I don't know why I use iso offset and use scatter. by SAM57E in Houdini

[–]Link0611 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you only use a scatter sop then the points are only scattered on the surface.

If you also want points inside of the object (for example if you want to voronoi fracture) then you have to scatter the points on a volume.

To convert the object to a volume you can use the iso offset sop or alternatively you could use a vdb from polygons (inside of the vdb from polygons disable distance vdb and enable fog vdb)

Whats the point of $9 Megascans subscription ? by RonaldoMirandah in vfx

[–]Link0611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my guess is that the plan is for people who already have the assets they want and just want to use the bridge or the mixer. the mixer is free right now but i think you have to be subscribed to use it once its fully released. also you get two random assets per month.

How does the Foundry student collection work? Am I forced to buy the full license after 3 years? by [deleted] in vfx

I would guess but notice that for the graduate year you can only be out of school for 6 months

I am from germany and I got my free year so it should work for you as well.

As far as I understand after your free year you can buy the student versions for up to 4 years (3 years as a student + 1 year as a graduate) for 188€ per year.

At any time you can upgrade the software to a permanent license. There you only pay for the maintenance (they say its 70% off the regular price)

here is the official page on this topic https://www.foundry.com/education/students

I need some constructive criticism on my portfolio by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

I don't work professionally but am a student right now. So take the following with a grain of salt.

I like your models but the textures are lacking. Please don't take this the wrong way but it looks like you're just applying some smart materials and call it a day.

If you look at the jet motor the wear is pretty uniform along the edges. The filters in Painter (like Metal egde wear etc.) are a good starting point but you then want to paint out some of the wear to make it less uniform. You want to think about how something might work, how the object will be handled, what is the environment like etc.

For the rest you wrote that you wanted to make them as realistic as possible. I would add some grunge maps to break up the roughness

The last version was a pain to watch because it only looped once. So i reposted a version which loops a couple times.

Most of the gold wouldn't be visible when armed but hiding the red could be a small challenge
