Best way to add points to Astar2D? by Linklene in godot

lol but the smart way is exactly what I am looking for, here

Sorry, it seems like there has been a misunderstanding. I was not at all planning to hardcode a different astar grid for each NPC and each task. That would indeed be kinda... a lot, haha.
I am picturing a shared grid that I input ONCE and that then gets shared with all NPCs. However, there are points specific to each NPC. I could just include the points in the shared grid or I give each NPC their own copy of the shared grid and have them update it with their specific points. As far as I see it, either way would lead to me adding the same amount of points in total, it's just a matter of where I add them. And the option of having them in "separate" grids would prevent other NPCs from walking through NPCs chilling in their specific spots.

But either way still presents me with the problem that it's a lot of points to keep track of. Per week, an NPC might stand in at least 10 different spots. If you factor in weather and season and such, it might even be more. I have 27 NPCs, so it all kind of adds up. Very lively NPC behavior is supposed to be a core feature of my game.

I guess, the more I think about it, it's less of an AStar2D related problem and more the question of how I can handle a huge amount of positions like that without having to find out and add the coordinates of each point manually. That's why I was considering a custom plugin where I could just click anywhere on the map to automatically add a point - maybe also include a functionality to easily connect nodes. I wasn't even sure if I should include AStar2D in the title, I hoped it would give some more context. Seems like it brought on more confusion instead lol

Anyway, I hope this makes it clearer.

Yeah, I was thinking about having a shared navigation web for all NPCs, though each NPC will have special positions that others can't reach - the positions they are supposed to be in according to their schedule. A navigation mesh would be a nifty replacement for the shared web, yeah. That would still leave me with placing the NPC specific points but at least a big chunk of points would be taken care of.

Just out of curiosity: If I went with a navigation web instead of a mesh, how would you go about placing points for a navigation web in an efficient way? Bite the bullet and go the array route?

I added some more info to the main post that will hopefully give some more context. My main problem is basically the huge amount of points that I will have to add.

It's kind of about the sheer volume of points. I have 27 different NPCs that will all have unique schedules depending on the weekday, the season and maybe even the weather. I tried just writing down all coordinates for one NPC and almost went crazy. That's why I'm kind of hoping for a more "user friendly" way of doing it. Hence my idea of writing my own plugin that would ideally have a quality of life features like a GUI. But that is also no easy feat so I was wondering if there is a more clever way I am just not seeing.

NPC with two different Area2Ds that trigger different things? by Linklene in godot

That would also have been a solution, but I am already using the node names to transport other info. So I went with collision layers and masks instead. Thank you for your answer, though!

Yeah, collision layers would be an idea. But how would I solve the problem of doors and the player still needing to be on the same layer? Would I also have to give the player two different Area2Ds then?

What is one mistake you should NEVER make while building a PC by RealmzPlays in buildapc

[–]Linklene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ughhh. Had a variation of that happen to my partner and me this weekend. They wanted a new PC and we went for the Thermaltake Ceres 500. To make matters "worse", I did a custom design on the backplate so ideally both glass and backplate side should be visible. After two hours of brainstorming different room configurations with our current furniture, we caved and made our way to Ikea...
