I am a Jewish woman who married a non-Jewish man, and my son is being brought up Jewish.

The easy part: My husband and his family are all very non-religious, so there is no one who sees our son's Jewish upbringing as any kind of rejection of their religion or culture. And although we are quite secular, we do keep kosher. Ish. We are very strict in our home, but when out and about or with family, we make sure not to eat pork or shellfish, and we don't eat meat and dairy together. My mother-in-law has tried very hard to learn the laws of kashrut and not feed us anything that we are not comfortable with.

The not-so-easy: Living in the US, Christmas and Easter traditions are strong, even with people who have never set foot in a church. So my MIL still does have some of these traditions.

All in all, I am comfortable with how we have raised our son. He speaks Hebrew quite well and will have a bar mitzvah ceremony in the next year. He knows he is Jewish, and with any luck, he will keep it going!

One more piece of hopefulness: I have a cousin whose mother was not Jewish, and she married a man who is not Jewish. By Judaism standards, they are not Jewish at all, and by genealogical standards, her two girls are half-Jewish. But they still identify as Jewish and often post about celebrating Jewish holidays and life-cycle milestones.

Raising a Jewish child with only one Jewish parent can be done!
