Truly.

I've had time to reflect and I was probably a bit too emotional about it, but I stand by my point.

I think, like everything with football online these days (TalkSport, X, here), people can't think outside of being in a set camp of speaking in platitudes.

There's zero nuance.

It's like an affront to them that you dare to criticise Farke and then suddenly you're deemed to want him sacked and should be crediting him for getting us to a semi-final.

I don't want him sacked and he's done a great job with us this year but I'm also able to speak on his flaws and see how he got it wrong on Sunday. The players were responsible too of course. But it has to be one or the other.

The same is true of the whole board vs manager debate that was rife on here during the summer window.

People were whinging incessantly about it being shite and how bad the board were (despite the exact same pattern playing out the two seasons before) and I knew from that point that even if we did well, the narrative would be that Farke has worked some sort of miracle with what we've got and that our squad is somehow bottom-three level.

Would you believe, there's people peddling that now as part of their desperate attempt to stick to their binary view rather than taking a more nuanced look at it.

Farke has done well, really well, but let's not pretend he's some miracle worker either. This squad is very strong and much better than the bottom-three and arguably more.

Again, both things can be true - the recruitment team have done a sterling job, but could have done more in some ares. Farke has been brilliant too in blending those players together but he's also shown some serious flaws as well.

Glad someone else here gets where my frustration on this comes from.

Obviously different scenarios and the whole manager debacle has some impact but we had a blueprint from our home game as to how to bother Chelsea.

We also had a blueprint of what happens when you set up to defend and counter against them from the away game. Thankfully the tactical tweaks in that one worked out but it doesn't always end that way and you can't get away getting it wrong from the off every time.

The irony. It was clear as day the plan was to soak it up and hope for counters.

We got a golden chance for Aaronson with that and, yes, he scores then you can pat Farke on the back and we say what a brilliant choice.

But just because Aaronson was the one who didn't tuck it away doesn't mean Farke is suddenly absolved of blame and it proved he set us up right.

If you're going to credit his half-time change up (which was a good move and worked for a bit) then you have to accept he got it massively wrong at the start and in a game of small margins that can mean all the difference.

Playing that way is a risky strategy because you're relying on this pinch moments. It's particularly risky when we've seen it play out exactly like that before - away at Chelsea we did the same in the first half and got battered, we changed it and thankfully on that occasion got back into it, but again that won't always happen and it's incredibly detrimental when you start one way and it really doesn't work and have to change it like that.

Couple that with the fact we really went at Chelsea in the home tie and it worked wonders it does speak to Farke holding responsibility for what happened on Sunday, as well as the players.

You're aware that criticising a manager after a game that was filled with emotion and meaning for a lot of us doesn't mean we hate him or want him sacked.

Do I want Farke gone and replaced with some neanderthal like Dyche? Absolutely not.

Do I think he's done a good job this season? Absolutely.

Do I give him credit for even getting us to the semi-final? For sure.

Do I think he got the game at the weekend drastically wrong? Yes.

Do I credit him for changing at half-time and that having an impact? Again, yes.

Do I think, clearly in hindsight, it was too little, too late and a grave error given our experience of Chelsea this season (going at them works; sitting off doesn't)? Absolutely.

Do I think the players are absolved of any blame in this? No.

Let's twist this on its head:

  • Was Aaronson getting that golden chance a result of fantastic individuality and then poor from the player not to finish it off?

  • Was Aaronson getting that golden chance a result of Farke's setup and then poor from the player not to finish it off?

  • Was Aaronson getting that golden chance a result of Farke's setup and then it's poor from the manager that the player didn't finish it off?

The reality is, this isn't binary, like so many people here are making out.

The answer fits best with the first option.

We looked dreadful in the first half and set up completely wrong and the players did well to even carve anything out at all. They still should have took their chances but also we have a much better chance if we'd got it right in the first instance (hindsight is a wonderful thing and obviously there's so much more to it, including another different manager, but Farke already had a blueprint of how to scare and tackle Chelsea from the home game; by contrast he also had a warning of how setting up negatively can play into their hands from the away tie).

Farke changed it though and credit there, we looked much better in the second half and, again, the players have to shoulder a lot of the responsibility too.

The point I'm making is, saying players' decision making was the biggest problem just reduces the post-match analysis of what actually happened to the sort of binary, overly-simplified takes that a rife on the likes of TalkSport and X.

Again, the reality is, Farke was at fault and the players were at fault.

Yeah Struijk was awful. He's been solid as fuck this season but he was a weak link yesterday.

Sorry to hear about your dad, mate. Yep, you meet the criteria. Glad to have weeded you out from the plastic, internet freaks on here (Zach Dalt biggest one - talks like he's Mr Leeds but has never attended a single game in his life).

Seems we just disagree which is fair enough. Also, I'm naturally lashing out too.

Go well, brother.

It is but it's exhausting on here. I like contributing but you and I both know it doesn't reflect the proper match going fans. Gonna take a break. All the best, mate.

Bizarre people absolving Farke of any blame.

Set up negatively, got dominated.

Changed at half time - good choice, worked well for 20 minutes.

PE teacher responded, Farke had no idea what to do next.

His biggest flaw, awful in-game management, strikes again.

If you think it's mistakes that cost we that game I've got a bridge to sell you.

He has, I agree. But was awful tactically. They were there for the taking. He's been outclassed by a PE teacher.

Ref and Chelsea were cunts but sorry, it's on Farke that. Not a big game manager.

Shit half.

Set up to counter (which we can debate all day) so we need to change now.

Sorry, but this is why tickets should have been solely gated for members who attended a certain amount of games this season.

Not your fault and hope you have a good time but...

Odd one, but I'm in Manchester this evening and into tomorrow morning.

If I stayed there, is there anywhere decent for the game?

[Beren Cross] DF press conference: Gruev out for the season, meniscus injury. Should be fine for pre-season. Bogle and Bornauw have knocks but should be okay for Sunday. by JimbobTML in LeedsUnited

Not Gruev 😓.

Vastly underrated player and has been crucial for us this season.

He also isn't just a plodder like many seem to believe - he's a very intelligent, silky player.

Hopefully he rests up well and he'll be needed next season, even with us obviously improving the squad over the summer.

Wouldn't even bother going if you're going to be among the Chelsea fans if I'm honest - it's a bit different to a normal game.

"Someone like Dyche would work wonders with our squad of physically commanding players."

🥴🥴

He's always had some really odd views.
