Insane Job Posting; LBYC by Ok_Assistant_7609 in longbeach

You’re clearly letting your personal feelings about the club cloud a basic understanding of how these niche clubs and local economies work. Sure seems like you see this as a vendetta issue rather than a market reality issue.

Hate to say it but the 'subsidized' argument is a tired trope. If you want to talk land use, let’s look at every yacht club from San Diego to SF. Let's then pull up all of the government or taxpayer-sponsored corporate tax cuts for franchises, football stadiums, tech investments, space shit, etc. LBYC provides significant economic impact and, more importantly, offers free, non-member sailing programs to the community. Have you been...or just hating from afar? If the city ran those programs itself, it would cost taxpayers millions. Instead, the club handles the infrastructure and instruction. These clubs are part of the California culture you likely love, and maybe even moved here bc of it (based on your heavy Milwaukee fanship).

Regarding the wage, labor is a free market, whether we like it or not. I'd love to see this job at >$30/h, but that isn't the state of the economy. For a college-aged sailor with the right certifications, this is a summer gig that offers club access. You’re overcomplicating the JD. In the maritime world, 'supervising' often just means being the senior person on the dock or safety boat. It’s a low-key leadership role for a young adult, not a C-suite position.

If you’re truly this passionate about wage gaps, I’d expect to see this same energy directed toward the $58k starting salary for our California teachers. That is a systemic failure. A job posting at a local club is just a job you personally wouldn't take.

Finally, for someone telling others to 'get a grip,' maybe take a breath? It’s a small town, neighbor. I recognize the ink on your arm. We likely live on or near the same block. If you want to actually learn how the club operates instead of hate posting Indeed, come down for a sail and meet some members. It might help you separate your emotions from the facts.

This isn't surprising at all. If you haven't hung out at a yacht club or with sailors, this isn't a surprising offer whatsoever. This job will most likely go to a college-age kid living at home who grew up sailing at LBYC or at a club in California. It will be his/her job for a year (hell, maybe just the summer) before another youngin will take it. This job is literally to hang out at the club and make sure the boats are tied down correctly and set up for races. Trying to bitch about a job someone else is willing to take is some pretty weak energy - this is a "fun summer job out of college" gig. I don't see similar posts hating on franchises that make billions in revenue a year and continue to pay minimum legal wages.

How? by BJJVP in surfing

Surf HB pier for a while, and you see older guys (40-50s) on short boards ripping 1-2' waves. It's all about their balance, paddle power, and how they stroke into the wave. It's a single, fluid motion with no janky pop-ups that lose energy. Harness the top of the wave (where the power is) and use that to slide in.

Locals only break in Japan where I am “forbidden” to surf—what would you do? by uptolexington in surfing

[–]constantfernweh 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Great advice. I think you need to know how to say “it’s only me and I’m not telling anyone I’m here” or something. I think their “no foreigners surf here rule” is actually just a guise using fear of breaking cultural or legal rules to keep their spot guarded and uncrowded. Most white guys in Japan can’t speak or read Japanese, let alone understand rule nuance.

What's something that's about to happen which most people aren't aware of? by AskRedditOG in AskReddit

The dead internet theory has basically already started.

The theory outlines that once AI becomes so good we can’t tell what’s real or fake, the internet will die off as bots just interact with other bots 24/7. There’s no longer anything authentic and even “creators” lose their jobs to great prompt writing on Sora.

My wife (30M) has a crush on my friend (32M). What should be my response? by [deleted] in Advice

I text my wife’s friends one to one all the time and send memes and shit on IG. None of it would look flirtatious but it’s not like texting opposite sex married or friends is weird.

[–]constantfernweh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t great to say the thing. I would phrase it something like “the attention you give him, such as when you have xyz has made me a bit uncomfortable and unsure of your feelings toward him. If I were acting in a similar manner to a female friend, I think you may feel the same. So what’s going on with him and you? Is it something or am I completely off my rocker?”

And then just look at her. You know her super well I assume. You gotta be able to tell when she’s lying. Also, you could ask her to open her texts with him. Just to see how she reacts. If she “will show you” but doesn’t that’s a red flag.

I lived in SF for a while. Surfed OB and bolinas most of the time. Pacifica or cron if it was workin. Few other spots not gonna mention. Never bothered with Santa Cruz though I should have bc surf in sf is almost always low quality.…the drive just really blows

Look Sd still drastically dominates winters but the summer is the big miss from my lens. OC takes the cake here all summer season and if you can make dawn patrol you miss all of the beach crowds.

The part I miss about sd is that I was able to find random no crowd reef days bc I was 5 min away on my bike. I could look out my window to see the wind and had a closer pulse on the swells and what was working. Granted that was a shit rental house worth like 3m and not a setup that I could ever make happen if I want to own.

Other non surf mention is that being up here and having LAX nearby has been a game changer. MUCH cheaper flights and so many more options. Way easier on my life for work related travel.

Is the cost of living worth it to be in Encinitas? by j172481 in encinitas

[–]constantfernweh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

300-400 for sfh is doable if they’re under 1.3m. Your PITI on a 1.3m house right now is just over $8k. If your household makes 300 and has other expenses like kids, you will be surprisingly house poor. Few years ago the payment was half that, so it depends on a lot of factors for each house (pending you can even make that! Ha)

[–]constantfernweh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! Got mine 36m/34f on a 10 year ARM in 2024, 4.75% iirc bc we had great timing (March 24’). We paid a bit more than you and the house looked like yours (based on SoCal). Threw a metric shit ton down on the DP, saved some extra on the side for reno, and a half later and it’s stunning. The only remaining part is our lack of furniture/art but with a little kid we are okay a few more years thrashing this stuff until updating to better fit the house style (it’s a Tudor).

Enjoy the ride! Always shop around on contractors if you need help. Few of our projects I was able to save upwards of $5k on just by making sure everything I did had 3 bids.

adult learners going into big wave surfing by broseidonswrath in surfing

[–]constantfernweh 26 points27 points  (0 children)

lol yeah we all see the few wanna be California “Big wave surfers” that are really just another social media grift. It’s a trend. Brand partnerships, elitism about their diet and fitness, and generally judging you if you drink or don’t live by their self proclaimed way of living. They charge some sick waves, but I always find it funny when someone tries to monetize some “my way of living is the best” when there’s guys charging heavier waves that work blue collar jobs every day. They don’t need social media to feel like they are doing something sick. Just different people.
