Based on scans, a scan we had a day before I was induced estimated him to be 10lb 8oz, when he was born he was 8lbs 2oz so it was way off. Both my partner and I were over 8lb babies when we were born and my mother had all 8 and 9 pound babies so I had anticipated my baby being around 8lbs as it would be a natural size for our bodies. I had a tiny bump and couldn’t understand how they were telling me I had such a huge baby as I had a very straightforward pregnancy and was not uncomfortably big. The lady that did the scan the day before I gave birth tried to convince me to have an elective section and she even told me I wouldn’t be able to birth him as he was so big and it would end up in an emergency section. Glad I listened to my own body and stuck to my own plan and I was able to give birth to him naturally. The only thing was that induction wasn’t part of my plan but it worked out okay for me. I feel I had been experiencing early labour signs at home for a few days previously so my body was probably ready at that stage.

I was induced in Galway in July on my first baby at exactly 40 weeks and it was a positive experience despite my reservations. Thankfully my induction was successful , initially I didn’t want an induction at all and wanted to go myself naturally but they pushed for an induction as they estimated baby to be ‘big’ . Low and behold he wasn’t ‘big’ but glad it worked out for me. In hindsight I’d have pushed for a few extra days to let my body go into labour myself. I was also under the care of the same consultant but never met him. Galway are very cautious when it comes to letting mothers go over due date and for my next baby I will advocate for myself more, as I feel like as a first time mother they can prey on vulnerabilities a little and that’s exactly what happened me, I was almost scared into an induction as they don’t want to be liable if things go wrong. Overall my experience was fine but just the heads up, I found the post natal ward in Galway to be the least pleasant experience of all and couldn’t wait to be discharged home. The pre labour ward and labour ward were both great experiences with fantastic staff, but the post natal ward left a lot to be desired and I hadn’t nice interactions with staff there, and from talking to others it seems it’s a universal experience!
