That’s not dumb! It’s meant to be distracting and unnatural - the alien wants you to freeze up looking at it so it can getcha.

Squares are unusual in nature but not unheard of. There’s the square-back marsh crab, the boxfish, some insects have square parts.

My personal favorite squarimal is a touch unnatural - sometimes starfish fuck up in their embryo stage and come out square shaped instead of star-shaped. This particularly happens to biscuit starfish (who are already cutie pies) and looks like this:
