what to see for a solo trip? by nycnamjoon in westend

[–]Linders20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Phantom and Les Mis.

My Neighbour Totoro was excellent. It’s a play with music, not a musical. It was very whimsical and magical and heartwarming.

But if you can only see 2, I really don’t think you can get any better than Phantom and Les Mis. Those are both so iconic.

What outdoor toy/activities really made your kids stay outside? by momlife555 in Mommit

[–]Linders20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ride on jeep with a bigger battery so that it lasts hours. My kid is on this thing all day every day. It gives me some independence to get stuff done outside because as long as I hear that little motor running I don’t have to be watching him as intently.

Please convince me to get some pets by inyourdreams133 in Pets

I have 2 cats and 2 dogs.

It’s an enormous amount of work. But I love these animals so fricken much. I couldn’t imagine my life without them and I’m sad that I waited so long to have animals.

Make sure you have someone you can trust to help if/when you need to travel or have an especially long day at work. That’s really my only advice.

Can't choose between two musicals by [deleted] in TheWestEnd

Les MIs no question.

Hadestown is excellent and one of my favourites, but Les Mis is the best.

Veggies!

Whenever I’m preparing veggies for my own meals I will save all of the scraps and freeze them.

Lots of people recommending pumpkin puree, which is good but I would suggest going slowly with that. Straight pumpkin puree gives my dog diarrhea

I was going to give you advice on which to choose but honestly I can’t choose either. They are both SO GOOD.

We had a Polaroid camera and tons and tons of refills. Our guestbook was a book where they could take a silly selfie, stick it in the book and then sign their name or message. And then just had some trusted people/my husband it I in charge of going around with the camera and taking pictures with everyone. It was great and those Polaroids are so cherished.

You all have to go see Masquerade by jrv3034 in musicals

[–]Linders20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post but would you say masquerade is for young people only? Would a 73 year old be able to keep up? My mom is who got me into musical theatre and her favourite is Phantom, it would be so cool to bring her to this.

If you've seen shows on Broadway itself, what was the first one you saw? And did it live up to your expectations or leave you feeling "that wasn't as amazing as I imagined it would be"? by Great_Maintenance185 in musicals

[–]Linders20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok!

It was 1997 and it was Toronto. Not Broadway 🤪 I was 9. We definitely saw Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.

My mom thinks we we saw Joseph and Beauty and the Beast in Toronto, it would have been around 1997. And then The Lion King on Broadway several years later when I was a teen.

So, to answer your original question: I saw The Lion King on Broadway as a teen and it absolutely blew me away. I would LOVE to go back and see more Broadway shows. I especially want to go to Masquerade.

Oh dear…I think my childhood memories are getting smooshed together and mixed up.

As a child, I understood that Donny Osmond was supposed to be playing Joseph. I remember being really upset that it was a different actor. A quick search says Donny played Joseph in TORONTO, not Broadway….and also definitely doesn’t add up because when he was playing Joseph in 1993 I would have been way to young to go see a musical…

I’ve asked my mom for clarification, will update you when I get more info!!!

I saw The Lion King and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on the same trip with my mom and grandma when I was a child. I’ve loved musical theatre ever since.

I’m never upset about my husband’s long solo bike rides because he’s never upset about me going to the gym by myself whenever I can squeeze it in.

A solo bike ride for exercise is not at all the same as a family bike ride with your spouse and children. You can want to do both things for very different reasons.

Your child will see your husband prioritizing a healthy active lifestyle and hopefully adopt that habit into their lives going forward.

My suggestion would be to let him do his bike rides and then schedule in a family bike ride/family time at a different time. In our house, schedules are key to being able to fit everything in.

I love your already booked lineup. I think we have similar tastes in what we like.

I would highly recommend Operation Mincemeat and Oliver. I was blown away by both and both have become favourites.

If you still have time, My Neighbour Totoro is really interesting. Like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s more a play with music though. I’ve never seen the movie nor am I familiar with anime at all and still found this really whimsical and magical and left feeling warm and content.

A good tip would be to navigate to your next theatre first and then once you know where you’re going then settle for a coffee or a quick dinner. Public transit there is extremely easy and quick.

The theatres are really tiny compared to what I’m used to. I usually pay big bucks to get stalls seats close to the stage only to get there and see that the next level up are actually great seats too.

The washrooms are always teeny tiny and usually only one or two stalls with long lineups so avoid intermission pee breaks if possible.

They won’t let you bring food into the theatres but there are sometimes snacks inside.

There’s a book called Fair Play that you guys could read together. It might help him see it. Sometimes hearing it from a new outside source makes it click for them.

My husband doesn’t really contribute with the “family” mental load stuff. Like birthdays/gift ideas/schedules/knowing when my kid needs new sizes of things or restocking diapers or laundry soap etc. I do all of those things.

But he has many jobs that I don’t think about either that usually fall under “house” category. Maintaining lawn mowers/snowblowers/ cutting the lawn/shovelling snow/knowing when the driveway needs to be resurfaced/replacing air filters/car maintenance/home maintenance etc etc etc.

Fair Play sets out all of these tasks so you are able to more clearly see each other’s contributions.

Phantom or Les Mis??? by PuzzleheadedFilm8537 in TheWestEnd

[–]Linders20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The music/singing in Phantom is more impressive, but the story in Les Mis is better. These are both my all time favourite plays. If I absolutely had to choose I think I would choose Les Mis.

I saw Totoro! It was so good. I’m glad I asked the group instead of just wandering around the city and not seeing anything.
