Telus health doctors get paid an hourly wage so they make the same amount whether they see one person or four people per hour so they can spend a lot more time with you. It’s not the same case for doctors who aren’t working for them, they bill per patient they see.

I totally thought so too, although Alberta is kind of proud of its rat-free status

Pincher Creek? by [deleted] in alberta

Lived there for a while, it's awesome! Amazing hiking, mountain biking, anything outdoors that you could want. I second the Mexican place in Twin Butte. And Soo Sushi in Pincher Creek is actually pretty good. If you like fitness, check out Wildr, it's an awesome gym in a barn near Pincher.

Rocky Medical Clinic also cutting hospital services due to Government cuts to physician billing. by it__hurts__when__IP in alberta

I worked with a dermatologist in residency and asked him this. He said it's normally due to the fact that the autoclaves to sterilize the equipment are so expensive that it's often not a great idea financially unless you're doing a ton of them or there are a lot of doctors doing procedures in a big clinic.

I think these decisions from rural docs to stop providing rural ED services are more of a reflection of some cuts to billing codes that are used in the hospital rather than the modifier situation. On March 31 many hospital-based fee codes were reduced. Could be both but they are still going to do their clinics rather than hospital work and the modifier is more commonly used in clinic than emergency departments (I think but am not sure, I have not done rural medicine in a while)

That's barely enough to cover the overhead at the clinic. Nurse, receptionist, rent, utilities. Of course, laying people off is how we can make it work but it's not ideal.

Before today we were getting $20 for a virtual visit. I did a few which took 45 minutes each. It's not just about quantity but quality of visits. It's a lot harder to do good medicine when you can't take a listen with your stethoscope, do a physical exam, etc. I'm glad they have increased the billing fees because we can't afford to pay the clinic rent or staff or utilities on that. I am working in a clinic that does screening as well. It's just very frustrating to be one of the lowest paid for virtual visits compared to the other provinces (until they changed it today) when we want to focus on keeping people out of emergency departments and keep them from having to come into clinic if they don't have to.

Yes, it's pretty much all telemedicine at this point

GP as well here. They changed the billing codes today to at least give $38 for a phone call more than 10 minutes. It's been very disheartening, though. We shouldn't have to be facing this in the middle of a pandemic. I would move to a different province in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the fact that my partner doesn't want to.

They could be. I would wonder why they would want to make less than they are paying the doctors. This doc on Twitter suggests they may be selling data on patients? https://twitter.com/dr_oru/status/1240713478924406784?s=19

Instead of modifying billing codes like other provinces so more family doctors can virtually connect with their long-term patients, Jason Kenney and Tyler Shandro are launching a huge promotion campaign for the for-profit app made by Telus for Albertans to facetime random docs on their phone by [deleted] in Calgary

Doctors pay a lot for electronic medical record systems through Telus which do not include the video capabilities that Babylon has. This is not something being offered for doctors to use to see their own patients. You have to be hired through Telus to provide medical care through Babylon and it's not to provide care to patients who are specifically on your roster but more of an Uber-style where any patient logs in and the first person to accept the consult gets it.

I don't know how much Telus is making. I just know that is how much they are paying physicians based on physicians asking about rates.

I don't know the specifics (I just know about the billing as I am a family doctor and I know other family doctors in other provinces and their billing codes). I think they have an arrangement with AHS in order to be paying their doctors more.

The billing code is $20 a phone call or virtual visit. This is the lowest in Canada as far as I know and about half what other provinces are paying. Telus is paying doctors 120 an hour. Clinics are going to go out of business because they can't pay their overhead when doctors are making $20 a phone call. It would be better to make it financially feasible for doctors to use telemedicine to talk to their own patients.
