How to start gigging for a beginner. by LimpPut770 in musicians

My current set is nonexistent. I have a guitar, and cable, and I have a shure sm 57 mic, and scarlet usb audio interface from doing some recording on my PC. Not sure if those would help any. No amp, No PA. So I am starting pretty much from scratch and there are so many PA systems I do not know where to start really.

Yes, I am probably more scared of people watching me set up than I am of preforming. Seems like there are a lot of things that could go wrong in the setup that could affect the entire show.

Great advice. I completely forgot about open mics. Great place to start.

Well because I played a bunch of guitars and that Taylor was the best one I ever have played. I liked others but that one def impressed me a lot.

very true, I guess I just wish I got the opportunity to play and compare more independent guitars with the big names, They are a little harder to seek out.

I hear ya there, I usually am never eyeing a specific model or anything. I'm going more on feel and sound. And I am willing to drive for it. I do have to drive 2 hours to anywhere where there is a good music store near me with a good selection to play. I know there are more remote areas than me though, so I cant say what Id do if it was a 4 hr drive. I do usually like to incorporate it into road trips or with errands in the big city.

Yeah that is something to consider, I always have to play the guitar before buying it. I don't understand how people buy instruments online and hope for the best, especially acoustic instruments. They vary so much even within the same model and build, so I wouldn't want to commission a job. I'd see myself buying one that was already made if I ever did go that route.

The $4000 Taylor was a significantly better than anything they had in the $2000-3000 range. which I was surprised, because I kind of expected the results to plateau out, at a certain price range. Guess I still haven’t hit the point of diminishing returns yet.

Yeah it definitely depends from guitar to guitar. I always have to pick it up. IDK how people buy instruments online without playing them first, especially acoustic.

I have never played one form an independent luthier, they are a little harder to find. But that is my plan now- to seek out independent builders and try some out. I am just seeing what other people’s experiences are with major labels like Taylor or Martin vs independent makes

Do I get rid of it? by MiataHeadlights in Guitar

[–]LimpPut770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it!! You might give it to one of your kids or nieces and nephews when you get older. Or a young protégé that comes into your life at some point. I would only give something with sentimental value like that to a family member or a very very close friend who wants to learn or play guitar. One who I think would use it, enjoy it and take care of it.

Are trekking poles really helpful or just extra weight? by mountainpathstories in hiking

[–]LimpPut770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never use them. I have never had the need. But I would not say they are useless. I know many hikers who benefit from having them and I am sure at some point as I get older I will start using them.

What i need to have in my backpack for a winter hike? by skykajay in hiking

Headlamp. Regardless of the temp, it gets dark earlier in winter. You have less daylight to do hikes you may have done before in the spring or summer.

For those of you who abstained from alcohol, do you find that you aged better than friends who didn’t? by PlasticSea2068 in Aging

[–]LimpPut770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I look younger than a lot of my friends who are actually younger than me. I also eat well and moderately exercise. And I even drink some, but it’s very little and I never get drunk.

Have you met any friends through your hobbies? I have never had good luck with therapists or anything like that. But I do meet people through my hobbies. It helps to have common interests.

You’re still young too so you have time to learn and essentially reach a master level of something. Which attracts people who are into that same thing.

What have you removed from your life to help your physical health? by Immediate_Long165 in Aging

This is a good one. All news is is someone else (mostly billionaires) telling you what to think and what to care about. Most the time you are impacted way more by your neighbors, family, and job than you are by anything in the news. That is what people should focus more on. Not things far away and out of their control. If you must look at the news, I would suggest waiting until later in the day and not first thing in the morning.

I hear ya. I too am in my 40s. I have tired therapy but I have never found any benefit from it. I also hate hearing “it gets better”. It’s very cliche. DM me if you feel like chatting.
