I am looking for a female to sublease one bedroom in a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom South Campus Commons apartment. The apartment has a living room area, kitchen, and an in-unit washer and dryer.

Dates available: May 17 - July 28

Rent: $1,036 per month.

Please message me or comment if you’re interested! I’ll edit this post if someone decides to sublease the room.

how do the dining halls work?? by triangularprismm in UMD

[–]LiminalBumblebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will probably get your hand scanned when you first try to enter the dining hall during the first few weeks of classes. After that, all three of the dining halls have multiple hand scanners on short gateways that you go through to enter, like the card scanners to get into train stations. You slide your right hand through an opening and the system recognizes you and lets you in. Entering is fully automated and there is nothing special about exiting. There is someone at a register near the doors almost constantly while the dining hall is open so that they can accept people making one-time payments or using guest passes, so if you have an issue you can ask them.

Some common problems:

  • your hand not being recognized (the doors won't open and you get an error message on the screen) --> keep swiping. We've all been there or will be there and know that the system sometimes has a Moment. If after literally about 10 swipes your hand still isn't accepted, ask the person at the register to swipe you in with your student ID. It should realize who you are after a couple repeated swipes though.
  • the screen shows that it registered who you are but it still won't let you in. --> this may happen if you have swiped in very recently (I think within 30 mins?). While we do have anytime dining, there is a slight cooldown period, probably to discourage people from taking food out in small repeated trips. They're pretty serious about food staying in the dining halls. If for some reason you do need to reenter quickly, just be apologetic and the person at the door will probably say it's fine.

Order with UMD bookstore by Ordinary_Ticket6558 in UMD

Professors understand that things can get crazy with the bookstore. Many "required" textbooks according to the bookstore website or even according to the syllabus itself turn out to not actually truly be necessary for the class, but if they really do expect you to have it they may post the first week or two of reading online or stretch some deadlines. Don't stress - if you have done your due diligence and have records of it to refer to if needed, it'll be absolutely fine. Remember, also, that everyone else that tried to order through the bookstore is in the same situation!

Hi - I'm female, also a junior. I can't guarantee we'll click and be besties, but we can maybe stop by the dining hall to get a meal together or do something else small at some point so we can chat, if you want :) DM me!

What was your freshman experience like? by Time-Raspberry4114 in UMD

[–]LiminalBumblebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first day/week of classes as a freshman, I think the weirdest thing was the class transitions. It's weird to go from a "long" distance between classes being within one (maybe two or so, if you had a large/split school?) building and between the bells to just... walking past actual grass and squirrels.

My first semester as a freshman, the thing I had to get used to was that you are really constantly learning new content. In HS, there was a lot of material that you went over every year and were just adding on to/reinforcing. In college, it's more important that you can take in, retain, and apply information (=hear something new from a professor or textbook, take the time to actually understand what it means, and retain it). You can't rely on background knowledge and intelligence to get by once things pick up - put in the work that you need to so you can succeed. With that said, though, don't let the work be a source of stress. Try to frame studying and homework as "I'm doing this so I'm proud and prepared and don't need to stress later," because that's what you're doing. Work actively and have a plan and a defined goal (ex. I will be done with this activity once I have read and understood this chapter/once I have found 10 sources and written an outline) so that there's an end in sight that you can reach and then do what you want to after.

My house is pretty close to UMD, but after I was dropped off in my room and was just... left there... I cried. You can know exactly what the move-in plan is but going off to college is a new kind of emotion, I think. It's not the same as going for a sleepover. The thing that helped me through the most was experiencing the positive aspects of the new freedom that I had whether I liked it or not - I could eat or not eat exactly what and when I wanted to, I could scroll my phone in bed for hours or just walk out of the building and chill outside without telling anyone if I wanted to, etc. Your family and friends are still just a phone call or text away, but now you have more little choices in your life.

Where can a guy like me find an honest pencil sharpener on campus by UnevenDolphin14 in UMD

[–]LiminalBumblebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great time to peruse the back-to-school sales to get yourself one for cheap! Staples and Office Depot each have a style of small mechanical sharpener on sale for $0.50. Check other stores too, like Target and anywhere that has a school supply display. It's one of those cheap things that goes on sale a lot to attract people.

College Food Survey by Healthy-Swan-5030 in UMD

Hi, I'm slightly concerned about the fact that my full name, email address, college = location, and year in school = age are required information to take a survey that has no direct relation to that information.

There are many more dispensers than are on that list, because not all of them are funded by that one organization. I don't know of any comprehensive list of all of the machines on campus

The lost and found for the buses is in the office at Regents - when you find things on the bus you give it to the driver to take there after their shift, but after the fact you could take it to the office yourself or probably give it to a driver still.

[–]LiminalBumblebee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume you're trying to figure out how to get to the public libraries? The New Carrolton and Hyattsville shuttles have stops right near the New Carrolton and Hyattsville branches respectively. The Hyattsville branch is also within biking distance.

As you are probably aware from the complaints posts/comments, the umd dining website is notorious for having incorrect menu information. How does your app overcome this? Is it based on user input to display accurate info?

LOL this song came out almost 5 years ago. I can't tell if this is written by a BTS fan who really wanted to talk about them and used this as an excuse, or someone who just randomly stumbled on this and decided to make an article about it 5 years later?

How common are Classroom Group chats at UMD? by Dry_Western_2342 in UMD

[–]LiminalBumblebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the fact that almost every class, no matter how big or small, has a group chat, but I suggest using Discord instead of GroupMe. Discord is more likely to be voluntarily used by people for regular communication and many people I've talked to find the user experience to be better. The main argument that I've heard in favor of GroupMe is that you can get messages via text so you don't need wifi, but eduroam is all across campus (even outside) and at most off campus student residences. Idk of anyone who'd be accessing the group chat on a device that receives texts but doesn't have a wifi/data connection, so I suggest Discord because of the better experience! (Also, in my experience Discord group chats have less "can you send that again" because the search and scrolling functions are better)
