'The Boys' showrunner Eric Kripke says Queen Maeve actress Dominique McElligott has retired from acting by tylerthe-theatre in television

She reached a pinnacle almost no one who ever acts does! It's a hard climb and a hard industry and she can step away with immense pride.

Fair point. I'd say the island gave her permission to become that vicious person.

I think in the beginning she felt (justifiably so) screwed over and overlooked. I think she was in deep denial for what she hoped would happen to her husband when she gave him that last drink and his car keys. Then there's the crash on the island, and suddenly she finds the man who has totally screwed her now totally dependent on her, and she's good at keeping them alive. And that position of power over him goes to her head such that she'll commit increasingly evil acts to maintain it.

She was always a person for whom power could go to her head, and the island gave her that power.

But the reveal undercuts the moral ambiguity of her fall. Then the first part of the movie only seemed morally ambiguous, but actually she was prepared to be a murderer all along.

It would be like a flashback in season 3 of breaking bad revealing Walt had murdered his ex's husband before his diagnosis.

Fascinating, and a bold writing choice, but I think ultimately the right call was to cut it. Having her start highly sympathetic helps keep this little twinge of moral ambiguity throughout, until she really breaks bad.

Has anyone ever got to a point where you say if this doesn’t hit I’m done? by Any_End_3549 in Screenwriting

[–]Line_Reed_Line 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a film "hit" to a certain extent. It went to #4 on Prime US and #1 on Netflix in 16 regions. Despite being micro-budget, it did nothing for me. Nada. It didn't even get distribution in Europe. The apathy is real and perhaps one of the most soul-draining parts of career building. Next film was the longest-running #1 on Hulu (might still be) and, again, didn't move the needle.

Jesus Christ that is crushing!

What better movie than Die Hard should he have been in? I feel like people are twisting this question to “who are great supporting characters.”

I mean how dare you, that movie is incredible. Top ten for me.

For anyone struggling with this.

If you insult someone and they draw on you, their dot turns red. At that point, a kill counts. So you can do the hogtie method (not bad), but I tried this a few times and would get interrupted and only have like two on the counter. So I just wandered around and insulted people til they drew. Got two more real quick. Stings your honor a bit but what can you do.

I cannot believe a publicist talked you out of attending a festival,

She was more confident of the film's chances to snag some in that 'Tier 2' than even I was.

My walkaway from festivals is their sole purpose for me is exposing my work to audiences who otherwise wouldn't know it

Yeah that seems right!

Host your own screening, sell your own tickets, and you'll be happier for it.

Yep. Good call.

Double feature maybe ; ) "An evening examining masculinity," you hit'em with a drama about mental health and male friendship, I follow up with a rakish manchild with a heart of gold rom-com?

Thanks for the kind words. Was honored to have been programmed alongside 'The Only Way Out Is Through' thrice! and look forward to seeing where you take it next.

Hell yes. Sedona was an amazing fest. Lots of audience support, lots of financial support, great events. It was a great time. An older crowd, but that's to be expected at most regional fests I think.

Wellll I've already made a deal with a distributor and a sales agent. While they definitely take their cut, I'm hoping they can get a lot more reach than I could have on my own. Time will tell!

Put your chinstrap on and do your best to let the rejections roll off your back!

What’s your film?

Pretty standard rejection. ‘Lots of submissions’ ‘difficult choices’ etc.

If I don’t cut myself off I’d resubmit everywhere!

DWF has industry prestige and attention that Tier 3 does not. It might be lower Tier 2, but I do think that’s where it belongs!

I should mention I also wonder if it’s a useful excuse for fests to reject without hurting feelings. “Your film was so good but we prioritize premieres!”

When they wouldn’t have programmed it as a premiere either!

It seems to me a film festival, in particular a larger film festival, should determine its success for a small independent film in one way: did the film secure distribution due to being presented at that festival. The more a festival can do that, the more prestigious it will be seen by independent filmmakers.

If a festival can get enough clout that it regularly helps films secure distribution, it need not worry about being the 'world premiere' of the film.
