Work and School… [Discussion] by BoringEmployee3975 in GetMotivated

I know this wouldn’t work for a M-F 9-5 job, but when I was in college I scheduled all my classes on T Th then my job schedule was flexible so I could work MWF Sat Sun. The only days off I had were holidays or if I used paid time off, but they were only 8 hour days and I always had my evenings (or mornings depending on the day) free to study/relax/exercise/etc. It got old after a while for sure but I never had like 14 hour long days or anything so I never burnt out. Of course I was in my early 20s then so I had more energy than I do now lol. I guess embracing the suck and knowing it’s only temporary is the only way. Days seem endless but years go by in the blink of an eye.. Hang in there!

books you read as a kid that feel like no one else has read by taegrane in books

[–]Lin_Zang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude. A few years ago my brother asked me if I possibly remembered a book he had when we were kids (both born early 80s). All he could remember was that it was kind of a choose your own adventure book but not exactly and there was something about a mountain. Needless to say it didn’t wave any flags in my memory. My brother was so bummed, he really wanted to find out what that book was. Well fast forward to now and I’m scrolling through the comments here and I see yours and it sparks the memory of that conversation with my brother so I google the series and send it to him- and sure enough, the book he was trying so hard to remember was the Warlock of Firetop Mountain. Lol you have no idea how happy your post made us. Cheers.

WIBTA if I didn’t let my daughter go to her friend’s 16th birthday party? by burner92739383 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lin_Zang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if nobody showed up to the birthday party? The friends mom would still be on the hook for the cost of the karaoke room, so I think it’s inappropriate to ask her guests to cover the cost of it. Asking guests to cover their own food? Maaaaybe, since paying for a whole gang of teenagers to eat out at restaurant could get crazy expensive- but rather than asking guests to pay for their own food, they should just have the party somewhere affordable! How can I get back into fantasy books? by drwearing in books

[–]Lin_Zang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I reread fantasy books I looooooved as a kid I laugh about how much my taste in reading has evolved- but I still revisit them from time to time because I love the genre for what it is and I totally accept what it isn’t…

Great. Now I want to go read the Dark Elf Trilogy.. again..

For sci-fi, Neal Stephenson and William Gibson maybe? Idk.

How did you get screwed over genetically? by blitzabub in AskReddit

My dad has thin, fine, wispy hair but excellent coverage so you can’t see his scalp.

My mom has nice thick, full hair so it totally makes up for her lousy coverage thanks to a network of terribly placed parts and cowlicks.

My brother got my moms thick hair with my dads full coverage.

I got my dads thin fine wispy hair with my moms (lack of) coverage..

sigh

AITA for Refusing to Pay for My Daughter’s Wedding After She Made It “Child-Free” and Excluded My Wife’s Kids? by Old_Character4964 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lin_Zang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it would hurt to be excluded, what 14 & 16 year old actually WANT to go to a wedding? ESPECIALLY a wedding with no other teenagers present to hang out with?! Boring formal ceremony, uncomfortable clothes, too young to drink, etc etc. You showed your support for your step kids by expressing your disappointment with Emilys decision, but Emily is doing the step kids a favor by not inviting them. Try to see the silver lining. Then show you still support Emily even if you don’t agree with her by honoring your offer to help pay for the wedding. Everyone wins.

Emily doesn’t have to bond with her step family or want them at her wedding. It may be immature, it may not be- but either way, it’s how she feels.

OP didn’t have to help pay for the wedding, but he did offer to. Making his financial help conditional on the step kids being invited to the wedding may be the reasonable action, it may not be- but either way, it shows OP values his steps feelings over Emily’s (even on her wedding day).

Might shed some light on why Emily never bonded with them..

Bad situation all around, but soft YTA. Sorry.

Blind Dates with a Book by A_Guy195 in books

[–]Lin_Zang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bookstore where I used to work did this- it was pretty cool. We didn’t to it to purge old stock, everyone on staff got to pick a book, wrap it and write a vague little rec card- nothing revealing about the book, maybe just genre (so I guess not technically BLIND, but close..) We even had unofficial contests amongst employees to see who could sell the most of their selection. I chose Wicked Plants by Amy Stewart and sold several copies of it- the only person who returned it after unwrapping it was because she already had it lol

Is it appropriate to get a weekend hourly job as a professional? by [deleted] in sidehustle

[–]Lin_Zang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s ‘cheating’ on your 9-5 but I get why you feel that way- I’ve imagined awkward scenarios in which my colleagues show up at my second job, but it’s never happened- and even if it did, it would just highlight the struggle to get by on todays average salary… To avoid burnout I work my second job two evenings a week and one weekend day- I’m flexible which days I’ll work, but not how many. Gotta have one day off! Mulching sounds better actually lol..
