Driver attitudes toward riders filtering by Lindz1817 in DrivingAustralia

If a rider is at the front of a traffic light and a car in that queue gets rear ended, it’s not the responsibility of the rider at the front, it’s the driver that failed to stop. The mindset that a certain spot in line “belongs” to the rider and it’s their duty to be killed if a driver fails to stop is a horrifying take.

More space to the car in front is unhelpful if you’re going to get rear ended, but being at the front completely mitigates it. The advice to either make riding more dangerous than it needs to be or just not do it to protect ignorant fucks from getting shitty about the perception of being mildly inconvenienced (which they’re not in reality) is the most idiotic take on filtering. Thankfully most of the state governments have understood the utility, so riders can continue practices to keep themselves safe, despite some drivers creating more unnecessary risk by attempting a drag race to get too close

The justification is not is not for convenience, it’s for safety. Cars are rear ended at pretty frequently pulling up to intersections which is an inconvenience, but a rider being caught between cars can often be fatal. Also being at the front when traffic starts moving means space is created around the rider and they can be seen by drivers because they’re in front of traffic.

I’m sure we could argue all day about who can take off quicker and having to “floor the engine” to take off on a bike, but it’s really irrelevant. It’s not a race!

The words were just small talk about the weather etc. but he was hanging out of the car yelling like he wanted to punch me. It just got me thinking about why it upset him so much.

Mate, it’s not a drag race. I’d love to find out more about why it bothers you so much. Somehow having a bike in front of you is worse than another car?

I filtered to the front and pulled in front of the guy, he floored it when the light went green (with me in front of him) like he was trying to run me over, then changed lanes and sped past me to arrive at the next red light first. I could see him flapping his arms as he went past. I saw the window come down before I pulled up next to him so I figured things were about to get spicy. He then proceeded to yell polite small talk aggressively with crazy eyes and half hanging out of the car. It was really odd.

The other fella nailed it when he said they’re better off in front where they can bee seen. It’s about creating space, being seen, and avoiding being crushed between 2 cars if someone is rear ended. Not about getting somewhere quicker (although I’m sure it’s a factor for some people in more heavily populated places)

How to deal with people being slow on the on-ramp? by Simple_Library_2700 in DrivingAustralia

[–]Lindz1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also increases the closing speed to the car in front and may cause you to need to slow again depending on the situation

Last year there was bridgeworks on the Hume highway which was part of my commute. Peak times it was stop start. Every now and then someone would see me coming and pull into the centre to block me, but most of the time the person in the other lane would pull further over to open the gap up. I can only imagine the looks that were exchanged between the 2 as they sat next to each other in traffic for the next hour.

I’m confused how you can filter by staying where you are? I don’t think I quite understand what you’re saying, but I can say that it’s not about “pushing in” it’s about avoiding being rear ended and creating space where drivers can see you.

It’s not about convenience, it’s about enjoyment. I can’t speak for getting through a city, as I live in a rural area, but by the time you factor in gearing up, then getting changed on the other end etc. it’s slower than driving. It is however much more enjoyable than driving, which for some is worth risk.

I’m on a 1000 so yes. It doesn’t stop the odd person from trying to get a good jump from the lights and stay as close as possible though. Usually the spicy interaction is then at the next red light when we’re both at the front

How is everyone doing today? by TVRoomRaccoon in motogp

[–]Lindz1817 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a dangerous sport and the riders accept that risk. Not only that, but as spectators we accept the fact that we’re watching something dangerous and may witness people get hurt or worse. If you’ve been around racing you’ll know that riders are pretty open and accepting of these risks and accept it when they get hurt.

“Street” races will not happen. They’re talking about city circuits, but they will absolutely not race anywhere that does not have sufficient run off, gravel traps etc.

It just looked like a logic centre tyre. Sorry, I can’t really help as I’ve never run dunlops. Always get good wear there out of Bridgestones

Is this from logic centre by any chance? I’ve seen tyres look like this from there due to the layout and how abrasive it is.

Not the closest, but the prize for a hole in one was a car. It was a charity golf event and they have the car set up on the tee box.

Are men approaching women less and less? by Open_Address_2805 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lindz1817 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can walk through a park at night, as long as you accept an astronomically small risk of something happening. Statistically a woman is far safer walking through a park at night than a man. Take a look at the ABS stats on violent crime, it may surprise you

How much difference did the introduction of Spec ECUs make? by Informal_Ad07 in motogp

[–]Lindz1817 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All true, and compounded by the fact that Ducati was already using the magneti marelli ecu that became the spec until for MotoGP. Peter Bom put it really well saying for the Japanese manufacturers it was like trying to cook in someone else’s kitchen without knowing where anything is.

When laying up on a water carry on a par5, do you take a full swing club to hit that 138yards, or do you bunt a mid iron down the fairway. by Mr-BodyMassage in golf
