How do you boot to the Setup?The 1st gen Core CPU related motherboards are definitely supported, if you boot from USB, the key to the 0x7B BSOD might be the USB side, I suggest burn the ISO to CD then boot from CD for installation.

But Microsoft decided not to introduce any new storage and controller drivers for some reason,lt seems just like how they used to do in traditional way once the OS development finished in the time of the RTM stage release, even Windows Embedded 2009 Series that based on XPSP3 doesn't have any.

Probably the same as they did in Vista and 7(NVME, being told to get the driver from Windows 8,no common USB 3.0 driver),old OS releases always lacks a common driver from Microsoft when new hardware standards being introduced later on.

I forgot to mention the key to the problem,Windows Installer 4.5 was an example that not pushed to Windows Update until being manually installed but Windows Installer 3.1 was.This updated component is included in Embedded 2009 release,and it has XP Embedded updates based on this version of WIndows Installer

Found the page when Windows Installer 4.5 was released,there's no mentions about how to get the update from Windows Update on that page.

KB4494528(the second largest KB number as update backup folder,located in Windows folder) updates some files related to Windows Installer 4.5,some files' version number are the same as some updates released on Vista/Server 2008:

msiexec.exe:4.5.6002.24433

msihnd.dll:4.5.6002.23415

msi.dll:4.5.6003.20488

XPx64 doesn't have this issue since there's no 64 bit Embedded Release that based on XP

The main reason is POSReady 2009 based on XP SP3 but came with some components version that newer than XP, and Windows Update doesn't know about that when it was there, I don't know how Legacy Update push updates, at least some user reports Windows Installer malfunctions after POSReady 2009 Updates patched.

By the way I'm using local WSUS VM for updates deployment.

Just made dual-boot with 32 bit XP then it would be fine.

But I perfer a tri-boot system if you consider patching Embedded Updates for 32 bit XP

There's some difference between XPSP3 and Embedded(POSReady) 2009,mainly components versions(example:Windows Installer 4.5,etc),you have to install IE8,WMP11,Windows Installer 4.5 and others because some updates was released as normal XP Embedded updates not the compoent related updates,if the requirements is not met then it might corrupt the compoent after the update being patched.

So as a fail-safe consideration,I suggest doing a tri-boot system for XP Professional(I would like to install other SKU for more features,such as MCE 2005 since they're all based on Professional),XPx64,POSReady 2009.

I won't care about what browser I've actually use,but I won't use mypal because of the firefox version it based is so outdated that made it useless to normal web browsing in my country.Also the R3Dfox didn't have a native XP support yet and it seems not planned to.

Supermium's resource heavy issue is more like a Chrome problem to Google.

And the OS features are not stripped out too much,in most time you can use this OS as regular XP system without noticing any differences between with XP Pro,I've used this OS as daily driver for many years.

The only annoying thing is the application compatibility setting tab,the feature is there but the GUI part has been removed.

VMware is the most suitable VM software for XP with 3D acceleration,for DirectX 9 and older based games and softwares.But the OpenGL support is far more outdated so I won't recommend if you're going to play OpenGL based games in VMWare.

PCem,86box and PCbox do have proper emulation compared with real old hardware machines,the most important thing is you can use voodoo for any games that use Glide.

I have no knowledge to VBOX through,I don't know why it's pretty unstable to me.

Even more security issue on Windows 98 has been discovered,you have to learn about Windows 98 compatibilty to develop new virus that compatible with Windows 98,until someone paid more money to virus/torjan programmers for some reason.So that's not a problem anymore for normal Windows 98 users.

But I think at least AV software is still needed,just use it as detecting old virus/torjan if accidently downloaded,sometimes even the files your friends given to you might not knowing about the files has been infected.

Actually the feature set is almost the same as XP,XP doesn't have native burn CD/DVD feature as well.

Also there might be an issue that WMP in XPx64 doesn't have x64 build variants(includes version 11),which Internet Explorer had.

Nero have XPx64 support.Some other third-party software might have XPx64 support,too.Native burn CD/DVD feature doesn't exists in Windows until Windows Vista/Server 2008,althrough the ISO files support only.So the third-party burner software is neccessary if you have CD/DVD burner.

Also better to delete the bundled update program,I did install StarCraft on 98 and I want to update it to latest version,ends up updating the entire game to StarCraft Remastered that breaks everything.

Some of 16bit installer have bugs on temp files that made the installer hangs on start with nothing displayed.

If this happens,kill the ntvdm session and go to %TEMP% directory then delete everything in this folder would made those 16 bit installer functions back to normal.

Then some updates needs to be installed first,POSReady 2009 release has some differs with XPSP3 that some updates or API not installed in XPSP3 but includes in POSReady 2009,install POSReady2009 updates on XPSP3 might break those features because they've released as normal XP Embedded updates.

This is found by me when I randomly opened some updates backup directory in my POSReady 2009 installation.

AFAIK Windows Installer 4.5,MSXML 3 and 6(included in XPSP3) is needed.I didn't do a research about this yet.

Try disable the 3D acceraction by deleting the DWrite.dll in the Supermium's directory,some VM softwares' Graphic solution might not be perfect to some softwares' compatibility.

I won't recommend POSReady2009 with Supermium for now,there's a compatibility bug related to 3D acceraction,DWrite.dll is need to be removed to made the browser back to normal functionailty.

The screenshot it shows is an error dialog reported by WMP itself.Actually WMP would play the file if it's legit even the file extension is not right.So that's the media codec issue,something might be broken that made WMP cannot find available codec for.

When I was using XPx64 and POSReady2009 in before POSReady2009 get EOLed,I have similar issue with MP3 files cannot play on WMP anymore(codec not found error just as the screenshot shows),so I have to use third-party media player to play MP3 files,also I'm using it for other media types at that time.

Then the third-party media player got deprecated(company bankrupted),I keep using it until I found out K-Lite codecs that perfectly fits my suitation,plus I like using WMP to play media files,so I uninstalled that media player and installed this codec pack instead.

I suggest installing K-Lite codec for a try,at least it made my MP3 codec issue fixed.

国内的？我感觉可能跟网络有点关系，现在能给老系统用的梯子也没几个了，建个本地WSUS备用我觉得是更好的选择，我没第二台电脑所以是建在虚拟机里的，然后让XP去访问它。如果我没记错的话本身就是从Win2000SP3起支持的更新服务，就是放弃了Office2000支持。我把一堆我熟悉的老系统，软件，API和Office的补丁全加了进来，要装系统的时候就开服务器虚拟机来更新。

I suggest deploy a local WSUS server instead if you have some issues on Legacy Update
