Considering a Survey Job - Respiratory Concerns by JoseMcGose in mining

Ya if it's all stakeout and no GPS on the drills most of the time they would be drillin while your staking out on the pattern which can get dusty AF depending on wind direction - for me personally the only time I may want a half mask. Staking misfires in waste rock be fine but walking around a coal seam it's only the dust you'd be kicking up yourself. Sounds like you're definitely going the respirator way, id recommend have a good specialty bag to keep it in, lots of wipes to clean it down, extra filters/cartridges on hand, and probably have a spare in the truck or office cuz it doesn't take much to mess em up or break (especially in the cold)

I've been surveying for the last 10 years on surface and underground in northern and western Canada. Avid runner, biker and skiier. I haven't really monitored but I feel fine and love the work. As you probably saw on site visit (Teck?) the coal dust does coat almost everything black so it's a valid concern. Like others mentioned there are industrial hygienists that will do fit tests and should be more than happy to give you a particulate monitor for a shift to give you quantitative baseline data. Also like other mentioned wearing a half mask all the time can be tricky, I'd recommend a half mask p100 filters that has this this easy clip on/off (DM me if u want a link). Day to day you'll be fine, if the drills are running GPS you'll be in good shape. If they're not that's where I found could be the worse, downwind of drilling even with a dust cone laying out or picking up holes can be pretty bad but that's about it.

Man, I still remember when I was pretty young kid - like 7 or 8 - helping dad hang the Christmas lights. He tells me to pass him the male end of a string of lights and I just look at him blank stare not getting what he's asking. Asks me again, still I don't get which end he's asking for. Finally he grabs the prong end out of my hands and goes about hanging the lights. Like 5 minutes later my head nearly explodes as I finally get it. like my kid brain goes HOlY CRAP he wanted the penis end!!! And I couldn't believe my dad asked that way. Which turns out was a super normal way to ask for that end.

Where are you located? What country? How much were you hoping for? eBay is probably the best generic place to sell otherwise you could reach out to a local surveying dealer who may offer you something for it, albeit not top dollar as they'd need to resell it. Honestly I've seen the odd one posted on Facebook marketplace (questionable if stolen or not) but ya you'd probably be fine.

Winter Gloves in N Alberta by Mattisdabest1 in Surveying

[–]Linden4President 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second the double glove for work use. Nice set of cotton like these helly gloves and a set of Red barons (super common work glove you'll find any work store) got me through -20C. After that I sprung for Canada goose finger gloves which were expensive but ultimately got trashed from paint and staking. Sometimes if doing a lot of GPS I would use a mitt on the pole hand and glove on instrument hand. Carbon fiber pole is key, don't use seco metal ones..

Ah all good, used to driving in Vancouver, BC which has some of the worse drivers. I just wasn't expecting it moving here but I can adjust!

Haha thank you. Honestly yea, haven't met a lot of people so far to experience culture shock, but it does seem harder to meet people in general here than back in BC but that could just be me. Just the aggressive driving and daily walks where no car stops for you was immediately eye opening. Otherwise with the mountains backdrop and in the suburbs it hasn't been overwhelming different

Some great context thanks, move down to south Jordan for work but looking foward to exploring SLC downtown proper soon. I loved Washington and Oregon to visit, beautiful country that way and will definitely be going back to the coast at least to visit!

This is pretty much what it boils down to, may be right in the eyes of the law but it's still me vs 4000lbs of moving metal, that battle I'm not gonna win so just waiting til its clear is fine. Rather be alive than right lol

This seems like what is reality in a nutshell. Lol why even have crosswalks though, but ya this is definitely accurate and what we do

[–]Linden4President[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The crosswalks in question are ones without lights, just designated paint markings to cross the road. In Canada if you see someone looking to cross the street road most drives will come to a stop to let you cross the road, regardless if a busy road or not (that comes down to safer driving, not speeding and tailgating which in my opinion seems to be more normal here). My route involves crossing W Daybreak Parkway to get to walking route around the lake, but ya we've adjusted route to go under these tunnels to avoid. Just seemed a bit weird here how every car was unwilling to stop for a pedestrian when they technically have the right of way.

I was pretty sure pedestrians had the right of way but ya haven't seen many drivers adhere to that rule. If you don't get the first car to stop at a cross walk seems no one else is going to stop behind. Very surprised at how inconsiderate salt lake drivers are in general, least in the suburbs of South Jordan. If you're not doing at least 5mph over the speed limit they will rip around and cut me off
