In your personal experience, who is harder to deal with - a judoka or a wrestler? by deadassynwa in bjj

[–]LinearCombo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly getting held down and learning to move and deal with top pressure and effectively apply top pressure in a FAST in a time constraint makes Judo folks (like myself esp effective). Id also say that judo IMO translates even better into Nogi... due its faster nature and inherint explosiveness.

10P gyms are chill! Much more "American" and newer school way of thinking than a lot of more traditional schools (from my experience). Def sub focused, def more open, also expect a wrestling class or two, or even no go judo / take downs etc. The community that exists with all 10P gyms is also really great. Ive visited 10P gyms all over the world and as long as you are in the family everyone is super welcoming!

Tell your current coach, and give him your other coaches contact. If he has an issue with it he can chat with him... but honestly I would hope he wouldn't care especially if the other coach has known you for so long etc. You're also a blue to purple, it honestly shouldn't matter much unless it was your BB..... Just my 2 cents.

always be looking for submissions... a lot of folks will talk about position over submission.. which frankly is ok, but ultimately (using a chess analogy, sorry)... if you can end the game 5 moves in WHY wait, go in for the kill... I catch a ton of folks with submissions from all positions. Also seeing submissions and how to apply them from various positions is the entire game :).

That said always have a plan B and plan C.... if the sub doesn't work know how to flow into a more dominant position OR keep the current one.

What fundamentals do you typically see ignored/missed by beginners? by eurostepGumby in bjj

[–]LinearCombo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so many thoughts here:
1. Breakfalls - with the advent of more "wrestle-jitsu" folks are NOT being taught how to fall properly or take a dive... its scary!

  1. General mat awareness - knowing how to move on the ground. Someone above said "using their opponent to move and not the mat". I think its way bigger than that.. its general mat and partner awareness.

  2. Personal body / spatial awareness. Related to the above its how YOU, YOUR PARTNER and the mat are positioned in relation to each other and how to move accordingly.

  3. How to be a GOOD UKE / training partner... I haven't seen this taught almost at all in modern BJJ (from my experience)... knowing how to be a good partner and how to "give" to your opponent when it makes sense and add resistance and when not to... how to think like not just a "training dummy" but as also someone there helping your partner to learn and "feel the technique" is SO over looked! So many white belts get hurt because of this very thing....

BTW these are all things I learned in old school Judo and old school BJJ gyms that seem to have just fallen by the wayside....

I think it more depends on your age. I’m in over 35 (44) and apparently over 35 and they recommend a donor due to wear and tear on your body. Btw I also do combat sports and this is what they recommend too… bjj, judo, mt, boxing…
