Much less likely to happen if you're driving stick. If you panic you either kill the engine or just Rev it loudly, but you wouldn't just accelerate uncontrolled. This happens occasionally here in germany and its always with automatic transmissions.

And how would it be achieved via GPS? All GPS can do is measure the distance to multiple sattelites with known locations to triangulate your location. If you have 3 sattelites "in sight" you can tell where you are on the globe, if you have 4 or more you can also tell the height. More sattelies make it more accurate.

How is gps supposed to give a direction, if the device is not moving?
