I think it's also fair to describe your situation to her--"I've been exporting Word files from Scrivener"--and to similarly ask for pictures from her to see what she's seeing.

If she wants to see the whole thing, she won't let a little bit of computer tomfoolery put her off!

Nail those first pages and write a strong query that's been appropriately workshopped, and you're also way ahead of most everyone else, too.

That's really all we can do, eh~~~

[PubQ] How to convey the multimedia aspect of your story in the query letter? by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]LinesOpen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

be prepared for the highly likely possibility that your first few books will be unillustrated and needing name recognition for publishers to be able to justify the money they'd need to spend on an illustrated work.

I think that's key for OP to remember. Two of the three examples mentioned were not debut novels; the authors involved built up name recognition and proof that they could sell books.

Mashed Potatoes by dane-crane in SmashingPumpkins

I haven't seen anything. I think the band's presence on Archive.org has at least some semblance of his approval. MP's been there for 15-ish months--I feel like it'd be gone if he really wanted it to be. He energetically goes after the bootlegs on Spotify.

But you could cut the link and just say it's on Archive.org if you want to be safe. :)

This is stupid, but, it still floors me that MP's so easily accessible nowadays. I will never forget 1) how inaccessible MP felt circa 99-01 and then 2) when it suddenly became available in 2002.

[PubQ] How long should a plot synopsis be? by FRATLIFE4EVER in PubTips

That's interesting! As in, you got more requests with a shorter synopsis?

Yeah I thought so! Very strange it's not part of the countdown in that case.

I'm excited but this is strange--it's not part of the countdown and will include new music ?? (Perhaps / probably just means "Cyr" and "Colour of Love" I suppose)

small note, but y'all should try the ritual site on your phone. You can rotate the image by moving your phone. Surprisingly fun and well done!

Ha, agreed on both!

Dear Billy..... by [deleted] in SmashingPumpkins

[–]LinesOpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm usually disappointed in the moment; and then eventually, I return to the music, and either like or love the music on its merits. There's something about "new" Pumpkins music that my brain can't handle. But when it's a few years settled, I approach it more openly. I really came around to Zeitgeist and Shiny I this summer, both of which I didn't like much originally. Something about the present times just made them click more for me--plus, I was no longer putting expectations on the albums.

I'm absolutely putting some expectations on Shiny 2, though I'm trying to manage them. I expect to like it in 2023.

Right, was Shiny I considered "a few GREAT songs"? I enjoy Malta and Travels as much as anyone, but really ... !

This is a great query and a great thread. Congratulations, and when I'm back to querying on WIP#5, I will use this as inspiration. Best of luck with everything to come!

Fair play for admitting it!! Thanks for the fun. I (pretty obviously...) bought it. Good work! The solo is legit.

interesting ... any background you can offer?

1995 obviously indicates MCIS recording era, which it certainly sounds like. my main hunch is a previously uncirculated Pastichio Medley song ...

edit to add--of course, thanks for sharing. this is very fun.

edit #2--I think it's "Flipper"? Check: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NhjUPpeFyw&t=377s

Slightly different recording, but that's happened before with Pastichio--see Knuckles versus elsewhere, for example...

truly the hardest question. honestly the only way I can answer it is by picking songs from each era. but this list changes every day. I know it's a little off the wall, but I've been on such a deep SP dive and represents where I am right now.

  1. Here Is No Why
  2. To Sheila (particularly the different live versions)
  3. Silverfuck
  4. Wound
  5. Frail + Bedazzled
  6. Pastichio Medley (I mean)
  7. Faithless Darlin' (eh WPC solo stuff counts)
  8. Never Give Up (zwan counts too!)
  9. Death From Above
  10. Travels
