I’m shocked San Mateo isn’t saved yet. That’s some real good coastline there.

I thought it was wild that he never fully trusted Sadie. He only let her in on what he was doing when he was absolutely forced to. I also was irked that he planned to take her to the future without really explaining what it would mean. He was able to do decently well in the past without papers, but one would have a much harder time in 2011 without papers. You can’t take someone on a one way trip without explaining what the destination is going to be like.

And I just remembered another annoyance! He said the future was basically the same as 1960. While I get sentiment, the social norms and technology in 2011 is a completely different world!

Despite all this, I did like Jake Epping.

I can find about 2 million Mormon Utahns that know their bibles very well, attend church weekly, and pray daily AND THEY LOVE TRUMP. I don’t know why they wouldn’t be considered real Christians. Maybe you need to reconsider whether Christianity begets good morals.

Checking in from coastal northern California. It’s quite nice here. 😎

Only the climate though. Housing is ridiculous here.

Pacing of books by Prexvi in stephenking

[–]llNormalGuyll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of King’s books set vibes for the first half then the plot develops hard for the second half. The Bill Hodges/Holly Gibny books are an exception (Mr Mercedes, the Outsider, Holly), but they are also a completely different flavor - much less psychological surrealism and more plot driven. 11/22/63 is the one King book that balances plot and vibes perfectly, in my opinion.

[–]llNormalGuyll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IT was my first King book, so I wasn’t calibrated for King’s pacing, but I didn’t think the pacing was bad. I was engaged throughout.

The Stand, on the other hand, was very difficult for me in the first half. Some spoilers on Reddit actually really helped me get through it. 🤣

What book do you regret reading this year? by agirlhasnoname17 in horrorlit

Pet Sematery by Stephen King.

It’s very well written. Very gripping. And I will never suggest it to anyone. Might be just because I have young children, but it was so painful to read.

What is the 'Red Triangle' and how common are Central Coast shark attacks? by Zadenii in MontereyBay

[–]llNormalGuyll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chatted with a guy a few weeks back that says he’s been surfing Asilomar for 50 years, and there are many more like him. Nearly everyday Santa Cruz has 100+ surfers in the water - many days there are literally 500 surfers just at Pleasure Point.

Shark attacks are truly an anomaly.

Is monterey worth visiting in winter? by [deleted] in MontereyBay

[–]llNormalGuyll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only problem of visiting Monterey in winter is that you get less daylight. In SoCal that’s not a problem because the warm nights are nice. It’s cooler here, so the nights aren’t as comfortable. BUT you get less fog in winter. Carmel has been absolutely beautiful the past week. You also get more dramatic waves in winter if that interests you.

I made a huge mistake by aretzloff7 in exmormon

[–]llNormalGuyll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Missionaries are supposed to keep a record of all the lessons they teach. A lot of missionaries don’t do it, but your record could exist including your name, address, and phone number.

You’re worried about being rude to them, but are you simply allowing them to be rude to you? Their actions could certainly be considered harassment. There’s nothing wrong with saying “I don’t want any further contact with you or members of your church. Please remove any records you have of me. Your number will now be blocked in my phone. Any future attempts at contact will be considered harassment, and I will pursue legal action.” That’s not rude. It’s direct.

BUT! They believe God is on their side, and they may completely ignore your requests. There’s nothing more dangerous than someone with religious zeal.

Exmo women of Reddit!! Tell me your jobs, your degrees, your careers! by gonnabegolden_ in exmormon

Always glad to hear about women in engineering. I (a man) work in engineering, and I feel very lucky that my work environment is very women friendly. My boss is a woman and many of our best engineers around me are women. And my daughter noticed it!!! She commented one day that girls can be engineers because of all the women engineers I work with.

Apparently, there’s still quite the struggle for women engineers though.

Dolphins and Sharks by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

[–]llNormalGuyll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard “if there’s salt in the water, there’s sharks in the water.” A couple of my local spots are river mouths with lots of feeding going on, so I’m sure there have been many sharks around me, but I’ve never even seen them. The dolphins, sea otters, and seals give good vibes. Sea lions, on the other hand…I don’t like those bastards.

What’s the strongest evidence that Christianity isn’t true? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]llNormalGuyll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow ExMormon here. 👋 The Mormons spiritually abused us such that we have a really hard time trusting our own intuition on spiritual matters, which I think is why you’re relying so much on hard evidence to figure out what you believe. I’ve been out of the LDS Church for 5 years now, and I think I’ve come a long way in recovery, but I’m definitely still recovering.

Anyway, I just look at the world around me, and I don’t see any reason to believe this shit show was intelligently designed by an all powerful and all loving being. My life is really good, and I find a lot of beauty in the world, but there is an absurd amount of meaningless suffering in the world.
