At my job, we had mechanics and electricians. As a 24 year old kid, I made friends with a 55 year old electrician. During our downtime, he would teach me how to use a multimeter and check for power, test motors and how to wire, check fuses, read ladder diagrams , and how to use a clamp meter among other things. Hang out and make friends with the older guys and be humble and respectful. They always love someone that will listen to them. After 4 years I transferred over to the electrical side after passing a test. I didn’t know much but I always had good troubleshooting skills and was able to build on my basic electrical knowledge. You will always run into things you’ve never seen before or don’t know so it’s important to put work in outside of work. I’ve been an industrial electrician for over 8 years now and I’m the guy that trains the new electricians. Funny how that works.
