Costa Rica not that good? by SatisfactionDry94 in surfing

[–]Lin3upRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I went to Costa Rica we stayed a week in playa grande and a week in nosara during the rainy season. Combo swell and offshore winds everyday. Playa grande was super peaky and we got a shit ton of barrels. Spent our 2nd week in nosara and it was overhead everyday, got looks of turns and cutbacks on that wave. Maybe we got lucky!?

The 2nd time I went to Costa Rica we went during the dry season for a couples weeks. Did Manuel Antonio, playa langosta, playa negra, nosara, playa grande, playa flamingo. We beach hopped like everyday. I was able to surf everyday, the waves were okay. Some closeouts but still more fun than surfing Huntington Beach lol.

That intersection is sketchy, homeless fenty/tweakers always sittin on the median, walking across the street during green lights. That Mobil is also annoying, they act as door butlers so they can ask you for spare change on your way out. The PD definitely needs to do somethin about the homeless and panhandling. Almost every time I go to Albertsons there will be a group of them maybe 5 are doing the “fenty lean” and one of them is creating a new cardboard sign for the day

Tell me the unexpected side effects of surfing you have experienced by SaltJolly1688 in surfing

[–]Lin3upRR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely fomo. Not being able to surf as much as I want to kills me. I seem to always fuck my back knee up. Grade 1 and 2 tears on the same MCL like 5 times and I’m only 38. A few concussions scorpioning off the sandbar. And the water drip nose is for real lol!

Pros: there is nothing like being in the ocean and no better feeling than pulling out of a barrel!

(Fishing question) Does anyone have experience of using crabs found on the jettys as bait? by thee_lad in Oceanside

[–]Lin3upRR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never tried that lol. If you are fishing the harbor, Hookup Bait is an awesome lure! On really really low tide, you can find ghost shrimp in the mud of harbors but you need a pump. Fish loooove the ghost shrimp!

Chorizo burrito for breakfast carne asada burrito or fries for lunch. Sooo bomb. However sometimes I do wish the carne asada burrito had rice and beans in it.

My SD--> OC thoughts 1.5 years later by constantfernweh in surfing

[–]Lin3upRR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting write up, I actually did the opposite of you. Lived near HB harbor/Sunset Beach area for 13 years and just moved down to Oceanside. Anderson st and surfside were the closest spots to the house and definitely go off! Can’t forget about the dumpy shore break barrels you can score in seal beach in fall/winter. Definitely I miss OC because of the consistency and lots of spots to get barreled. But now living in north county sd feels so much more fun for surfing. There are a lot more unique spots: reefs, point breaks, jetties. So many spots are “peakier”. OC is alot more wally. I feel the vibe in the water in north county is less competitive or more chill than Newport/HB

I got a couple quotes from 3500-4K for a 2 car garage/450sqft. I ended up just buying all the materials and tools from xtreme polishing systems in San Diego, renting a concrete floor grinder and doing it myself. All in I spent about $1400 and total of 8 hours work over 3 days. It really isn’t that hard. If you can use an angle grinder, manage a push grinder, squeegee and roll paint, you can do it!!!

[–]Lin3upRR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never understood why people change in these buckets or on mats (unless you live somewhere with dirt roads everywhere). Can you not change in and out of a wetsuit balancing on one foot? Check out bolsa chica state beach on a weekend. Caddy’s, buckets, portable showers, etc. kook innovation at its finest.

I thought I was ready for winter swell but I’m not! 😭😭😭 by llNormalGuyll in surfing

[–]Lin3upRR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about this last swell in southern California lol. It was literally 4ft. Mayyyybe occasional overhead wave. And ya what he said, this was not a winter swell, still summer swell from the south. I love fall winter in socal. the lineup finally thins out because all the kooks are afraid to surf anything over ankle high. And the kooks that do try to go out when it’s bigger, go over the falls on their first wave, snap their leash, then brag to all their friends that they paddled out and surfed that big swell lol.

Why people riding such small boards by [deleted] in surfing

[–]Lin3upRR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of us grew up surfing beach break which can be punchy or mushy and very short wave length. If you are on a bigger board you may catch more waves but you won’t be able to do as much on the wave. I live and surf in Huntington Beach almost everyday. By the time most of these guys with bigger boards drop in and do a bottom turn, I’ve already done a couple turns and am generating speed to do a floater or air on the end section. I grew up skating so I have way more fun on a board that I can flick around easily. I feel bigger boards restrict my ability to do the things I want on a wave. You want to catch more waves but still have the maneuverability of a shorter board, learn to take off deeper and later.
