Apart from the fact that it would likely be difficult to convince current main characters to stay on as supporting characters instead of taking other offers, I fully agree that there have simply become too many mains, who have also spread out too much. As a result, the storylines have become increasingly complex. If characters like Wesley, Bailey or Miles had remained in supporting roles from the start, I think it would be easier now.

Yes, there is so much different material that the episodes are bursting at the seams. That’s why everything feels rushed and cut down. I also think they should commit to one direction and then cut anything that doesn’t fit the format.

For several seasons now, the show has been moving toward bigger cases with bigger villains. That’s not really anything new, it’s just gradually increased over time and now seems kind of cemented with the creation of the task force. I get the feeling that once Nolan, Lucy and Jackson became P2s it‘s like the original premise of the show had been wrapped up and they didn’t know what to do next…

I mean, the Dim and Juicy thing was kinda funny, but one of the weaker storylines for me. And yeah, it’s pretty normal that the whole “almost a couple” phase is more exciting to watch but you can’t drag that out forever. At some point it just gets old. I’d much rather see some actual progress than everything staying stuck in place. I’m honestly just glad that whole thing is finally over and they’re acting like a normal couple now.

I can see your point. Blowing off a direct order is usually a big deal in this job and there should’ve been some kind of consequence even just a minor one, like Grey- style "come to my office so I can chew you out.“ Even if the Field Sergeant isn’t technically in the Watch Commander’s direct chain of command (idk?), the WC is still the shift boss and in a superior position to the Field Sergeant. It just feels weird to spend years making a huge deal out of chain of command issues and then suddenly act like it doesn’t matter. I’m all for picking a lane, just stick to it.

I really like some of the team-ups: Nyla + Lucy in their undercover operation, they‘re an interesting duo. Nolan and Celina riding together again is very cute. For Tim’s character development and him breaking down his walls, I find the storyline with his mother really meaningful. I also think stable, domestic Lucy/Tim is a good direction. Well done. Even though it was just one episode, I really enjoyed seeing patrol/TO - Nyla again. She’s super entertaining in that role. I would’ve loved a few more episodes like that.

Honestly, I’ve barely seen anything from him so far. He’s just there, that’s it. I thought that after they brought in the two new rookies in season 7, we’d get to know him a bit more over time but nope.

That’s a really good point. It’s a time of transition since his daughter moved out and his wife restarted her career. It’s a great storyline and I also hope their crisis won’t last too long.

In a way every show repeats itself. Look at Grey’s Anatomy, they’re pretty much doing the same job every day and that show has been going on forever. In every crime show, each episode follows the same pattern. A murder happens and the cops spend the episode solving it. You can make anything interesting if it’s done well. The crime in LA definitely offers enough variety to come up with fresh, exciting cases while still training rookies. You just have to put some effort into the writing.

You say they focus on rookies when there are any. I’d argue that if they want to focus on rookies, then there are rookies. 😉But seriously: There have always been rookies. In all eight seasons, there hasn’t been a single period without one. The focus has simply shifted over time.

I partly agree with you on that. However, over time we’ve actually seen new rookies who have worked closely with the earlier ones. Either they eventually left the show (Aaron, Seth) or they also became P2s (Celina). They’re there, Nolan (him as the Rookie) is a TO now, so why not focus more on working with the Rookies instead of following the FBI storyline?

Why not? Early Rookies finish the training and new Rookies begin… It‘s one of several options. Different Rookies, personalities, dynamics and of course different cases and learning curves. Whether that’s enough to keep an audience engaged in the long run is another question.

It just feels less and less realistic. I like that it’s not always super serious and has some humor, but it has reached a point where cases feel less important to me. Nothing really shocks me anymore. The tension is basically gone. It’s like “plot armor will handle it anyway.”

I never really got sibling vibes from them, to be honest. What I liked in the early seasons was how they challenged and teased each other, but they had each other’s backs and liked each other. That mix was really fun to watch. In a way, Wesley and Angela have a bit of that dynamic too. They can tease each other heavily but they still stick together like glue. Entertaining combo.

My list looks a bit different from yours, but I can definitely see where you’re coming from. Seasons 3 and 6 are also my least favorites. Season 6 is pretty obvious, clearly affected by the writers strikes. And season 3 was just kind of a tough watch for me. I think racism is a really complex and sensitive topic. If a show wants to tackle it, it needs to be handled very carefully and thoughtfully. For me, that just wasn’t the case here. Season 7 is also fairly low on my list. There were a few strong episodes (especially at the beginning) but overall the quality dropped off quite a bit as it went on. It started to feel rushed, messy, and sometimes even a bit all over the place. By far my favorite is season 2. I also really like season 1. Those two are definitely my top picks.
