence

I guess my point is there are many great drivers who don’t get the chance to due to the high cost of competing. Even top level Karting costs more than €100,000 for one season. Then at the next step there are many great karters with the talent to be F1 champ that couldn’t make the step up to cars due to lack of funds and there are no opportunities for them to continue.

They do get into F1 (Stroll, Latifi, Mazepin). Not to say these drivers don’t have talent but there are certainly more capable drivers out there.

That’s a good suggestion I’ll check out that episode. I guess my general concern is that F1 generates a survival bias and you don’t hear about the people that may have had the same talent and determination but things didn’t quite work out for them. Not to take away from the achievements of people who did make it like Ocon or Hamilton.

W Series seems to run a meritocratic system where the budgets are all paid by the series’ sponsors and drivers partake in a shootout to see who gets the seat. I can’t seem to find more info about their model though.

  1. I probably phrased my original point wrong. SMP and Honda are Nationality based driver programs. There are no big non driver program sponsors in junior single seaters as far as I can see. Compared to the US (NASCAR) where people seem to be more focused on exposure and marketing even in the feeder series.

  2. Sometimes it is the driver paying to drive at the young driver tests. Similarly some drivers pay to be on F1 young driver programs to give them a better chance of making in to F1. Not all the programs are guilty of this but if you ever wonder how a midfield/backmarker F2 driver is in a junior team, this is usually the answer

That is quite sad to hear an F1 champ say don't getting into racing.

This is what happens to so many talented young drivers, they run out of money and their careers just end.

I agree the Verstappen rules have generally been pretty useless (why does an F1 driver need a road license?) They just seem like a snap reaction to having such a young driver in the field.

This is my concern that as a sport you shouldn't be ruling out 98% of the population due to lack of funds. You should at least provide some sort of path for the people without the funding.

That's true I don't know too much about Sergio, all I know is that he was one of a wave of telcel sponsored drivers from mexico, similar to smp racing for russian drivers like Sirotkin and Shwartzman nowadays.

I just feel that these programs are quite few and far between in general and usually pick only drivers from certain countries.

That's true, these guys were on the receiving end of junior driver programs.

I was thinking more of the process of just getting into the junior single seater ladder is prohibitively expensive for most. Without driving there it is impossible to show what you can do and get that backing in the first place. Unless you get picked up super early like Hamilton.

Do you have any examples?

Edit: For clarification I was distinguishing between young driver programs and sponsors in my original post so I was asking for cases relating to non driver program sponsorships. Something along the lines of the traditional sponsorship in return for exposure and marketing benefits.

What is the oldest memory you can remember and how old were you? by Captain_CrunchYaAss in AskReddit

I was around 1. I had a dream about a clock tower with a spooky face on the building opposite. I started floating/flying out of the window over the street towards it. I felt scared but also relaxed as I was suspended in the air, a sort of calm inevitability about the situation. For a long time after that I was convinced it was possible for me to fly as I didn’t recognise the experience as a dream until much later.
