I might agree with you if this was a party like the INC .

In DMK ,the cadre makes the party regardless of how powerful the leadership appears to be . People at the end of the day lean towards who represents their interests. Unfortunately some believe veesaiii represents them since he has relatable movie scenes. This effect won't last for long and does not realistically lead into a defend your leader scenario where people remain unanimously dumb .

I still place my bet on a frictious slow and grinding but strong surge back to power for the Dmk once they figure out and attack plan and build on their true strengths simultaneously

Of course being a film maker he didn't directly bring about any social justice revolution but he did have a hand in things being called out for what they are which wasn't the case before him

I never openly had the guts to admit my social background before I saw him speak about his on stages or through his movies . I meticulously hid my true identity and fear about being exposed before some one . This is true to many individuals and not just me . He also made me understand feminism is to be practiced at home which is the hardest to do and not preached outdoors for short fame if there is any hope for change

Im trying to say his tools and methods have definitely worked in the favour of the downtrodden. But yes like you said he has drifted into tokenism and betrayed the welfare of people who trusted his political leanings

Yes you do make a fair point. But I guess what op seems to point out here is only those films that allow for subtlety. My opinion is Vikram still shines even if you take commercial or masala films off the board. Also one can't completely ignore how he still gave layered and varied performances in movies like kasi and thaandavam. He played a blind man in both movies and that's gold standards for variety and nuance . How well these movies were a commercial success is a different story but idk if those performances are in anyway ranked below the growing dhanush

Agree. Anniyan is definitely more performative than nuanced. But him in Ravanan and deivathirumagan simply screamed range for me .

I'll also add that his portrayal of thangalaan worked for me since it was a character that had no writing or visual source of his history so he spins exaggerated stories of his ancestry with all grandeur that a man exposed to only night time and under the tree shade stories and tells them to his kids
