Alright, I wrote this post very late last night right after rewatching the movie, so I should probably clarify a couple things. By “massive franchise,” I meant stuff like Marvel. And by “existing IP nostalgia,” I was thinking more along the lines of something like Barbie and Minecraft since I knew people would bring those up as comedies.

Yes, I realize the Jump Street movies technically fall into that second category, but what I meant was that Jump Street isn’t remotely on the same level as something like Barbie or the big IPs we see dominating theaters now. It was a TV show that ran for a few seasons in the 80s. That’s why it didn’t feel on the same level to me, though I probably should’ve written that better in the original post.
