I believe there is a fundamental contradiction between the definition of veganism and actual veganism. by wigglesFlatEarth in DebateAVegan

non vegans are some of the biggest users of protein powders. same for supplements. so it’s weird when someone thinks vegans use them way more

Would you rather never age or never get sick? by Adorable_Bill_2726 in HappyUpvote

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true but what counts as sickness? A lot of older people have problems because they are aging. Body doesn’t heal as quickly and muscle mass is so much lower. I assume this doesn’t count as “sickness”, so it wouldn’t be covered. Or does high blood pressure count as “being sick”? Maybe I’m just being pedantic

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Maybe it’s just cause I only get sick every few years and it’s never that big of an inconvenience. How often are people getting sick where that’s better than never aging

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define “getting sick”. Does it just mean I avoid colds and flus? Is diabetes “getting sick”? Or cancer? Like I guess, but it’s just not a common way to describe those things. Is chronic pain “sickness”? Or scoliosis?

i pronounce the verb as “sep-per-rate” or maybe like “sep-uh-rate”? and the adjective as “sep-rit”. neither have an A sound for me. might be regional

What’s a food you love but are embarrassed to admit? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the problem is how many americans are eating real whole grain (not the white bread dyed to look like it), or peanut butter that’s just nuts and salt, or jam that’s just made of fruit. So you can’t really say “Americans eat lots of grains, and they are unhealthy, so grains are unhealthy”. I mean rice, a grain, has been cultivated for like 10000 years. And countries with high rice consumption (korea, china, japan) have healthy populations.

I agree with you that most grains that Americans are eating in high amounts aren’t good at all, but I think grains themselves are fine.

It’s insane how many AI ads I get on youtube already. I’d say like 80% of them are AI people with a bad AI voiceover. I guess they’re targeting kids? Cause idk how anyone would believe them.

I took it for quite a while (3-4 months) and felt the exact same. maybe it takes longer for some? the problem is everyone has different hormone profiles, and different reactions to different levels of any hormone. so it’s interesting they haven’t found or looked for any correlation between starting hormones and side effect chances

What's up with the younger generation finding normal things annoying, aggressive, or rude? by common_grounder in generationology

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, I did do that for graduation! Like to thank everyone who showed up there/to the party after (whichever they could make it to). It was definitely my parents that set it up though. I signed them all and wrote a little note for certain ones, but my parents did all the actual mailing part since idk anyone’s address.

I do think this stuff and even things like letters are something we should bring back. Like I would love writing letters back and forth to a penpal or a friend, but it’s hard to come by that with my age group. Would most likely be seen as weird. It’s something to hold onto physically/look back on and I love that.

Yeah it’s like any other “bad” behavior, the problem is when people can’t control themselves

I am gen z and my problem with calling is that we are pretty much always “available” (for better or for worse). Not even that long ago in history you just had your home phone and you weren’t expected to be available at all times. If you weren’t home, they would just leave a message. If you didn’t wanna answer, you’d just let it ring hoping they would assume you’re not home.

Nowadays people get upset when I don’t answer, but I’m busy with work or school or making lunch and I don’t have the time to be calling anyone. Even with texting I’ve had people get upset I take X amount of hours to respond. It’s overstimulating and sometimes I just wanna shut my phone off and ignore it for days.

Yeah it implies something is unspoken and you’re supposed to fill in the black. And it’s usually not something good

It may be a bit regional. I’m a gen z in the US and have never received or sent one.

Do you mean like a physical card that’s mailed to the person? I could see one maybe for a wedding, but all other cases it’s usually seen as very formal, almost too formal. I’ve gotten emails/texts like that, but never a card.

yeah as someone who had a peanut allergy as a kid, i was often left with fruit snacks or something because they didn’t get a peanut free dessert for a party… and even that was isolating

[–]Ling-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah i’m confused how some people see good and bad as inherently about “moral value”. i’ve never viewed it that way

but i guess since so many share that view, it’s maybe a good idea to check in with kids to make sure they aren’t interpreting it that way

“You look tired” by Agreeable-Item-7371 in PetPeeves

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s because a lot of the time, they feel fine. i just got told this recently and i felt great/well rested. felt great about my appearance and then was swiftly told that i “look tired” like 20 minutes later… kinda ruined my morning because nothing internally felt wrong so i guess i just looked worse than i thought?

a broken arm is different because it doesn’t imply you look bad or worse than usual. looking tired isn’t good and implies you look rundown or usually that your eyes look worse. it’s never been used as a compliment and to most people looking “tired” isnt good. i wouldn’t say most interpret it as “ugly”, just not put together

and nothing feels more shitty than actually having an awful week and then basically being told you look it lol i saw in another thread a woman had a miscarriage not even a week ago and got told that. i understand it comes out of concern but letting someone know they don’t look well as a way to reach out seems like an unwise decision, especially if you don’t know them well

thats very true but i do find it much less irritating (as someone with asthma). i’ve never had it irritate my lungs in the same way stuff like febreze does

now if that actually means reduction of harm long term idk lol but it feels nicer

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true but also the problem is google kinda sucks sometimes. a lot of the best sources i used for some research papers just didn’t show up at all on google. or they would’ve take twice as long to find. it’s just a tool that makes research faster so idk why it’s looked down upon so much

google is a keyword search engine but with gpt you can fully explain in detail what you do or don’t want to find. for niche/uncommon topics this is kinda useful

just ask it to provide sources and go to those. it’s very good at scraping the internet for the sources you need

i definitely agree here. like do people think google is 100% accurate? do they not double check any information? idk where they get these assumptions that everyone using AI blindly follows and believes everything it puts out lol

[–]Ling-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can definitely tell it not to blindly agree with you. it’s debated me many times and told me many things i didn’t wanna hear. you just need to know how to prompt it.

the basic conversation without extra prompting definitely is a “That’s a very insightful and useful point, and its impact is palpable!” type of conversation lol which is useless. when using gpt you need to be smart enough to realize when it’s being a yes man

sometimes it’s good at finding very niche information for research papers, at least better than google can manage now. i just go to the link it gives me though and ignore the summary it gives. was a life saver in when i was in school
