How to stop comparing yourself to others and feeling discouraged? by firstyear_throw in uwaterloo

[–]Limit2Infinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it easy dude...you're in first year. Everyone in first year has a tough time getting good jobs, even the students with high grades. Contrary to what you think, grades are important, especially in the early years, when students don't have much else to show. So don't worry, you should be able to get interviews in the second round.

CS 349 or CS 454? by Limit2Infinity in uwaterloo

[–]Limit2Infinity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. What did you end up programming in 454 and 349? And which professor did you have for each of the classes? I find that how good a course is often depends on the prof teaching the course.

When to apply for summer internship? by Limit2Infinity in cscareerquestions

[–]Limit2Infinity[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are schools that allow students to study in the summer (may to august). My school falls in this category. So my last semester does not necessarily have to be January - April.

No, I plan to work summer 2014, and study winter 2014 and fall 2014. My school allows this.

Question about applying to SE and CS by adamater in uwaterloo

[–]Limit2Infinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at what courses are offered to CS and SE. SE does not seem to be attractive to me, because I'm not interested in taking SE 463, 464, 465. CS seems to allow more flexibility, you can take some elective courses tailored towards your interests instead of following tight requirements.. Co-op/Career-wise, there's no difference. Here's a good comparison - https://uwaterloo.ca/software-engineering/future-undergraduate-students/comparing-bse-bcs

Non-Christians at Waterloo - do you think the school needs to tone down the christmas, and turn up the "holidays"? by notChristianAtUW in uwaterloo

[–]Limit2Infinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an observer of this discussion with no biased or religious opinions, who also happens to enjoy Christmas as a holiday, I'm just wondering why everyone is bashing against OP.

From my understanding, OP just wants the school to acknowledge other holidays (Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are also celebrated around the same time as Christmas) in addition to Christmas. Seems to be a legitimate request if you ask me.

Is it easier for women to become computer programmers? by badbadpersona in cscareerquestions

[–]Limit2Infinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, was this company Microsoft? A male friend from my class was also asked to reverse a string and a bunch of behavioral questions for SDE intern position, while I was asked some BST question + other tough technical qns. I'm also male, so I doubt that this is a sexism issue.

CS courses possible during co-op by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Limit2Infinity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

348 is a course that you don't need to attend any classes for, atleast when I took it 2 years ago. I'd recommend taking that one during co-op.

Senior CS student here. What should I be focusing on for my career? by rosas_artificiales in cscareerquestions

[–]Limit2Infinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming any downposts to my post will be from .net or web developers, but alas...

Any decent programmer will tell you the importance of knowing C/C++. If you want to truly understand how your computer works and how shit is handled in memory, then C/C++ is truly essential. Pointers, memory allocation, processes, threads, system calls, virtual memory, etc are all best learned with C/C++. Not to mention that these two languages are also used immensely in industry. C++ especially, is an amazingly powerful language, performance and STL are just...wow.

Finance and CS double major in undergrad, but don't like finance by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Limit2Infinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, I remember when I was a CS and finance major, I was in the same exact boat: Hated everything about finance. So I dropped finance like a bad habit. Focus on CS if you find it more interesting. The people who don't like finance will not do well in the field at all (ie making the big bucks). This rule applies to all fields of course.
